Underneath the Underneath
Summary: There was this girl in his class who keeps getting higher scores than him. [five-shot] Featuring: mini!Sasuke and Sakura in their academy days! Did I mention Itachi? :)
“Congratulations, Sakura-chan!” Iruka cheerfully announces to the whole class. “You earned your sixth perfect score.” Sasuke watches as his teacher walks over to the desk right beside him, and hands his seatmate a test paper with a blaringly large red A on it, with a matching purple star.
The class breaks into a polite applause.
Sasuke frowns. He is second highest again, for more times than he could count. He only has one perfect score, but this girl. He looks to his left, wanting to peer at her test paper again. But she notices and quickly turns it over, hiding it from his disgruntled eyes.
So Sasuke stares down at his test score, demanding the number to change. 93, he thinks. You did well Sasuke, I’m proud of you! He could hear his mother say, just as she had said in his last exam, and the one before that, and the one before that…
He hears his teacher dismiss the class, but he couldn’t care less. Maybe if his nii-san helped him study, he would have a purple star too.
He looks to his right, and sees the frail girl sling a bag over her shoulder. Her bangs covered her forehead, so long that it touched her eyes, and her expression… The young Uchiha doesn’t know what to make of it, but it wasn’t the face of someone who just got their sixth perfect score.
He scowls.
“How do you do it?” Sasuke demanded, a little harshly, though he had not intended to.
He heard the girl give a small squeak, trembling slightly, her eyes widened.
“I–I’m…” she looks at her feet, refusing to meet his eyes.”I’m sorry!” Abruptly, she flees the suffocating room.
“H-Hey!” Sasuke blurts out in surprise, and he watches her retreating form. What’s up with her? He sighs in his seat. His gaze travels back to the upper right corner of the paper he still holds in his hand, his grip forming mild creases at the edges. The sight mocks him.
Sasuke lets out a snort, and shoves his pathetic test paper inside his bag. Many of his classmates are still in the room, chatting with one another. He hears someone call out his name. Too displeased at the unfortunate turn of events of today’s grading, he pretends not to notice and storms off.
Outside the academy, he spots a familiar figure leaning against a tree, arms crossed over his chest, exuding an air of silent power.
Sasuke brightens in an instant, momentarily forgetting the test paper tucked in his bag.
“Nii-san!” He runs up to his older brother, and tackles him into a hug. “I didn’t know you were picking me up today!”
Itachi catches him. “Hello, Sasuke.” He ruffles his younger brother’s hair, his lips tilting to an almost smile.
A flood of aspiring shinobi and kunoichi pour out the academy doors, greeting patient mothers, fathers, and siblings who have come to take them home. At the corner of the lot, near the road, a tiny girl with pink locks scattered across almost half of her face observes the scene before her, paying particular attention to the group of students laughing, immersed in an enthusiastic conversation underneath a tree. Then she takes a step home, disappearing from the academy, as invisible as a ghost.
Sasuke asks Itachi stories about his latest mission as they stroll towards the family compound. Things were going well until the older Uchiha touches on a forbidden topic, “How was school today?”
Sasuke freezes mid-step and grumbles, “I got 93 on my test.”
Itachi ponders on his brother’s reaction, lifting a curious brow. “That’s higher than your last one, is it not?”
“Not high enough!” The younger Uchiha looks away bitterly. They arrive at the gates of the Uchiha compound. A relative acknowledges them with a nod, to which Itachi responds. Sasuke disregards him completely, and continues plodding, earning questioning glances from their relatives. They all spare him a biting look, wordlessly reprimanding him for his brother’s rudeness.
“Sasuke,” Itachi calls out to gain his attention, following him. As much as he likes seeing his dear little brother pout, it would do him no good to remain impolite just because he was dissatisfied about something in his life. He can’t let his precious otouto grow up this way.
He offers, “You’re getting good scores. You even had a perfect test once, remember?”
“It doesn’t matter!” Sasuke spats at him. “There’s this girl in my class, and she has six!”
Oh? Itachi briefly reminisces his time in the academy. That’s impressive. Even he doesn’t remember getting so many perfect scores in such a short time. It had only been a couple of months since his younger brother started attending the academy after all.
“I wanna be the smartest!” Finally, his little brother looks at him. His large, pleading, doe eyes stops the prodigy in his tracks. “Won’t you help me study?”
Itachi stoops down to meet him. For a moment, Sasuke thought he succeeded, but two fingers press against his forehead in a flash. He winces, and the next thing he sees is his brother’s impassive face which aggravates him further.
“Come now, Sasuke. Everybody has their own things they’re very good at–”
He cuts him off. “Not you! You’re great at everything!”
