Bakura snorted at the confidence Kek was displaying. They were going to enjoy punching him down.
“So, we agree to no magic?” Bakura asked.
“Yes.” Kek nodded. “I'm turning the shadows off. So no Ka for you.”
“I'm good with that.”
“... and no knives either. Ryou said no.” Kek added, looking a bit disappointed.
That made Bakura laugh. “Yeah. I guessed that. But that's better if you want a chance to win.”
“So you say,” Kek snorted. “Alright. Five minutes. Let's start.”
Bakura grinned, keeping their hands in their hoodie's pockets. “Come at me, pretty boy.”
Kek frowned. Bakura was showing no intention of attacking first. Not to mention they had their guard wide open as an invitation. Kek knew better than to underestimate the thief, but he felt offended that Bakura wasn't taking him seriously. He would show the thief, then.
Kek ran to Bakura, going for a first punch that the thief easily avoided by stepping back. Kek tried then with the other hand, but Bakura got down. Same thing with the following kick, they did a light jump. The thief staying on the defence was pissing off Kek.
“Stop running away!” Kek growled, which made Bakura laugh.
“I'm flattered by how much you want me, but be a little more patient.”
Kek had enough. He made Bakura step back to the table, thinking that blocking their escape route would finally made them fight back. But Bakura jumped and landed on the table. They had raided countless of tombs, navigating in a small space was certainly not an issue for them. It surprised Kek for a second. And the next moment, he got kicked in the face. Bakura hadn’t let him the time to react. The moment they got on the table, they had jumped on Kek to hit him.
Kek wasn’t able to block it, the impact made him fall, but he quickly got his balance back to get on his knees. He raised his head, his cheek was bruised and he had his lips cut (he bit himself).
“So, are you happy?” Bakura smirked.
“You're fucking dead.” Kek grinned, swiping the blood from his lips.
The blond got back on his feet and attacked again. This time, Bakura wasn't on the defensive anymore, they directly confronted Kek.
The thief got a few hits, they had to say that Kek was good. It was obvious how the blond had real training in fighting. (Or more exactly, Marik had and Kek used it.) However, Kek was lacking experience in a true fight. Before he never got to have an opponent who could defend themselves, it was showing in the way he moved, and relied massively on the rod. Then, now, whenever something happened he used his powers.
On another hand, Bakura had fought for their life since they were a kid.
They got Kek on the ground, smashing his head against the floor. Would it have been someone else, someone with a human body, they would have passed out from the impact.
“Alright, that's enough!” Ryou said, clapping his hands to get their attention. “The time is over.”
Bakura looked up. Already? Damn, time surely passed quickly when you were having fun. They released the blond, allowing him to stand up.
“Are you satisfied?” Bakura chuckled.
“Fuck you.” Kek growled as he swipped the blood from his nose. “Next time I-”
He rested his other hand on the table's corner to support himself, needing a second because his head was spinning a little after that hit. However Kek didn't pay attention and put his hand on a part of the diorama. It immediately crashed on the floor.
There was a silence in the room as all eyes went to Ryou. Bakura immediately raised their hands.
“Not me.”
(continued from here)
Kat wasn’t pleased with the terms, but she wasn’t going to argue them either. It was something they both needed to get out of their systems.
She followed Bakura into the other room.
“So, um…are they doing this inside the game, or right here and now?” Kat questioned.
“Here and now,” Kek said with a grin, obviously pleased that Bakura had agreed.
Kat glanced at the amount of space. While it was true that Ryou's apartment was larger than Bakura's, that didn't mean there was much space to brawl.
“Um, are you sure that’s a good idea?” she asked, still glancing around and noting the number of things that would probably get broken.
“It will be okay,” Ryou stated with his usual smile that sent a few chills down Kat’s spine.
It wasn’t hard to guess that Ryou had noticed her concern.

“Of ‘play time’?” Bakura snorted, having put an arm around Kat.
Sure, it was what Kat and Kek called their little outings together, but it made Bakura roll their eyes to have it used on them. A fight was a fight.
“If he wants to be punched in the face so badly, sure. Why not.”
Maybe it wasn't such a bad idea. It would get some steam out of both of them. Besides, fists only was good. While fighting with Diabound was quite effective, it wasn't as satisfying as using their muscles and feeling the impact of the hit.
Bakura released Kat and walked out of the room.
(continued from here)
Kat sat the figure down and closed the space between them, coming up to Bakura and wrapping her arms around their midsection from off to the side and leaning her head against their arm.
“I know,” she sighed. “Neither of us had the best day. That’s why I thought this would be a fun idea. I didn’t think it would be such an issue.”
There was a light knock on the door followed by Ryou peeking his head inside the room.
“Kek agreed to the Shadow RPG on one condition: He and Bakura get exactly five minutes of ‘play time’, fists only.”

