The Magtanggals are no different. They just use a different method to do so.

IN A NATZ SHELL
I have five published books to my credit (not counting the two published screenplays) that my publisher, Pen It Publications, has labeled my Fauxibility Series (Fauxibility is a word I coined to avoid the generic trap of simply being lumped with the nondescript genre fiction.)
Now comes the sixth, an aberration, as it is the sole non-fiction book in the brood. It’s like after siring five boys, finally a girl comes along. It’s a collection of my intrepid rants and musings in various guises that were posted not so long ago on my social media pages. I say intrepid because, with regard to some of them, I had expected a torrent of flak and vile trolling to come raining down on me. Instead, what I drew were mostly moderate to lukewarm reactions and none of the truculent criticisms I had anticipated. In hindsight, I thought how presumptuous and rather pompous of me to expect a fatwa a la Rushdie. As would be the trend in all my posts, either the people didn’t care a schmuck’s shilling about what I had to say about the world or simply ignored them.
I wasn’t sure I wanted to start a Blog Journal, especially after I had seen a glut of it in the infancy stages of Facebook and other social media sites. And perhaps much like the internet constituency that has become known as Netizens, I find it difficult to get invested in the outpouring of scathed and scarred emotions, regardless of how earnest they were; let alone, cantankerous grievances against just about anyone or anything. That’s why a Pity Party is always for a party of one. More importantly, indulging these posts with my attention would only appropriate unnecessary time from my story projects. How in blogosphere’s name I got dragged into it happened one September Sunday afternoon in 2010 when Pete Best rode into town and performed here.
Now, unless you’re a Millennial or Generation Zoomer who couldn’t care less about his/her grandparents’ music; or someone who had imbibed Emerson and renounced the appurtenances of life, living and culture over the last sixty years, then Pete Best should be spared of another introduction. I refuse to even give a refresher course about the man since I already wrote much about him and that afternoon in my first Blog piece.
My wife and I were walking off the gluttonous repercussions of another Sunday monster gut-busting lunch when we chanced upon crowds flocking to the stage area in the middle of the Atrium on the ground level. Technicians were setting up amps for band instruments, and paying particular attention to the drums set-up that looked like a throwback to the Combo era (again if you’re below 30 years old, just ask your grand folks about it). Around the ledge railing on the third level where we were at, some of the Sunday crowd had come to congregate there as well. I thought this must be a popular band performing and wondered who it was. Since wifey and I had no other agendum that afternoon and in no rush to get anywhere else, we thought we’d stay to see the show. From our viewpoint, we got a glimpse of the backstage area and caught the local performers in a huddle. One of them was the late Rene Garcia of Hotdog, which led me to assume the show was going to be a Hotdog revue of sorts. My thoughts were soon rectified when I spotted another boy in the band, the only Caucasian with a bushy pornstache and geezer in the group, seated quietly against the backdrop, his face punch-drunk red and glistening with sweat. I didn’t recognize him immediately but realized who he was when I finally spotted the almost oblivious banner above the stage.
What struck me about Pete Best was how stoic and dissociated he was from everything. Despite the bells, whistles, and fanfare drummed up by Rene Garcia about who he was to goad the crowd to cheer, that hardly boosted his spirits at all when he finally assumed his place behind the drum kit. His face wore the radiant pain of a jilted lover ousted by his erstwhile band of several lifetimes ago that went on to become a multi-billion-dollar global brand after his exit. Egregiously absent from him was the expected rock-star swagger, that if anything should falsify rumors of his career’s demise after his ouster from the original Fab Four. As the band rocked and the songs rolled out, it was as if he was there merely to keep the beat for Rene and company and shunned the spotlight of being the featured performer.
Ironically, the group went on to play the very music one would have expected him to throw a hissy fit at the mere suggestion of it. Unbeknownst to the crowd, he was there that afternoon to promote his solo album, a collection of his own music, which Rene, not him, took it upon himself to announce and made pleas for everyone to buy it. Unfortunately, what might seem mandatory to promote the album was for him to ride the coattails of the band that ejected him by churning out the tunes they made famous, as if history itself hasn’t added much insult to his injury. Like it or not, his brief and rather inauspicious stint with the group would remain his ignominious claim to fame.
As if padding up that pain of yesterday, none of the songs from his album he was supposed to push was played at all. There was not even a grunt of protest or a desperate plea from him to check out his music, if only to rewrite his place in history as a bona fide talented musician and songwriter. When it was over, he went down the stage as quietly as he rode it, notwithstanding the perfunctory goodbye wave, and squirreled his way to the back stage. I didn’t stay anymore to bother if anyone even engaged him in a greet-and-meet, let alone expressed interest in buying his CD. It was just too excruciating to watch.
After having witnessed all that, some impish voice in me told me to write about it. The following day, ignoring the what’s and why’s, I succumbed to that voice’s hectoring and put my thoughts to paper. The posted piece elicited mixed reactions ranging from the sympathetic to apathetic.  Regardless, it found a small audience.
That wouldn’t be the last time that impish voice would goad me to expose my ruinous heart and let my freak flag fly. Following that post, whatever struck my disdain; whatever captured my fancy; whatever felt right or wrong at the moment, or even in the past, I put it out there for everyone to either ingest or ignore. The moderate reactions that my Pete Best piece drew also dwindled with each post. That hardly deterred me from posting more as long as that impish voice persisted. Whatever got me off for doing so, a plan to come up with a book containing these posts was far from it.
Fast forward to 2020, weeks before COVID 19 put the world on pause. I emailed a sample blog to my publisher, Debi Stanton, to sniff out her thoughts on whether it would make any business sense in publishing a book composed of my blogs. After reading the piece, her encouraging reply was yes it’s plausible. So I sent her another piece, hoping her enthusiasm didn’t just come from a place of drunken stupor or temporary insanity. Her next reply was “When can you deliver the book?”
A year and half after that conversation; after collating and polishing those pieces and even adding new ones; after surviving the loss of my laptop and being blessed mercifully with a new one in the midst of the pandemic, thanks in no small part to my high school batch, BLAH-BLAH-BLOGHS has made its inclusion to my list of published works. While it is far from a summary of whoever it is that I am as a person, let alone that of being a word slinger, it does represent some critical periods of my life and thinking.
Is it my best book yet? Hard to say. I consider each of my babies as emblematic of a particular juncture in my creative journey, with each one getting a fair amount of love and devotion to its fruition. I must say though that after having read those pieces again while I was preparing my latest baby, something was stirred inside me, possibly steering me to a new direction or what my impish voice would call “the time to write that Great Novel” that might finally land me a literary agent, possibly a nod from major publishers, and who knows maybe even the Pulitzer. Ha-ha-ha. My impish tormentor hardly finds it a laughing matter.
Truth is, I am actually terrified about the next chapter where that bullying bellow might lead me next.