“Getting a 93 doesn’t mean you’re bad at tests.”
“But I want to be the best at anything. Like you!” Itachi can’t help but chuckle at his brother’s hero-worship of him.
So he tells him, sincerely. “You have a natural talent, Sasuke.”
He’s beaming, and Itachi thinks he likes seeing his brother like this the most, even more than his sulky pouts. “You really think so?”
Itachi adds, “But this girl obviously has potential too.”
Sasuke huffs, and speeds up his pace, intending to leave his no-good, unhelpful brother behind.
Itachi catches up to him right in front of their house. Sasuke slides the door open, goes inside and shuts it in his face. Itachi almost laughs.
He comes in and finds his brother in the living room, sitting on the tatami mat by the table, a hand resting upon his cheek. Itachi takes a seat across him.
“You will encounter geniuses.” He states as a matter-of-factly. “You want to know your nii-san’s secret?”
Sasuke perks up, and eyes his older brother, anticipating his next words.
“I worked harder, and I beat them.” Itachi watches his brother blink once, twice, his back straight and his hand curled on the table. He lets his words to sink into the young boy before he continues,
“Effort will never betray you, Sasuke.”
His little brother’s eyes widens in the realization of an imparted wisdom.
Sasuke exclaims, loud enough to gain the attention of their mother who peers at them from the kitchen. “I won’t fail you, nii-san! I will work hard and beat her! You’ll see in my next exam!”
“Now what’s this, Itachi-kun?” Mikoto watches her youngest child enthusiastically prop books on their living room table.
“Nothing, ka-san.” her eldest chuckles. “Sasuke has found healthy competition.”

Note: So this will be my take on SasuSaku in their academy days. I have the next scenes written out but I decided to end it here.
This chapter is a setting up of the things to come. As you may have guessed, this story will be an exploration of SasuSaku dynamics before things took a dark turn for the Uchihas. We never got to see this on panel so yeah, I’m excited!
Quote note: “Effort will never betray you.” I read it somewhere in this site. So credit goes to whoever said it. :)

Kishimoto: „People say that Hinata should have been the Heroine“
In Honour of the MultiSakuMonth, I am going to rant about the statement above.
If anything ever annoyed me deeply, then that was Studio Pierrot trying to convince Kishimoto that Hinata should have been the Main Attraction since the beginnings. Right.Since the beginnings because N O W NARUTO is all about her. The Anime even ended with her Wedding (????). I will never ever get how People who supported NARUTO from the start are fine with the Wedding-Ending. If NARUTO ended with the Wedding of Naruto and Sakura, I would feel extremely embarrassed because I think a Wedding-Ending does not fit in here. It is the Ending of a Story about an Orphan Child who fought his Way from the Bottom to the Top. Ending his Story with a Marriage and making all the final Episodes solving around it like Naruto’s only Goal ever was to become married is dumb and ignorant. The Ceremony of him becoming Hokage didn’t touch me at all. Naruto was sleeping like a Baby on that day, even he wasn’t showing any excitement. So why should I feel some?
However, back to the Topic, to that Statement above.
Some may be shocked when they heard Kishimoto saying this, especially when you are a Sakura Fan, but not me, I was not surprised. Since the early beginnings of NARUTO, you could easily see Studio Pierrot’s Lovesickness for Hinata. After many Interviews you can be 100 % sure that there are some perverts working at Shonen Jump too. Kishimoto himself said that people who were working with him preferred Hinata. I am convinced that these people were the Studio Pierrot Staff and the some of the Main Editors. They were constantly screaming at Kishimoto’s head „Hinata! Hinata! Hinata is better! Make her the Heroine! “
No Lie, Kishimoto admitted it.
Obviously so often that Kishimoto had to defend himself „I SAY SHE IS NOT HINATA! “
Studio Pierrot was always trying to manipulate Kishimoto into thinking that Hinata is not just better but also something the Fans wanted. I know many people tend to hate Sakura in the USA and love Hinata….that is what at least everyone says. Maybe America wants Hinata but in Japan, it is not like that. That is proven by the amount of Sakura Merch, Events or Doujinshis of her. I would rather have the Japanese People on my side than the American NARUTO Fans. Truth spoken. If you look at Studio Pierrot’s achievements and actions, you have to admit that the staff’s commitment for that NARUTO Side-Character Hinata is somewhat disturbing. I have never heard of an Anime Studio that fights so persistently for a Side-Character. There were also rumours that the Editors gave only selected Fan-Post to Kishimoto. Same goes for the polls. Normally you can be sure that they are quite fair but handing over this task to the people who are dangerously obsessed with a Character should not be taken quite seriously. What bugs me the most is that they really created another Sakura in the Anime and got away with that. Her Appearance and Personality is not quite the Way Kishimoto writes her. I wonder why Kishimoto even has to draw and write when they do whatever they want in the end. Studio Pierrot started an Anti-Sakura-Campaign, fucked her appearance up and some of her Character Traits too, made countless Fillers about Hinata, gave her every possibly cute Outfit, added Extra Scenes and oversexualized her since she was Kid.
