Richard swallows his mouthful of ale.  It hurts going down, and the air in his mouth turns to ash.  Since the funeral, he has tried so hard to dance about the elephant in the room that was Marlowe’s absence.  Half Will’s last two plays had been written staying up into the night in the arms and bed of a man whose lips now were blue, would rot away.  Of course Will would touch it eventually–writers, they cannot help but pour themselves into something.

He was a fool to think they could avoid talking about Marlowe.

“I do.”  He doesn’t make it about his ailing father, the theatre they might lose.  He does not mention the feverish urge he gets, each time he signs a painting, to make immortal somehow that name, why he saves every sign with his name on it, so that should he die tomorrow, snuffed out in a bar fight, people might have at least the wick of his old flame. 

“Men like him–like you, they don’t leave, when they go.  I couldn’t play Faustus tomorrow and not feel him in the room.” Aren’t writers so lucky? Immortal things, they’re resurrected by every man who can read.

Now he was determined to stay afloat, and not be beaten at drinking by a girl who could only weight fifty pounds soaking wet.  “You surprise me daily.  Christ.”  He lets the little glass hit the table with a little clap against the glass.  “If you can handle more than I can, fucking marry me.”  

This was surely not the healthiest of bonding activities, at least so far as his liver was concerned, but this was the most they’d spoken of their own words outside of filming, so he’d take it.

“A man could wander the globe on foot and never find someone so vehemently alive.”  It felt odd, even despite a shared affection for the same person that grew more plain each conversation, the remembrance her existence demanded.  Will had a life outside he globe, that something beyond words and kings the pain of living had ever filled his hours--god, let alone that there now existed people he had to be rather more quiet about certain incidents with.  As far as this good lady was to know, Richard III came before William the Conqueror after all.
