I think one of my biggest Touhou takes is that all attempts to make touhou Scary And Dark (both official and unofficial) have been largely very silly.

Like there are probably people who can express this more eloquently than me, but: when your character designs are mostly cute and silly, and when what happens "on-screen" (weather games or manga or whatever) ranges from "funny magical hijinks" to "battle shounen plots in which yes there are explosions but everyone is still Fine" then it's not really going to matter much if you THEN write a few fun facts style lore books that say stuff like "oh this cute silly character definitely kills and eats a lot of people off-screen, trust me". You've already established a lighthearted Tone! Of course a lot of people are largely going to ignore that dark detail and just pay attention to the more lighthearted stuff that happens on-screen, which is the actual main content.

This is why the Fortune Teller incident felt so out-of-place, it was a one-time thing that sure aligns with the lore books but largely goes against the established on-screen tone. It's like if idk Looney Tunes had a really serious and melancholic episode in which someone dies but then otherwise the show continued like usual, and then if you went "hey what was that about" the fans replied "well the characters constantly use guns it was bound to happen at some point".

And like, I know, Touhou isn't Just Looney Tunes, I know there are Themes and stuff. But the specific take that touhou is Really Dark is imo kinda silly, like no amount of implied lore or fanworks is gonna make me care that Nitori is probably killing people (and this is Scary) when every time I check she's doing some Doofenshmirtz-tier stuff.