Bakura silently listened to Kat. They understood where she was coming… but they were still too pissed off to agree.
“Yeah, yeah,” they grumbled. “And I am a selfish asshole, I know.”
Bakura made their tongue click, still looking at the figurines.
“This is stupid. If I can be still called human after everything, then so can he. It doesn't matter what his body is made of.”
Then Bakura sighed and ran a hand across their face.
“Sorry. I’m not trying to fight with you. The whole day had been shitty.”
The thief accepted to come for Kat, but maybe they should have left her go alone… Obviously they were too much in a sour mood to be any pleasant company.
(continued from here)
Kat turned and leaned against the desk in the room in a bit of exasperation.
“It’s not that I’m trying to go easy on him, but I understand why he’s not okay about all of this at the moment. He worked so hard to become a better person, and now it’s all being thrown back in his face.”
She looked off and smirked a little.
“Personally, I think he should go back and tell that guy to shove it.”
She then turned her gaze back to Bakura, her smirk softening into a small smile.
“But we can’t be the ones to tell him that. All we can do is offer a helping hand when he gets knocked down. He has to be the one to dust himself off afterwards and decide to hit back.”
She pushed off from her leaning position and chose from her characters that were kept here, staring down at the figure now in her hand.
“The first thing he needs, though, is to not be afraid of himself. Beings like us have to be careful interacting with the human world, which in a way kind of already instills a fear of messing up and revealing ourselves. When that changes and makes us fear ourselves on the same level that most humans would, it can have devastating effects.”
She looked back over at Bakura.
“I understand that you’re pissed off about all of this, as I am too, but unlike you, I am cursed with empathy.”

Bakura and Kek glared at each other for a couple of seconds, then Kek released the thief. Ryou immediately went next to his boyfriend and put a hand on his shoulder to calm him down (or to comfort him). Bakura rolled their eyes and followed Kat in the craftroom.
“You and Ryou need to stop sugarcoating things for Kek. He can take a few punches. And I mean metaphorical ones.” Bakura growled as they went to look at a shelf of figures.
They had really tried to forget their bad interview and focus on Kat, but with Kek complaining nonsense, all the anger Bakura accumulated today was now focused on the blond. They felt annoyed at Kek right now, and even more since everyone was apparently trying to refrain from telling him he was an idiot. No one spared Bakura when they needed to be called out, they didn’t see why they couldn't do the same with the blond.
Somehow Bakura found themselves wishing Marik was already back in the country. The guy would be totally on board for a round of bitching about everyone while drinking.
(continued from here)
At first Kat couldn’t figure out why Bakura was acting the way they were (and found herself wondering if Bakura was referring to her or Ryou in regards to the other person with a torture kink). She sighed when she realized Bakura was intentionally provoking Kek, and suddenly felt a bit bad for trying to pressure him into creating a Shadow Game.
“Kura, let's go grab our characters from the other room and give these two a few minutes to discuss things.”
Yes, she wanted to get her frustrations out on a physical level, but she had also thought everyone else would be on board with the idea.

