martha spends a lot of time being ‘invisible’. she’s surrounded by her family’s chaos. she’s in the aftermath of the doctor’s grief. it was during her season that we truly got an explanation for how perception filters worked. how they let people’s eyes just skate past the object or person it’s connected to. (there’s some extra point to make there.) her final arc involved staying out of sight from the master and his aliens. however. all these things that made her invisible. they were also things that made her seen. she’s the voice of reason that her family turns to. (shown as early as the first few minutes of season 3). the doctor, whilst yes dealing with the loss of rose, did love martha jones because she was martha jones. she was a doctor in ways that he never was. she had to remain hidden from the master, but on her own, she made her presence known and gave people something to hope for. word of mouth wouldn’t have worked unless the people didn’t have something to believe in. and whilst martha believed in the doctor. the people of earth believed in her. she’s so important to me.

The way the TARDIS is inherently cosmic horror. You live in a machine that is actually a sentient creature that can create and erase rooms at will. It contains time and space, all of it. It can leak time if damaged, changing your history forever and creating horrid paradoxes. It's totally unpredictable, anything could happen if it's malfunctioning. It's so big that you could get lost in it for days. weeks. years, if she doesn't let you find your way back you could die without water and food. She's able to change her architecture whenever she wants. It's a labyrinth. It could lock you in and never let you out. It's a flying bomb of history and timelines, if it explodes, the whole universe is in danger. She could very much kill you in an horrid amount of different ways. She's beautiful and she's able to help you and take care of you, but because she chooses to, not because you want her to. She has complete free will and control of your life. It's up to you to trust her.

And in most cases, yes, she does care about other people. But in "The Wedding of River Song" she honestly, genuinely, believes that the total of the universe would hurt less than she would hurt, for killing a man she only met once before. Objectively, she gets how irrational that is. But subjectively, she still believes it, because she loves him that much.

That's why she thinks she's a psychopath.
