Twomblyâs sculptural works, assembled from found objects, and manipulated to
achieve what Kate Nesin (author of Cy Twomblyâs Things, 2011) terms, to differentiate from other assemblage artists of the time, âsculpture properâ.
Nesin characterises Twomblyâs work as simultaneously situated in the traditions of sculpture, whilst also engaging with assemblage; presenting the found materials signifyingthe streets from which they came and their function within the world beyond the gallery.
Whilst Twomblyâs work is composed of detritus, combined with raw materials; i.e - plaster and paint, their work in my mind crosses over with ceramics - the use of plaster and the âfrozenâ state of drips an immediately obvious quality of the work. What i find appealing is the simplicity of the work alongside the human interaction with the materials themselves - that is to say the work âspeaksâ of its birthing. As well as this, the âhaphazardâ nature of the way the work is put together is also of interest.
