The Hunger Games
An apt name for the afternoon's adventure on Sunday, as not only were we off to see Hunger Games at the cinema, but it was also quite a mission to fill our empty stomachs in the middle of a Sunday afternoon. After an unsuccessful pop in to The Thatched Inn, Abbotsham, some googling and consulting of the list took us to The Williams Arms, Wrafton to sample their wares. Verdict: Well, with every burger we like to sample just the plain burger before consuming it's entirety. We don't allow for any of the 'faff' that comes with it to compensate for the flavour. Unfortunately, this burger is clearly served with red onion jam as it is really bland and just generally lacking. I would go so far as to describe it as 'OK'. Served with homemade chips and a small side salad. Rating: 5/10 Price: £10.50 Next visit: tbc...

Eager as a Beaver...
Feeling like we should at least try and be healthy, we visited the Beaver Inn, Appledore after a swim to try and burn off some of the calories that we were going to consume. (If you’ve seen the plate of chips you’ll see what we mean)
Verdict: What I would describe as a ‘butcher’s burger’, so not homemade but not lacking in flavour either, well-cooked and moist, and an enjoyable eat. The bap was in ratio with the size of te burger, and wasn't a cheapie supermarket bap, always good news! Plenty of cheese in every capacity, especially as we had cheesy garlic chips to accompany it (they were SO delicious!) and a dressed salad on the side. Not a winner but definitely an enjoyable meal.
Rating: 7/10 Price: £8.75 Next visit: William's Arms, Wrafton

Autumn Cycle...
A free afternoon for both of us made it an ideal venture to do the last of our Instow pub visits and burger tasting, with a visit to the Instow Arms.
Verdict: Once again, it seems that appearance can really be deceiving. Despite the nice chunky chips accompanying our burger, with regards to the burger there really isn’t much to write home about…
As you can see in the picture, the burger:bap ratio firstly isn’t quite right, it was lacking in flavour, and was once again one that tasted of a bit of salt and pepper and minced beef that had just been mushed together, our final qualm is there were hints in both our burgers of gristle, which is a major NO. Sorry Instow Arms, you really didn’t do it for us.
Rating: 4/10
Price: £10.95, or something astronomical like that…
N.B. Just checked their menu, it was £11.95 and an extra £1.50 for cheese! May be having a minor heart attack right now, and not because I've eaten too many burgers!
Next visit: The Beaver Inn, Appledore.

Don't Bank On It...
Saturday lunchtime and the realisation that we are getting significantly behind with our burger challenge led us to lunch at 62 The Bank, in Barnstaple. Verdict: Floury bap - check. Melted tasty cheese - check. (This was a combination of mozzarella, red leicester and cheddar which they call 'Rio' cheese) Flavour - check. These were all points winners with us, however, we did find that the texture of the burger itself was somewhat 'iffy' and dry, which is definitely no winner for us. Served with delicious chunky chips, coleslaw and side salad. Price: £8.50 (Please note that this was at lunchtime, I believe the evening menu may be different) Rating: 6.5/10 Next visit: The Instow Arms

Didn't even finish!
A quieter Friday than usual and a spot of nice weather allowed us to frequent the Pier House in Westward Ho! one lunchtime in September. The weather was pleasant, although a little breezy, so we sat outside and enjoyed the fine view and sampled the Pier House's burger offering. Verdict: For possibly the first time EVER, neither Jenny or I finished this burger... it was THAT disappointing. Flavour was completely lacking, in which it most closely resembled a McDonald's burger, no kidding. It was bland, greasy, and the texture was somewhat obscure, I can't quite put my finger on it, chewy but not dry, quite rubbery (as was the cheese) and just general disappointment contained in a bap, at least the ratio was okay.... Rating: 3/10 Sorry Pier House, but there was no winner here!

We were hit by the 'WOW' factor!
Firstly, I must sincerely apologise for my lack of both burger blogging and consumption rcently, various matters have meant that it hasn't been able to happen, sadly. So I return to late July when we visited Moran's in Westward Ho! which coincided with dancing from the Exmoor Border Morris team a little bit later. We checked the menu outside to ensure that a burger was of course an option and happily went in and took a table in the outside seating area, where promptly a breeze ensued. On looking at the menu, to our HORROR, there was no burger to be seen! After a chat with our rather lovely waitress it transpired that it was the LUNCH menu on the glass window, not the evening one! Fortunately, it seemed she was on our wavelength and with a few words to the chef we were promptly enjoying the aforementioned burger. Hooray! Verdict: There's not much that can be said wrong for this mighty bit of meat, it was flavoursome (flavours of teriyaki and chilli if I remember correctly), delicious cheese, appropriate burger:bap ratio, it was well-cooked (not chewy, dry or pink!) and was served with delicious chunky chips, a dressed side salad and massive onion rings. Rating: 9.5/10 (and that's only because we haven't finished yet!) BIG THUMBS UP!

Festival Comedown...
Packing up our tents after a fantastic weekend at Somersault festival in Filleigh and a mooch around to confirm that there was no alternative food available we headed to The Seagate in Appledore. Verdict: Another underwhelming burger, meat and cheese were both bland, and for the first time since the challenge commenced gristle was encountered (major EWWW and shocked faces all round). There's not much more to be said really, salad provided in the burger, which had gone soggy due the burger still being pink in the middle and oozing, the bottom of the bap also encountered a similar issue. Served with skinny fries. Oddly disappointing :-( Price: £11.95 Rating: 4/10 Next visit: tbc...

Too big, too big!
So with initial plans to go to The Clinton Arms at Frithelstock, which it then transpired did not do a burger (not what their website said!) we headed out to the New Inn at Roborough. After the longest 4 mile country drive I have ever experienced we were greeted by a rather cute little pub. Verdict: This burger was a battle from start to finish, initially being asked the question of how would you like it cooked? After the mooing pink burger issue at The Rising Sun, we opted for thoroughly, which may have affected the final product. These burgers were homemade but weren't full of flavour and were quite a struggle to eat due to the thickness, if it can't fit in your mouth it's not a winner! The cheese and bap scored points but overall we were underwhelmed. Nice chunky chips and a small salad garnish accompanied. Price: £10 region. Rating: 5/10 Next visit : The Seagate Hotel, Appledore
