Seeing other people posting on IG (yes, I have seen Tedros on my tl) is like another reminder of how different JM and JK's situation is. On one side, they are usually more private and updating social media hasn't really been their thing lately, but on the other side, it's like another proof on top of many others of how they chose what is more difficult. They are stationed in a much more isolated place and in harsher conditions. And all that could have been easily avoided if they had chosen to enlist on their own. Separately. They too could have been in a band or closer to Seoul and have their weekends at home.

I know we'll most likely only get the occassional message of "we're doing well, everything is fine, we'll come back" and I have grown accustomed to that, as much as I would selfishly want more. But it's also impossible not to think that they voluntarily chose really harsh conditions for a year and half simply because they wanted to be together. Everything has to be worth it for that.

Jikook moment you might have missed in the BE Unboxing

At around 2:41, Jungkook brings up the photocards, saying that it’s cute how they’re all lying on their side in the photos ( “포토카드 다 업드려서 찍었네? 귀엽따~”) The staff member then starts talking about how the back of the photocards have the member’s handwriting on them, and as a result, some people might have missed the exchange that happens between Jungkook and Jimin at the same time.

Jimin, after taking a look at his own photocard, says “나 왜 이렇게 야하냐?” (Why am I so erotic/sexy [in this]). To this, Jungkook makes a sound with his mouth “씌익/씊” that’s often used with misbehaving children and playfully hits Jimin’s back while Jimin laughs and says “혼내지 말라고” (Don’t scold me).

I bring this up because the dynamic reminded me and a lot of other k-armys of a dialogue between a couple. Who else other than a lover would be this protective over someone being too sexy in a photo?? Even a family member wouldn’t react to this degree. And what’s up with Jimin’s bashful reaction to Jungkook’s scolding? Is this really an interaction that can happen between a hyung and a dongsaeng?

Also—remember when Jimin wrote in his 2020 Festa profile that his hobby was getting scolded by Jungkook?

The reason why this is blowing up on the K-KM side of things is because what JK says here, "가줘?", sounds so quintessentially boyfriend it's insane. On top of being informal speech, which, JK being the younger one in this relationship, is already a big deal, the phrase 가줘 implies a kind of fond indulgence that a similar phrase (something like 갈까, for example, which is another informal way to ask the same thing) doesn't convey. It implies that he's going there for him and specifically at his request, which may seem like a small difference, but the difference in tone/connotation in Korean is explicitly clear. It's a kind of dynamic that exists outside of a 'normal' hyung/dongsaeng relationship (which, considering that it's KM, is to be expected from them by now). That kind of indulgent tone is more commonly used between couples. But we see KM flout that boundary time and time again, proving how close their relationship is.

It's really amazing to see, and somehow still surprising every single time.

Side note: The way JM used formal speech with JK..... His unsubtle way of asking him to stop exercising and come over..... JK's informal speech..... How quickly he dropped everything to come to the room..... Just their entire dynamic..... Yeah......

I've tried to think of an English equivalent that would give off the same vibe, but I don't think there is any. The case with "근데 늦었구나" is really in the tone. You have to understand that there's so many different ways that JK could have said the same thing, but it's almost like he chose the softest(?), most indulgent(?) way to say it. Which is why k-kookminers were so excited and called it his 'boyfriend tone'.

"--구나~" (like in "그랬구나~") usually gives off an "Oh I see~" kind of feeling, like you're already speaking from a place of understanding. In the context that JK used, it functions a bit more like an affirmation:

"But it's too late to go running, [right?]"

There's a certainty to the expression that assumes familiarity with the subject and their situation—almost like you're speaking on their behalf and helping make excuses for them? And it's completely informal.

I don't know if I'm explaining this correctly (maybe it's one of those things that really do get lost in translation), but anyways, it wouldn't be the first time that JK used this kind of domestic tone with JM (see: bday vlive's "잠깐 가줘?" and gimbap vlive's "괜찮아~ 안죽어~"). This was just the most recent example out of many.

*Said in a cute manner **Wording is ambiguous enough for “You know” to be a potential translation instead, but I personally feel like it’s a little awkward. If that’s what JK meant, it would’ve made more sense for him to add 알지[?] instead of 아는데. ***JK uses word play here. The last character of their trademark “너는나 나는너”(“You’re me, I’m you”) is also the first character of 너무 미안해 “[I’m] really sorry” 

Personally, I feel like all the 미안해s make it more romantic? At least to me, the tweet reads as exactly the kind of cutesy, grovelling message someone would write to get back in their partner’s good graces, already anticipating their reaction when they wake up and see dorky pictures of them posted on the internet.

The tone throughout is simultaneously playful and sincere. After the first “happy birthday,” it’s written entirely in informal language. My favorite bit is when he says “You know how I feel, don’t you?” (side note.... its literal translation being: you know my heart, don’t you?) It reaffirms what we already knew, that Jimin and Jungkook’s relationship, whatever it may be, is close enough that it transcends the need for language. Even without words, they already know each other’s intentions (each other’s hearts, so to say).

That’s why I was puzzled at why so many Jikook fans were pressed/panicked this year when Jungkook didn’t post a tweet for Jimin’s birthday, as if that suddenly meant that they no longer meant anything to each other. Jungkook and Jimin don’t need grand, public declarations or dramatic shows of affection to convey their love for each other (although they’re generous enough to occasionally feed us with them). Their bond is secure and familiar enough to not need that.
