A windy and warm day at Jamaica Bay. Wendy and I went hunting for fish and found absolutely nothing on either side of the tides. It’s been a strange season, overly warm. The only fish we found were at Head of Bay around mid tide on the flood. There were a few birds working, but not a lot of active fish splashing, maybe one jump. But neither Wendy nor I got a single bite.

Birds working very close in at Tilden. Midday. About an hour before high tide. Wendy said she had heard there were also birds by the riding Academy. Surf anglers werepulling in keeper size striped bass — mostly on tins and resembling sand eels.

A beautiful day in Jamaica Bay. This October has been unseasonably warm, but today was a nice 50°. Started out the morning in the basin at the end of low tide. There was definitely some bait back there and seemed like there might’ve been beneficial to under them, but I couldn’t hook up with anything. Left the basement and went over to Canarsie Pol to have lunch and wait for the tide to turn.
A good decision. As I finished up lunch, I noticed that there were birds working closer to Mill Basin. Went straight over there and managed to pick up two schoolies between MB and the Riding Academy. This was about an hour and a half into the flood. Caught on 5 inch white, swim shads, on the troll.

October 12, 2024. Went fishing with Michael. Bummer of the day only caught one schoolie (white 5 inch swim Shad) at head of Bay at the very end of the day. No birds near the airport. we went to Paerdegat — a few fish splashing around, but no action.

Fishing with Wendy and Jared.
Caught several blues in the morning on the incoming tide near the railroad bridge. They were moving all over the place so really had to chase them. Then the engine on our Marina 59 boat died so we took an hour break at slack.
Afternoon and the outgoing tide brought tons of birds and schoolies in the marshes. Most fish were close to the grass and banks. Biggest schoolie was 22". I used 5" white swim shads. When I tried poppers or daiwas, the fish took a close look and bump, then rejected them.
Wendy and Jared used a variety of lures.

June 14-14, 2024. A good four days at the Beaverkill with Tom, Beth, Andy, Lisa, and Tim.
I caught 4 fish in two different morning sessions, all brown trout about 14" each. We caught all fish on Iso's. Tom caught fish in the evening on White Wulffs, but he said you had to keep dessicant on them to keep them riding high. I did not have luck with them at night.
ne person staying here at the Inn recommended yellow clinch klinkhammers (last image), which use a special hook so that the bottom of the fly stays underwater, while the head is at the top to mimic a fly trying to climb out of the film.
flys: 1. white wulff; 2. Iso; 3. can't remember but Dette Flies guy says it catches a lot of fish, apparently best for evening; 4. yellow clinch klinkhammer

Couple of hours evening fishing in the basin. I brought in one 21" fish. Wendy had several bites, but didn't land any. Very little action on the water. Stripers seemed to be very small, like 12", mine aside. Fished the incoming.
A lovely evening, nonetheless.

Grassy Bay. So close. And yet so far.
Birds working fish at the airport shore. But with a police boat in the water and airport scouts on the shore, Michael and I could only sit and look at them.

September 17, 2023 - Pandemonium in the Basin
Wendy and I set out into the basin on her birthday kayak fishing excursion. The day started out calm, then ...
We caught so many blues, we took the hooks off our poppers just to see the fish crash them. You'd have 4 fish at a time crashing topwater. Never, ever seen anything like this.
The blues were on peanut bunker. The sad part was there seemed to be some sort of die-off at the back of the basin, perhaps causing this.
Wendy landing one while it was still calm.
So much bunker they were dying from lack of oxygen?

Wendy and I rented a Marina 59 skiff, cruised around for fish, and ended up in Paerdegat. Where I caught a 33" striper! Biggest ever for me in JBay. Wendy got a substantial schoolie. Or two or three. Beautiful day. (That grimace on my face is from trying to hold up a heavy fish). Posting this in October, so don't remember on what tide, but from the photo looks fairly high.

Big Blues!
Sunday, September 25
Wendy, Michael, and I had a great day. Wendy and I caught a couple of big blues (approaching 30″) near the airport, then finished up our half day fishing catching lots of schoolie stripers in the pumpkin patch.
Temp: mid-70′s. Cloudy. Caught the blues on the last half hour of the rising tide alongside the Broad Channel railroad bridge. Birds were on them, and blues were busting out of the water. With slack, the bite died. Seeing no further action at the airport, we headed over to the Pumpkin Patch for the first half of the ebb.
Lots of birds and schoolie stripers around, and Wendy and I caught many fish. Me all on 4″ swim shads, Wendy on a variety of lures. Birds were on all fish, and we were in very skinny water: 4′ and less. Fish weren’t always busting, but on occasion were. Had to leave by mid-tide as the water became too low for the boat. Traveled back to the airport (noonish), but saw no fish back there.
We picked up the Marina 59 boat at 7:00, and booked for a half day ($100, not normally available on weekends).

Fall Fishing Start 2022
Went out early September (weekend of the 10th) for fishing in the Basin with Wendy and near the airport with Michael. Also a trip out to the basin on the 17th.
A bit slow in the Basin. I caught a couple of blues on the 9th, Wendy got one schoolie on the 10th, and I got one blue on the 17th. There were small peanuts jumping, but just not enough predators under them or enough who were willing to take a soft plastic. Wendy and I saw some larger fish jumping, but again it was very slow. We fished the incoming, and I fished both the incoming and outgoing. Late afternoon to early evening was the best time. Fish caught on skinny sluggos.
Michael and I took a Marina 59 boat out, and it was slow going most of the day. Until, on the outgoing, we landed in a pack of stripers, all jumping and taking every cast I put out. Prob brought in around 15 fish, all on 4″ swim shads. Michael, unfortunately, did not land any.