Honestly, Bakura felt a liiiiittle pissed off hearing Kek complain. Yeah, they got it and Kek had reasons to be anxious. But it still pissed off Bakura.
“What are you complaining about?” Bakura said, rolling their eyes as they grabbed a chair to sit. They leaned into their chair, almost laying down, with their arms crossed against their chest. “You got the job because of who you are, not because of some bullshit fake resume.”
Kek immediately glared at them.
“I don’t want to be that same person!”
“And what kind of person is that? One who fights to survive?”
“You know it’s not-”
“Oh, you mean the psycho that goes off by torturing people?” Bakura shrugged. “Big deal. You’re not the only one with a torture kink in the room. … And I am not talking about me by the way.”
Ryou didn’t have the time to ask Bakura to stop that Kek had grabbed the thief by the collar, forcing them to stand up.
“What is your damn problem?!”
“I need to punch something. So it’s either in game, or your face. Your choice.” Bakura said, looking almost bored, with their hands in their pockets.
(continued from here)
“Ryou, do you have any objections to running a Shadow RPG?” Kat asked before Kek could have a chance to speak.
“Well I-” Ryou began.
“Tell her no,” Kek interrupted.
“You're supposed to let Ryou decide,” Kat said irritably as she turned to face Kek.
“I-”
“The Shadows are dangerous. I don't want something bad happening,” Kek argued, once again interrupting Ryou before he could get more than a word out.
“You're worried about something bad happening now? You barely worried when Ryou helped in breaking my bindings,” Kat stated, placing one hand on her hip. “Okay, what happened?”
Kek opened his mouth, then shut it and looked away.
“...I got the job,” he said quietly.
Kat furrowed her brow in confusion, blinking a few times.
“Wow. Way to sound enthused about good news.”
Kek grumbled and sat down, looking defeated as he placed a hand across his eyes.
“I didn’t get it for the reasons I was supposed to.”
He lowered his hand and let out a huge sigh, his gaze focused on the floor.
“Somehow the interview guy figured out it was me in the tournament and decided he wanted me for the intimidation factor.”
Another sigh.
“I was excited at first because ‘Hey, I got the job!’, which meant I could finally be something more than a financial drain and help out. It wasn’t until the thief texted saying you two were coming over for a campaign that I remembered what happened that one time, and it got me thinking and worrying what might happen if someone does something to make me that upset at work.”
Kat relaxed.
“I see. But you know what? Making it happen on purpose is an excellent way to learn how to keep it from happening by accident. It also helps you learn how to reign it in and maintain a level of control over it.”
Kek looked up, appearing to be thinking about what she’d said, though still displaying obvious uncertainty towards himself.

“With the ring it was easy, I just had to tap into the magic stock inside. Shadow magic isn't heka. It doesn't come from the living, it is not natural.” Bakura was explaining to Ryou as they were setting everything down. “So you have to summon it.”
“I see. So it is not like a spell. But for the summon, you mean from the shadow realm?”
“That would be it. More like you summon a part of the realm itself and as the summoner you get to set the rules. But as I said, I only did it with the ring. Not sure if I could do the summon on my own. I am not a mage.”
The two Bakura raised their heads as Kat and Kek came to the room.
“But for tonight, just a normal game is good.” Bakura said as they saw that Kek was making a face.
(continued from here)
Kat expected Kek to be completely on board, but instead he stood there looking a bit uncomfortable and embarrassed.
“It was an accident last time. I haven't exactly practiced how to make it happen on purpose,” Kek explained.
“But…you created shadow games during the tournament on purpose, so how would this be any different?”
Kek winced at being reminded of his actions from back then.
“Kitty, I'm not the same person as I was back then. Summoning the shadows as an extension of myself is one thing. Summoning them for others to command is another.”
Kat thought for a moment.
“I'm sure Kura could teach you. They obviously know a thing or two seeing as they knew how to wrest control the last time.”
Kek nervously rubbed the back of his neck.
“Let's go talk to Ryou about it first. He might not want to run a shadow campaign.”
Kat nodded and the two made their way out of the room to join the others.

While Bakura let Kat go to Kek, the thief followed Ryou to the kitchen and helped him prepare the snacks.
“Kat is hoping for a shadow rpg,” Bakura said. “Not sure if you'd rather be a participant or do the game master.”
“I am curious about the mechanics of a shadow game,” Ryou said. “I would be interested of doing the GM. Besides, you look like you need to punch at things more than me.”
Bakura sighed. “Yeah. Maybe. But honestly I am a bit worried about you managing a shadow rpg…”
“Why? Do you think I won't be able to control it?”
“No, on the contrary. Of you going a bit crazy about it and making the hardest game you can think of. … You need to set up the penalty as not dying for real by the way.”
Ryou laughed. “I'll be sure to keep that in mind. But anyway, I don't know if Kek can do it again. Last time was an accident.”
“Well… I am sure I can teach you how.”
Ryou looked curious. “I thought you couldn't use magic without the ring.”
“Technically I never tried, so I don't know. But I was more talking about you doing it. I still remember the process.” Bakura said with a shrug.
While Bakura didn't really like Ryou playing with magic, they thought it would be useful to give some basics to the boy so at least he knew what he was playing with rather than experimenting on his own.
Ryou was practically vibrating with excitement right now. It made Bakura smile and forget their bad mood. Then, they brought the food to the table where Ryou had set up a game.
(continued from here)
Kat could sense a bit of discomfort from Bakura, and was a little surprised when they changed their mind about a game night. She was pretty certain the change had been for her benefit, because now that she thought about it she realized that with Bakura potentially not getting the job the last person her wife probably wanted to see was Kek. Especially if he got the job.
The two of them made their way to grab the usual over-abundance of snacks for a long game night, then made their way to Ryou's place. There were the usual greetings at the door, and while Ryou helped Bakura with the bags of food, Kat ran off to ambush Kek.
Kek was in the other room gathering a few last minute things when Kat approached for her sneak-attack hug attempt. Just as she got close enough she found herself lifted upside down and dangling by one foot with a shadow tendril around her ankle.
“Awww,” Kat pouted. “I was so close…”
“Kitty, you were nowhere near ‘close’,” Kek chuckled.
Kat just folded her arms and looked away. Kek shook his head in amusement as he placed her back upright. Kat looked up and gave him a devious smirk.
“So, think you can put those Shadow abilities of yours to good use to make out campaign a bit more ‘hands on’?”

