‘way to live up to the rumors, kuronuma sadako!’ 

      ‘ it’s sawako.’

hands him a bento carefully made this morning

     NEVER DID HE EXPECT ANYTHING from sawako, but this was a pleasant surprise. his hands lifted from his sides and took the small box from her, his finger just lightly brushing against hers. she was always so thoughtful. he wondered if she’d done the same for ayane and chizu. the two girls were her best friends after all. he was almost sure even ryu would receive one of these from kuronuma. though how special would it be if it were only him? kazehaya didn’t dare think that he was singled out though. that would be too cocky. instead, he smiled at her and accepted the gift. 

                   “ thank you very much, kuronuma! i’m sure you worked very hard on this and i can’t wait until lunch time now! ”

she's been watching him for a few minutes now, while he was distracted with a book, not paying attention. or so it should be; when he looked back, and she caught herself doing something she shouldn't, eyes quickly widen and she panicks, turning looking away as soon as possible ' a-a-ah!! S-s-s-sorry! K-Kazehaya-kun, I-I didn't mean to -- - '

                HE CAN FEEL HER eyes on him. but he doesn’t dare look up from his book. not yet, anyway. he was too embarrassed to admit it but he liked when she stared at him. it made his heart skip a beat every time she looked at him. at least if he wasn’t looking back, he wouldn’t blush. he wondered how long he’d be able to resist it though. what if she was waiting to ask him something, and she thought he was ignoring her? kazehaya just couldn’t have that. 

       it was with that thought process that his eyes finally left the page; he’d been reading the same sentence over and over since he felt kuronuma’s eyes on him in the first place. his initial intention was to be smooth, to flash her a smile like he usually did. all he wanted was to make her smile as well. 

       it was the way her eyes widened and immediately left his that made his cheeks redden; his own head turning away from her to conceal the embarrassment. anybody else and he’d be able to bounce back from this momentary awkwardness. but with her, it was nearly impossible. 

          with his shoulders hunched and his back to kuronuma, kazehaya shook his head. 

             “ n-no, don’t-- don’t apologize! it’s fine, really! ”

touches her cheek wordlessly with a smile.

            Standing up, right there before HIM; it still felt so UNREAL.  Her heart accelerated every time they’d stand a few steps away from each other, and day after day, she had to remember, read in her diary or look at some photos she kept inside a little treasure box, of how much her whole life have changed.  Remember that, no matter what, they were there for each other; remember that he wasn’t just one other DREAM.

            Kuronuma, she heard so many times, this vivid voice of his, a sunny smile she eagerly would wait to see again every morning.  Once he stepped closer, both hands were brought to next her heart, in an attempt of calming it or keep it from EXPLODING – or so she felt like.  Waiting to hear from him, Kuronuma… but this time, nothing came out his mouth. Kazehaya said NOTHING.

            His eyes were straight fixed on hers, and honestly, the girl wouldn’t feel like looking away, as much as it’d be an instinct to most situations. Sawako WANTED to look at him, to look in his eyes as Kazehaya did with her.  For some reason she couldn’t really tell, this moment felt important; and absolutely no words were needed to any of them.  This connection, would it be because of the bridge they were able to build? This bridge, with which she could finally REACH him….

and then…

            Such a soft touch. It felt like he was being careful enough to, perhaps, not scare a little bird away. He was gentle…. Kazehaya-kun, he was always gentle and careful, right?

This felt unreal. Again and again, every day, Kazehaya managed to bring some new feelings to her. Widen eyes, a soft rose heating her whole face; fingers pressing against each other harder, near to her heart.  Oh, no, she was shaking! She was shaking so much! She didn’t want to give the wrong impression! Not now… Not when everything wanted was to show the exact opposite feeling. Of the whole HAPPINESS filling her heart. Yet, looking away wasn’t option.

Kazehaya-kun….

           Gently, slowly, trembling fingers before enlaced to each other now loosened, and searched for this warm touch to her cheek. Her own skin, cold, sweating.  But the moment Sawako was able to finally TOUCH his hand….. this was the moment she finally calmed down. And there, she was able to breath again, and smile to him

           No words were needed now…. just to treasure this single moment; keep this precious memory for the rest of her life.
