Moving Image Evaulation
23rd June 2021
The theme for this project was Moving Image and we were asked to recreate an advert of our choice and our final recreation of our chosen advert had to be a minumum of 60 seconds long.
We were given adverts such as the famous cadbury dairy milk gorilla advert as a starting point for our reaserch and inspiration
For this project i decided produce a 60 second advert for Nature Valley cereal bars, my inspiration for this came from watching a Nature Valley commercial that was from 2015 i wanted to keep my idea simple and i really like how this advert was shot and i thought that it would this would be achevable to recreate.
I decided to add my own take on the advert by including myself in the advert my final advert features myself on one of my regular bike journeys i stop halfway for a break and have a cereal bar.
What i enjoyed most about this project was the reaserch this gave me an oppertunity to go back and re visit some of the adverts that i remember watching as a child, some of the adverts i looked at were very nostalgic to me i looked at adverts from the early to mid 2000s for nostalgia which included the Irn Bru goth blackpool holiday advert, the very first confused.com advert and the Yop yogart drink advert.
I looked at more recent adverts as inspiration for the ideas i had for my final video.
I went along with several ideas which were eventually scrapped due to not being able to gain access to the right camera equipment required to shoot the final video.
I had an idea to recreate the Galaxy advert from the 2000s which would involve most of the shots being filmed in my bedroom.
One of my strengths for this project was the use of our chosen post production software which was premier pro i have used this software for video based projects in the past so the editing process was easy fro me to pick up.
My weakness was creating a storyboard for the final video some of my drawings were very simple and it could have included more detail as to what was happening in each of the shots.
If i was given another video based project to complete again i think i would choose i different theme in terms of the duration of my final video for this project at times i felt that 60 seconds was quite long for an advert most adverts you see on tv and online are usually cut down to something like 20 or 40 seconds long.
If i had another oppertunity to produce a video of this duration i would probably go about producing a short film.

Rail Systems
Using a rail system will allow the camera to move forwards and backwards on the rails with the use it will allow the DSLR to perform more like a movie camera.
Rail Systems can be purchased through amazon and can cost roughly £50 if its is purchased second hand, however a new rail system can cost up to £300

Tripod
A tripod is a type of camera stand with a fluid head to which the camera is mounted If the camera does need to move, tripods can also pan or whip pan left and right and tilt up and down for smooth controlled movements.

Pre Production - Composition
7th June 2021
Point of View
A point of view or POV shot can be used for the audience to get an experience of the character’s perspective, a point of view shot can cover a verity of different perspectives such as a person, alien, camera, spirit or a shark. A Point of view shot is also linked with point of view audio so that the audience can see and hear what the character sees and hears.
Wide Shot
A wide shot is when subjects are positioned far from the camera to visually represent their relationship to the environment. Wide shots often give information relating to the scale of the subject, it can also be used to make subjects to appear lost in their environment or create a sense of loneliness or overwhelm.
Wide Shots can also be used to give information on the subjects relation to the environment.
Close Up
Close up shots can be used to highlight a characters change in emotion or dramatic beat on screen. Close up shots are often arranged at eye level. A close up shot can reveal empathy and can illustrate how effective it can be during a time of decision or anxiety
Birds Eye View
A Bird’s Eye View shot refers to a shot which looks down directly on the subject. The perspective of this type of shot is very foreshortened, which results in the subject looking more short and squat.

Long Shot
A long Shot is the view of a scene from a considerable distance so that the subjects appear as indistinct shapes

Pre Production - Camera Movements
7th June 2021
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiyBo-qLDeM
Static
Static shots are captured by fixing the camera to the tripod in a fixed position resulting in no movement, this type of shot is often used for dialogue, composition and for displaying the actors performance in more detail.
Static shots are also used to show the helplessness of a character
Panning
A panning shot is when the camera rotates from left to right while remaining in a fixed position. A panning shot can be used to follow the characters actions or reveal information. A slow pan is used to build anticipation, a rapid can highten the energy of the shot, A whip pan can also be used to create relationships between characters.
Tilt
A tilt directs the camera upwards and downwards, a tilt shot is often used to capture the verticality of the setting or environment. It can also be used to give the character power, dominance or vulnerability. A tilt shot can also be used to reveal information such as a character, setting or scale.
Zoom
Zoom shots are used to change focal length of the cameras lens to zoom in or zoom out. Shots that zoom out can reveal the context around the character or subject. Zooming in can help us draw our attention to a specific detail. Slow zoom can be used to create un easiness. A Crash zoom can be used to create a dramatic effect for comedy, drama or both.
Dolly
A dolly zoom utilises both a dolly movement and lens zoom in order to create the vertigo effect. This type of shot is named after Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 film Vertigo.
There are two different ways in which a dolly zoom can be achieved the first is by dollying in while zooming out, this results in the background grow in size while maintaining the foreground. This can be used to portray conflict either internal or external.
The second way is to dolly out while zooming in, resulting in the foreground subject to become dominant over the background. This can also be used to highlight a growing relationship between two subjects. A dolly zoom can be used to convey either positive or negative psychological effects.
Tracking
A tracking shot physically moves the camera through a scene often following the subject and moving with it. When tracking shots are achieved purposefully they often make the viewers ask themselves two questions, Where is the subject or character going? and what will happen when they get there?
This type of shot is ideal for immersing the audience directly into the scene, it can also draw our attention to a specific action and create tension.