What I don’t get is:
Shonen Jump tells the other Mangakas to slow the Romance Part down but when it comes to NARUTO suddenly it is okay to turn this Action-loaded Shonen into a bad Shoujo Romance???? It is okay…as long as Hinata is happy. That’s their motto and proved that their behavior is really disturbing.
I do not get why there are even People who are defending the NARUTO Ending or support the End Couples. Even if you are not a Shipper, are you okay with changing the Origins of Naruto’s Story? If you are, then you just care about your OTP’s Relationship Status. I believe that the t r u e NARUTO Fans have to despise the Ending, why should they be okay with the Way their favourite Characters/Story’s Elements were handled. Just because the right ones in your Eyes are together? Is your Love for NARUTO so superficial? Obviously for quite a few it is. That is sad because those who were overlooking NARUTO‘s messages are the ones who got what they wanted in the end. They are fine with changing the original NARUTO Story for the sake of their ship. True Fans. Indeed.
Soooo I am going to comment the most popular Reasons why People think Hinata is better than Sakura.
🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
„Hinata is more beautiful than Sakura and she has big boobs! “
🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
Let us start with the superficial stuff: The Look, Appearance and Beauty.
There are people who prefer Hinata as a Heroine because they like her look. People are drawn to her appearance for whatever Reasons. Everyone’s taste is different. That is why Hinata is not my taste. Sakura is tho. In my eyes she looks stunning, has a unique Appearance (pink hair) and a nice Ninja Fashion Sense. I LOVE everything about her.Hinata is and stays just not my taste. I am not into her female Rock Lee Hair or her comfortable Ninja Clothes. I do not like her Colours, these dark blue and pale Colours are not my taste.
Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion but alone from the Appearance Sakura sticks out more and she looks much more special. I have already seen some Hinata-Lookalikes in other Manga too.
Now can you reduce a Hero/Heroine on her Beauty?
The Answer is NO.
A beautiful Appearance alone does not make you a Hero or suitable for this Position. Although many Main Characters stand out just because People want something special. Just look at Eren. I am not trying to insult him. I love shorthaired Guys. I think he is cool but WSJ said that he was boring and wanted Isayama to change him. Therefore, it is stupid when people say Hinata deserved the spotlight because she is beautiful or has big boobs. You really R E A L L Y cannot bring up the Body Type Argument here. Not in NARUTO. Studio Pierrot has been fucking up Sakura’s Body from the start and started all that flat-chested Jokes. Sakura is now a grown Woman with Curves, that is the Way Kishimoto draws her now, BUT Studio Pierrot made her all flat again and even changed her Hair? 🔥This gets me mad since I want my Character being drawn the Way she is supposed to look like. I guess she is too beautiful, that is why SP is trying to make her look ugly. Hinata gets a Makeover in every new Movie, Episode etc…it seems like they are never happy with her appearance or is there another reason why her facial features are changing so often?(Besides Kishimoto’s Sketches showed her a little bit chubby.)
🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
„Hinata is stronger. She comes from a strong clan. She is just more interesting. “
🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
Why do I have to comment this?
It has already been said in the Manga or different kind of Magazines.
Dear Sakura, I am sorry for writing this since you do not compare yourself with people who do not play in your league:
Sakura is of course stronger than Hinata. Just compare their Fights, their Battles, their Skills, the Consequences of their Attacks and their Stats. Hinata has the luck of belonging to a Strong clan and having a strong Bloodline but to be honest, she has never really progressed. Even her younger sister was shown being better in the beginning that’s why her Father gave up on her and said that she is a Loser. I was surprised when she was able to hold out a bit against Neji. I expected Neji to finish her fast but I guess Kishimoto needed time to explain the Byakugan during this Battle.
Let me summarize her situation again:
Hinata belongs to a strong Clan. She possesses a strong bloodline. The Members of the Clan are able to teach her dangerous attacks.
In the end, she ended up watching everyone’s back.
W h y?