Honestly Bakura wasn't in the mood to see people right now. Especially since seing Ryou meant seeing Kek, and then it meant talking about the job interview. Then it means probably getting mad again, and maybe making Kek feel bad.
But Kat looked like she was needing people around. And honestly, her well being bow was more important than Bakura’s shitty interview. Besides, maybe a game would be good to think about something else.
“No, let's do a game night. Though I can't promise a thing on the ‘shadow’ part.” Bakura snorted before getting their phone out and typing a message to Ryou.
“Game night? I'm bringing the food and you prepare the set up. Can do GM, as you want.”
The answer came with a “👍” before Bakura could even put his phone down.
“Game night it is,” they said to Kat. “Let's grab something to eat before going.”
(continued from here)
“Awww,” Kat pouted. “I was hoping for Shadow Game Monster World so we could stab things.”
She then gave a casual shrug.
“If you would rather have an evening with just the two of us, however, I’m good with that too,” she said with a smile while looking up at Bakura. “Less people to share snacks with that way.”

Bakura wasn't going to complain about Kat getting a few days off since it looked like they weren't going to get a job soon.
Anyway, right now they only wanted to get home with their wife. Bakura mumbled a “thanks for calling Ryou” to Yugi as they passed the door and exited the building without letting go of Kat's hand.
“Let's buy junk food for tonight and eat while watching a stupid horror movie.” Bakura offered.
(continued from here)
Kat looked at Bakura, feeling a bit surprised at the suggestion that she could do campaigns without them.
Sure, she’d gotten used to going out and doing things without Bakura, as well as hanging out with Kek and Ryou when Bakura wasn’t around, but this felt different.
She looked back at Yugi with a small smile.
“It doesn’t feel right for me to participate in a campaign without Kura. Sorry.”
“It’s okay, I understand,” Yugi said, seeming a little disappointed, but wearing a smile regardless. “You’ve been working hard with everything else you’ve got going on and I’m sure you could use a bit of a break. You should take the next few days off for yourself. Hopefully you can enjoy it without any more unannounced visits.”
Kat smiled a bit more and nodded. “Thanks. I’ll do that.”

Bakura looked at Yugi, frowning. Of course, this game crazy addict would jump on the first occasion to play a game. Bakura on their part, had absolutely zero intention of getting close to Yugi. Technically they had nothing against the kid (who was very much not a kid anymore) himself, but they were not going to befriend the guy in love with the other guy they hated the most in this universe. (Or maybe 2nd most, Akhenaden had kind of taken the first place after Bakura learned he was the one operating the raid of Kul Elna.)
However… that didn’t mean Bakura was going to forbid everyone in their life to interact with Yugi. He was friend with Ryou and Marik, and now Kat’s coworker. And apparently Kek was sometimes invited to play games with his group too. Now that Bakura was thinking about it, it would be less and less easy to avoid him. So, while Bakura didn’t want to talk to him, being aggressive wouldn’t serve anything. It would just make things more difficult for Ryou or Kat.
“If you want to play, go see that with Ryou to do your own campaign,” Bakura grumbled to make it clear that they would be in no way involved with Yugi in a game. However they looked at Kat. “You can play two campaigns if you want.” As to say, if she ever wanted to play with Yugi, they weren’t going to be mad at her for it.
(continued from here)
Kat smiled, taking Bakura’s hand in her own.
“Okay,” she said with a soft smile, switching languages as well out of habit. “Though we should let Ryou run the session that way you can take some frustration out on the NPC’s as well. Maybe this time I can play my Eldritch Scoundrel without getting turned into a demon,” she said with a small laugh.
Yugi’s eyes seemed to light up in realization.
“You play Monster World?” he asked in mild surprise towards Kat.
Kat panicked a little, her eyes immediately darting to Bakura.
She had a feeling Yugi was about to ask if he could join, and she knew Bakura’s thoughts about being in the same room as Yugi in general…not to mention she didn’t know how to politely explain that they wouldn’t be playing a ‘normal’ campaign.
“...um…I do...” she said slowly, constantly glancing up at Bakura and hoping they would say something.