Unseen Research - Slow Motion
19th May 2021
Slow motion is an effect in filmmaking where the timing in the film is slowed down, this can be done through the use of high speed cameras and by playing the normal footage at a frame rate of 30 frames per second at a slower speed using post production software.Slow motion was created by Austrian priest August Musger in the early 1900s.
Slow Motion has a veriety of different uses in modern filmmaking which includes replay footage of sports and athletic activites in order to show the participants skill and performance.
Slow motion is used to re capture natral phenomena such as movement of wildlife and incects or water droplets hitting a glass surface or bouncing off plants.

What is High Speed Flash Photography?
High speed flash photography is the DSLR's ability to use an external flash at shutter speeds which are faster than the camera's sync. High speed flash is used to capture objects in motion, outdoor portraits. The duration for flash photography is typically 1/800th or less, a slower duration would be 1/500th, this allows the subject matter to be frozen more effectively.
Uses?
High speed flash photography is used by sports photographers to freeze the movement or the action of cyclsts, footballers, martial arts, runners, skateboarders, motorbikes and F1 cars.

Unseen Research - Creative Long Exposure
19th May 2021
What is Creative Long Exposure?
Long Exposure is also known as time exposure or slow shutter photography, it involves the use of a long duration shutter speed in order to photograph the stationary elements of images
Uses
Long Exposure has many uses. It can be used to get a smooth look to water or show how it moves. It can be used to get blurred clouds, to give a landscape a sense of time or the time passing
Noise Reduction
The long exposure noise reduction is a setting on the camera that takes two photos, one after the other, the camera then automatically subtracts the second image from the first. This reduces noise and any hot pixels in the initial shot.
Equipment
Neutral Density Filters
Shutter release cable
Manual and Bulb mode on DSLR

Unseen Reaserch - Timelapse
19th May 2021
What is Time Lapse photography?
Time lapse photography is a technique where a series of photographs are taken over a long period of time and are shown quickly in a series that a slow action of something such as the movement through a busy street happens very quickly.
The camera records photographs at a slow interval such as one frame every thirty seconds which would be at 1/30 fps. The shutter opens for a portion of that time.
Uses
Time lapse photography is commonly used to create the illusion of high speed movement of slow activity such as crowds, traffic, the sunrise and sunset, growing of plants and flowers that would not be as interesting to watch with just the human eye.
Time lapse can also be used to capture fast movement such as waterfalls and make them appear to move even faster.
Equipment
DSLR Camera
Tripod
Intervalometer
Neutral Density Filters
SD Cards.

Unseen Research - Cross Polarization
19th May 2021
What is Cross Polarization
Cross polarization is the technique that uses two polarizing filters, one on the light source and one on the camera lens to get rid of unwanted specular reflections. Transparent objects such as glass and hard plastic are commonly used for cross polarization. It is also used for dental purposes to show the stress of the plastic material.
In photography cross polarzation images can be taken using a selection of Plastic transparent objects placed in front of etheir a black or white background which is lit from behind, this can be a screen a monitor or an optical coherece tomography device, a polarization filter is then placed onto the lens.

Moving Image TV Adverts (Part 3)
18th May 2021
Confused.com, original advert (2002)
youtube
Another advert from my childhood is the very first advert for Confused.com, featuring scottish actor Alasdair Harvey. this was before the company introduced nectar points, brian the robot, the advertising format for confused back then was very simple and repetitive and includes a white background.
The shots in this advert includes, medium shots, extreme wide shots which shows large format text and a pull in shot at the end which features the original confused.com logo.
What i like about this advert is the simplicity of it in terms of the chosen background, veriety of shots.
There is no music in the advert the only sound featured in the advert is of the actor introducing the audience to the new financial comparison confused.com and explaining to the viewers what it is.