Why wasn’t she showing more dedication when it comes to becoming a strong Ninja and represent her Family? I thought, she was watching Naruto all the time so how was she even able to fall back???? I DO NOT KNOW where her Motivation went or how Naruto used to be an Inspiration for that but she clearly failed taking that Chance. She inherited good and strong genes but still ended up losing all of her Fights. She stood up against Neji once because Naruto was screaming for her but what about before?Did she faint every time she saw Naruto? I do not see any Character Traits of Naruto in her. Even though she admired him, she was not striving to be like him. Because then she would not have ended as a total Loser (according to her father).
I think that is something People do not pay attention it. They find it cute and nice that Hinata was always behind Naruto’s back and that is maybe what made them like her but just watching someone gets you nowhere. They also say that NaruHina was good in the beginning and then it went downhill.
WHEN was there a good beginning? They had a nice Convo once in a while but the Way Hinata handled the situation and fell back is not a good Start since Naruto’s Influence is nowhere to be seen. If you just watch without learning anything from that Person, I cannot see any Cuteness in that, neither do I start to admire that Person. With that being said, she just stays a quiet admirer of Naruto to me who even doubts him in some fights. She was not standing completely convinced of his strength behind him. That is not a bad thing. If you don’t know a person so well, it’s only natural to doubt him/her. That was all in the beginning of Naruto and that truly did not caught my interest. People preach and talk all the time about getting stronger, striving to be on top etc…but if you only talk then good bye. Sakura was different. She saw Naruto and Sasuke working hard. She was aware that they are stronger and wanted to be like them. Her Strength even surprised Ino during the Chunin Exams. She started to change. Her Change lead to her becoming the strongest Kunoichi. Even though she was just an ordinary Girl. Her Parents are not Ninjas. They do not look “special” and strong at all. She did not have a strong Clan behind her back teaching her all these dangerous Techniques. She is the most ordinary and “unspecial” Person out of Konoha’s Rookies. HOWEVER, she still ended up being the Strongest Girl! That is an interesting Background for me. I like Characters who grew strong without everyone expecting them to be (Sakura’s parents are no Soldiers; she has a simple Life; no Wealth and Stuff; no special Bloodline etc…) Naruto and Sasuke had the Bloodline but no Parents. They had to rely on themselves. This is something, which seems to be more appealing than having the best Expectations of becoming a strong Ninja. So having a Character who got nothing but a split Personality and still ended up being the strongest Girl is EPIC!
🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
„Hinata is pure, gentle and a kind Girl. “
🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
AND? That makes her suitable for the Heroine’s Position or what?
Heroes and Heroines come in all Shapes. You have these typical goofy, cheerful, strong-willed Heroes and then there are Anti-Heroes. E V E R Y O N E in the Anime World can become a Hero even a stuck-up Bitch or a Megaplayboy. Nevertheless, Personality must be the key of becoming a Hero because your actions and what you make out of yourself are what defines a heroic Behaviour. They all have that determination, that strong will of never giving up in common. That is why they are always winning in the end and are equipped with Super-Human-Strength or power-ups or whatever. They sacrifice their life for others and are able to protect the ones they love. These certain character traits are considered heroic.
Does Hinata have these traits?
No. She stood up against Neji once. Plus Point for that and that was it. Naruto gave her the Will to fight when he was screaming for her (I thought Naruto’s Presence would motivate her a bit but Neji knows how to make her lose focus). If I was a Hinata-Fan, there is one thing, which would have made me dislike Kishimoto: The Tripping-over-a-Rock-Scene.
Why?
Because Hinata was always stressing out how much she likes Naruto. Therefore her reaction was truly d i s a p p o i n t i n g. Some might say “Come on! She is exhausted!” So was Sasuke and he was still trying to get up same goes for Sakura and Ino after their Fight in the first Part of Naruto. The Ninja Warriors all had their moments proving that even if they couldn’t get up they were still trying but Hinata was just laying there hoping that the Ghost of her dead Brother might save him ? ? ? ? ?
She clearly disappointed me in that scene and showed me that she does not have that never give up trait not even for the one she loves. I didn’t need much. Seeing her trying to raise her hand in order to get up or just looking into Naruto‘s direction while moving her body would have shown me that she was willing to get to him. But instead she closed her eyes and prayed that Angel Neji saved Naruto. She didn’t trust the ninjas who were around Naruto trying to revive him, she called for Neji.