“You tell me,” Bakura said, rolling their eyes. Then they laughed softly at Kat's idea. “That's not a bad idea. We should ask Kek and Ryou, I'm sure they would be down for it.”
Bakura slowly released her, feeling being watched. He was trying to be discreet, but it was obvious that Yugi was waiting by the door, probably trying to find the right moment to go inside without bothering them. Well, it wasn't like Bakura wanted to stay longer than it was necessary in the shop.
“Let's go home,” they said, switching to Japanese to indicate to Yugi their conversation was over.
(continued from here)
Kat frowned and then scowled.
“I assume everything was going great when they thought you were a man. Go figure. Different era, same bullshit,” she said bitterly.
She breathed out a heavy sigh.
“And now I am back to wanting to kill something. Is it bad that I kinda want to do another one of those Shadow campaigns just to vent my frustrations and have some fun while doing it?”

Bakura winced a bit at the question.
“I had a nice lunch, if that counts in any way.” Bakura said.
Honestly, they were still pissed about it, but right now they didn't care about that stupid job anymore. They were just worried about Kat and angry at Anubis. Bakura sighed.
“It was… Something. I guess. I don't think I'll be called back. Apparently they forgot to write in the hiring notice that a dick was needed."
(continued from here)
Kat couldn’t help but smile a little at her wife’s continuous enthusiasm in wanting to kick Anubis’ ass.
“Listen, he’s my father, so if anyone gets to kick his ass, it’s me. Sorry, that’s just how it works. Unfortunately that means neither of us are doing anything irrational in that regard anytime soon.”
She took a small, calming breath, feeling better now that Bakura was here. She stood on her toes a bit and gave her wife a brief kiss.
“I’m hoping your day went better than mine,” she said, trying to shift the focus onto Bakura’s interview.

Bakura frowned. He was thinking the same. Anubis sudden interest for his daughter was strange. The guy was plotting something and Bakura didn't like it. Fuck. Could they really never have a break? Kul Elna, Kat..  Why was there always something to threaten their family? Was Bakura being happy such an offence to the Gods that they had to find every single way to ruin it?
Bakura was boiling with anger against Anubis, but it wasn't the moment to let it out. They pressed their forehead against Kat’s.
“You're not getting anywhere. You're here, with me, I won't let anyone take you. And for the irrational act…” Bakura snorted. “Leave it to me. I'll kick Anubis' ass for you anytime.”
(continued from here)
Kat was silent for a long moment before responding, taking that moment to just feel less all over the place internally.
“Nothing really, my father just showed up and was looking around like yesterday…but without the commentary.”
She took a deep breath before continuing.
“I think the only reason he left was because Yugi told him to. Like me, he probably doesn’t want to tempt summoning the Pharaoh…though for obviously different reasons.”
Another deep breath.
“I’m not afraid of him, but the way he’s acting…he’s planning something and I don’t like it.”
Her hands began to ball up into fists, grabbing some of Bakura’s shirt in the process.
“I don’t like not knowing. It makes me feel powerless, and that pisses me off a little. I’m worried that if I run into him when I’m by myself…I’ll do something irrational.”
Having said that, she relaxed a little.
“I’ve done really well in not messing up so badly that I have no choice but to go back. I’d like to keep it that way.”

