Despite getting accreditation, Petersburg schools have room for improvement

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Things are looking up for Petersburg schools after all city schools have received at least partial accreditation from the state. The state's new accreditation system focuses on overall growth. Some schools in the district were accredited with conditions, meaning the schools have things to work on. School administrators told 8News that students not coming to school and keeping teachers in the school district remain some of Petersburg's biggest challenges. Read more here

Petersburg City Public Schools may be accredited by the state but are dealing with a major concern – the absenteeism of the students. Chief Academic Officer Cyndee Blount says that schools are having a large problem with absenteeism. Blount reported that some students remain absent for more than 10 days. All the city schools have only received partial accreditation from the state because of this. In order for the schools to achieve a full state accreditation, they should work on breaking such barriers. Some of the schools have planned to recognized students with improved and perfect attendance. This is to further motivate students to be always present in classes. The school district will also have a community meeting to come up with more effective strategies that will encourage children to regularly attend school.
