Been bingeing “Yellowstone“ and not only was I pleasantly surprised by the themes they touch on (well, within the genre) and how morally… gray it all is (to put it mildly, talk about the end justifying the means lol), but Beth Dutton is also like the female character. Holy shit. Kelly Reilly truly blows it out the park.
I know "60s housewives who invented slash fanfiction" has taken on a life of its own as a phrase, but Kirk/Spock didn't really exist until the 70s and THOSE WOMEN HAD JOBS. They were teachers and librarians and bookkeepers and scientists and they damn well spent their own money going to conventions, printing zines, buying fanart and making fandom happen. Put some respect on their names.
I haven't read the Prince Lestat books. How did Lestat make it clear wrt David?
I talked a bit about it in this post, but to elaborate even further, I’m referring to this exchange in Prince Lestat and the context surrounding it:
This dynamic between them is nothing new at this point. Lestat freely takes as does David. That within itself is quite interesting. A tit for tat sort of game with an underlying tinge of bitterness and hostility, yet also understanding on both their parts.
When you consider the fact this occurs after the events of Merrick in which Louis was left in David’s care and was harmed and almost died….there was an unspoken rift between Lestat and David that became clear throughout this entire chapter. We never know what happened after Lestat, Louis, David, and Merrick all decided to leave NOLA together. We know Lestat was the one to leave them first, but Lestat also makes it clear in this moment that he feels David is deserving of him taking the blood.
When you consider the fact David acknowledged in Merrick that he would have to “answer to Lestat” should something happen to Louis, well, this reads as one of the times in which David is essentially answering to Lestat over harm coming to Louis and starting that (hinted at) war with the Talamasca that only served to further endanger Louis.
There’s also the fact Lestat is trying to prove to David why he’s not fit to be a ruler with this behavior — the same way he later chops off Rhosh’s arm to “give them a little taste” of how ruthless he can be. I explored the dichotomy of that aspect to Lestat in this post.
someone I follow on the bird app just announced they're starting a very exclusive private fic server because they and a bunch of other people want to talk about how much they love the fics they're reading, and as an author can I just say that a really great place to talk about a fic you love is in the comments for that fic
I understand that people are trying to create safe spaces, but as the number of comments that I get on my fics dwindles with each passing year, knowing these spaces exist where my fics are being discussed, places that I am excluded from, makes me want to write fic LESS
I mean I guess who cares, right, because if I stop writing, there's 10,000 other people that will continue...but if you participate in a fic "book club" server and you say nice things there about a fic you loved, maybe copy and paste that into a comment on AO3?
the only thing fanfic writers are asking for in return for hours of hard work is attention. please don't rob us of the one thing that we hope for when we hit "post"