Bakura was relieved to see that no harm had been done to Kat. She only seemed to be shaken up. They wrapped their arms around her and held her tight. Bakura kissed her hair as one hand went to brush it.
“I'm here,” they said in Middle Egyptian. “You're safe.”
Bakura then gently put both hands on her cheeks to look at her face.
“What happened?”
(continued from here)
After Yugi had called Ryou, he asked Kat if she wanted to talk about it. At first she was hesitant, but the stress of things ended up making it all flood out. He already had the basics from Ryou about the how and why she was here, but Ryou hadn’t mentioned the exile part, or the part about how her own father had barely defended her (or how he had this habit of treating her like she was just a little girl playing pretend). She also told him about the recent random appearances, and how Anubis had shown up in her home just the day before. When the shop door practically burst open, Yugi was quick to stand and go out front, ready to give Anubis a piece of his mind if he had dared to come back.
Kat was relieved when she heard the exchange of voices in the other room and was even more relieved when she saw Bakura, prompting her to immediately go to them and place her arms around her wife as a source of comfort and security.

Bakura managed to occupy most of their day. They spend a bit of time in the arcade, then once it was time for lunch then bought some onigiris at a small shop owned by a grandma with a broken back. Bakura had a nice chat with her before going to the park to sit somewhere and eat.
They hesitated about going home after, but they would go out again in a couple of hours to get Kat… So Bakura decided to have a nap here instead. Their mood was a bit better now. Well, until they got a text from Kek saying his interview went well and asking how had been Bakura’s.
The remainder pissed off the thief, but they didn't have the heart to tell the blond to fuck off because he sounded genuinely excited in his text about maybe getting a job. Just because Bakura was angry didn't mean they should spoil Kek's enthusiasm. So they decided to just not answer the text. Not to mention it would soon be the end of Kat's shift. Bakura got up and stretched their back a bit.
Then they got a call from Ryou. Bakura rolled his eyes, annoyed. They thought Ryou was probably calling to have some news since Bakura didn't answer neither his or Kek’s text. He ignored the call. But then, Ryou called again.
Okay. For the boy to be calling a second time immediately, maybe there was something else. Bakura answered the call this time.
The moment Ryou said “it is about Kat”, Bakura ran to the game shop, hearing the rest of the explanation as they went.
Bakura mumbled a quick thanks before ending the call, focusing on getting to their destination. They arrived at the shop in a record time. Bakura opened the door (or more like barged in), out of breath. They looked around, searching for Kat. Their was the sound of a door opening in the back, then Yugi appeared. They locked eyes with each other for a second, some tension being palpable in the air.
However Yugi was the first to relax. Maybe it was seeing the mess that was Bakura right now, out of breath, messy hair and a worried expression on their face, or how fast it took them to get there after he called Ryou. Anyway, Yugi stepped to the side as an invitation for Bakura to come in.
“She is in the back room.”
Bakura nodded. “Thanks.”
They walked to the door, passing by Yugi without a second glance for the boy, and entered the back room.
“Kat?”
(continued from here)
Kat spent a good portion of her workday trying to find ways to avoid being alone in the same room as Yugi. There was just too much awkward tension in the air and she didn't know how to go about having any sort of conversation with him. And she really didn’t want to risk any topics that might circle back to talking about the Pharaoh.
She managed to get through a little over half the day avoiding him when life decided things weren't already insufferable enough.
She had just stepped into the backroom when she felt a strong presence that made her want to scream. Instead of doing that, however, she peeked back into the front of the store, hoping Anubis’ visit would be nothing more than another of his observations.
Honestly, it both baffled and bothered Kat at his sudden interest in her and her new life.
Yugi did his usual greetings, which if the god acknowledged them, he did a poor job at showing it. Instead Anubis walked around silently as though he were some kind of important figure looking to buy the place (and with the expensive suit he definitely looked the part).
Kat could easily sense Yugi's apprehension and wariness over the visitor. She was also surprised at how quickly he changed from his friendly attempt to get their visitor’s attention to suddenly wearing an expression she’d only seen in television ads where few knew the truth about who was actually behind it. This prompted her to rush out from hiding in order to avoid any potential confrontation, seeing as Yugi had no idea who he was facing.
Anubis quickly turned his attention towards her and smiled.
“There you are. I was beginning to wonder if I was in the wrong place.”
“I don’t know why you’re here, and I don’t care. Leave.” Kat said bitterly.
“I’m just trying to look out for you,” Anubis replied, and while it sounded sincere, it also made Kat furious.
“No!” she screamed while pointing a finger in his face. “You’re just looking out for you and your reputation!”
Yugi came up beside her, standing in protective manner with a hand on her shoulder while giving Anubis a firm glare.
“You’re bothering my coworker, so I’m going to have to ask you to leave immediately.”
Anubis slowly looked between the two before giving a small bow of the head.
“As you wish.”
And with that he turned and left the shop.
As soon as he was out of sight Kat ran off to the back room where she leaned against the wall and slid down it while shaking. Whether she was shaking from anger or fear, she didn’t know. It could have been both.
“Are you okay?”Yugi asked as he slowly approached and sat down beside her.
Kat was silent for a moment before answering.
“...no. Can you have Ryou call Bakura? I want them to come here for me, not wait a few streets over.”
She hesitated a moment before adding, “That was Anubis…my father.”
It took Yugi all of two seconds for realization to appear on his face before he nodded and pulled out his phone.

