Digital Minimalism Flag

Both flags are inspired by Cal Newport's book Digital Minimalism. He's the face of digital minimalism, so it made sense to take inspiration from the book cover.

Rule Following

The 5 yellow lines signify the levels of difficulty in Newport's digital decluttering method. The circle in the middle is a simplification of the 5 rings from the book cover. Which seems to be a simplification of the cover of Greg McKeown's book, Essentialism.

I stuck with the yellow because it reminds me of the sun, which a subscriber of digital minimalism might see more of.

My friend told me this one looks like a tamale, and now I can't unsee it 💀

Rule Breaking

I copied the 5 rings from, and while it makes more sense thematically, it is visually harder to read at a distance.

The 30 black lines represent the number of days for the final level of Cal Newport's decluttering method. I also made the background black and white to represent the grayscale mode many digital minimalists put on their devices.

If I wanted to break more rules, I would add the text "Digital Minimalism" in red to mirror McKeown's book.

i came across this article on my RSS feed.

the poster above caught my eye because of the diamond-like shapes at the bottom. it's fun to look at

it took me a while to figure out how i could modify brush

i had trouble placing the eyes and mouth in a pleasing way

things i like:

the simplicity of the colors and doodles on a mural

the brown prevents the piece from being too colorful

the least readable color (yellow) is used for the most legible word (GO)

color wheel using linear dodge and various opacities

i created the grayscale by layering equal amounts of individual red, green, and blue brush strokes with 5% opacity. the more strokes, the whiter the line got.

The first emoji is of an upset dog, in the style of Apple's emojis.

The second emoji is a head with a finger, indicating that the user thinks someone else is unserious. I've made it in Google's style of emoji.

i really like how the albums are displayed, i haven't seen anything like that before. i also like the light green theme.