Thank God, that did not happen to Sakura! I would be more annoyed than Sasuke of Sakura. When strong Heroes surround you all the time, I want them to act like them a bit. Hinata’s Fight against Pain was not heroic at all. Jumping in front of a dangerous Person who is out of your league is normally brave. However, Hinata’s interfering was not necessary because Pain needed Naruto alive. You all know that the Hero has to face certain Fights alone. He often says to his friends that they should stay back because he cannot protect them and fight intensively at the same moment. They might distract him. I think that the Fight between Naruto and Pain was a Fight like this. A Fight between only Pain and Naruto. Therefore, I do not criticize Sakura for not interfering in the battle. Hinata’s Interfering was not necessary and dumb since in the end she got herself almost killed. Moreover, she didn’t even help Naruto. If Pain really intended to kill Naruto then Hinata would have been useful. You needed a Character who would have helped him escape or dodge an attack but Hinata is not strong at all and definitely not playing in the boys’ league. She went on the field and Pain started attacking her, she was not a Help because she did not dodge an attack or helped Naruto getting him out of the Danger Zone. At least Sakura let herself hit by Gaara in order to save Sasuke. You see that is how you save someone! Kishimoto let Hinata appear, and then let her getting beat up after one second and Boom! Naruto went Kyuubi Mode. Maybe Kishimoto wanted a more dramatic atmosphere for Hinata’s Confession. The Way he handled her in this Scene really downgraded her Moment of Confession.
“Naruto! I protect You because I love you!”
Pain *attacks*
Hinata *almost dead*
When People say that they want to help and then get immediately beat up, it adds a funny tone to the Scene. The Situation is not funny at all. But for some People it is. Her Behaviour was not heroic at all, not for me. Same goes for Chapter 615. Hinata protected Naruto with her arms wide spread. She just stood there with her arms open. She was not covering Naruto’s body completely. She was not activating any Technique. She had time. (It was not a Last-Minute-Rescue-Action otherwise Neji would not have been able to throw himself in)She had Energy. She KNOWS how to fight! She belongs to one of the strongest Clans of Konoha?! AND NARUTO, HER LOVE WAS IN DANGER!!
So why was she not doing something? Attacking or pushing him away MAYBEEEEE???? This Scene stays a Mystery to me. Apparently, her Name and her Byakugan is an Accessoire.
There were some Last-Minute-Rescue-Scenes in NARUTO: Iruka protecting Naruto at the Start of the Series; Sakura protecting Sasuke from Gaara
They saw their Friend/Love in Danger and thought „OH God! I HAVE TO hurry I have to push him out of the Danger Zone! “
They had no time for activating some nice Ninja Magic especially not in the Beginning when some of them were not that strong as Kids. Hinata’s Situation was totally different. That Scene did not do anything good for her. I still do not know why the Hell Naruto would even think about going to the Dark Side. Helloooo??? That was the Final War and Naruto was in his best Shape ever??? Why did he even doubt himself at all? I think that only happened so that Hinata could slap him.
🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
„Hinata was always there For Naruto! She was the only one who was nice to him in the beginning! She deserves him.”
🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
She deserves him because she was watching him suffering and comforting him in her head. I cannot stand People who bring up this argument. They give me a headache. Hinata saw him suffering very badly but still did not find the Courage to comfort Naruto or to defend him or invite him over or do anything! She was watching people making Naruto suffer and cheering for him in her head. That is not cute nor romantic nor admirable. Hinata had the best expectations of becoming Naruto’s Childhood Friend if she actually did something. If I watch a Boy getting mistreated over years even though I like him and then one beautiful Day, I go to him and say:
“You know I like you even though everyone hates you and did all the terrible things but I never ever was a Part of them! I really like you!” If you were the Boy, would you say “Yes” to my confession? No. If the tables were turned, I would ask the Boy why he did not help me if he liked me that much. He still could have comfort me when I was alone. But he did not. Just like Hinata. She is not really better than the Bullies. She caused him Pain by not standing up for him. If Sakura had done that, then an angry crowd would be chasing her and cursing her name for being so apathetic. Naruto’s Suffering did not make Hinata stronger, she even falled back behind her Sister. Is that what you call the cute Beginning of the Love between Naruto and Hinata?
Well, you can have it. It is nothing to be proud of. Just like the recent digital Shinobi World.
I am not saying this because I hate Hinata. It is a Fact. If Sakura was always behind that tree, then I would have the urge to take her hand and push her to Naruto so that he knows that not everyone hates him. This was the perfect opportunity to bond with Naruto! If she had missed this chance, I would be mad as hell.
If you still deny the Facts, then read the Manga. If you can not read or understand what is drawn or written in there, because you have your Shipper Glasses on, then do not write about these kind of topics.
Now if I look at the people who stand behind Sakura (VA‘s, Kishimoto‘s Wife) and those who stand behind Hinata (unprofessional Animators releasing nsfw naruhina material) then I don’t need to add some extra words because this speaks for itself :) I am out.