The first part of Bakura’s interview went relatively well. The thief was appearing confident, answering each question as if it was natural and not lies after lies. They prepared well with Kek and Ryou so Bakura didn't have any surprise questions that would have destabilised them. The only bad point the guy was taking is that Bakura lacked knowledge in fighting techniques (others would have some martial arts belts in their cv or a certificate in a fighting sport) so they couldn’t prove that they knew how to defend someone against an assailant. But Bakura, with their sharp tongue, didn't let this stop them. Assuring that they would have no issue taking a test, and affirming that they didn’t get those scars by playing around in a gym, seemed to convince the guy.
However, near the end, he seemed satisfied and asked for Bakura’s info… and full stopped when realised, looking at Bakura’s ID, that the thief was marked down as female. Of course it hadn't been obvious with the way Bakura dressed today.
That ended with an extremely pissed off Bakura, who did their best to not break the guy's skull, as the man changed his behavior, looking uncomfortable and like je had changed his mind. Bakura controlled themselves because hitting the guy would have not helped at all.
They left the building in a bad mood, not sure now about the end result of this interview. Bakura glanced at their phone. They had a text from Ryou wishing them good luck, they didn’t notice it before. Bakura sighed. Well… They would certainly need luck for this to work. Honestly they were going to be even more pissed if Kek got the job but not them just because he had something between the legs that Bakura didn't.
The thief then wandered to the city, trying to occupy themselves and think about something else until it was time to go for Kat.

Kat spent the rest of her walk to work daydreaming about a house big enough for Bakura to host Monster World campaigns for their friends. Surprisingly, she found herself including Marik…and even Yugi. She also knew it would probably be a long time before Bakura would allow Yugi in one of their campaigns.
As she walked through the door to the she found Yugi standing behind the counter instead of Mr. Mutou. There was a bit of awkward silence between them for what felt like too long before Yugi cleared his throat to speak.
“Grandpa had some appointments today so it’s just you and me.”
“...oh,” was all Kat could reply.
More awkwardness as they both just stood there.
“I can lea-”
“Thanks.”
Kat blinked in confusion.
“Thanks?”
“Yeah. For what you said. I’m sure Atem has his reasons. Maybe it’s like you said with the time moving differently there or something,” Yugi clarified.
Kat wasn’t sure how to respond.
“Um, so…I guess I should go check the back room,” she said as an excuse to just stop awkwardly standing there.
She didn’t wait for a response before rushing off. She could tell it was going to be a long day.

Bakura smiled at Kat.
“Yeah… It isn’t so bad to have a goal. I mean. For after being done with the soul hunt.”
It was now time for the couple to go their separate ways. Bakura kissed their wife goodbye, then went to the direction of their possible future job’s building. As much as the job itself didn’t interest them, Kat was right. The soul hunt aside, it would help them secure a better future for them both. It was with that idea in mind that Bakura continued their way, feeling a little more light in their heart.
Bakura arrived in advance (they figured it would leave a better impression) and announced themself at the front desk. The same receptionist from last time was here. She quickly straightened her back and arranged her hair when she saw Bakura. It looked like she had been waiting for them to come back. While Bakura was flattered, maybe they should make it known they were married if they got the job. They wouldn’t want Kat to murder this poor girl.
The thief was instructed to wait in the lobby, on the seats on the right, and someone would come for them. Bakura did as instructed. They didn’t have to wait long for a man to call their name, and the thief stood up, walking to the first ever job interview of their existence.

“Yeah, I really enjoy the ‘needing to eat’ part,” Kat said with a small giggle. “And I guess the ‘needing sleep’ part isn’t so bad. Especially since it means getting to fall asleep and wake up next to my favorite person. The ‘waking up for a job’ part is what sucks.”
She looked up at Bakura with a smile.
“Though, I suppose it’s a decent enough trade-off if it means helping make things better for us.”
