31 days of Horror - Anthology List: Day 31 - Tales from the Hood (1995)
youtube
I don't really say I have a favorite horror movie. My opinions change day to day and sub genre by sub genre. But if I had to pick something if there was a gun to my head it would probably be Tales from the Hood. I've probably seen this movie the most of any horror movie that i've ever been graced with. I quote it on the daily. It lives rent free in my mind. Of all the movies this one is the hardest one to pick a favorite segment. For a first time I'll just go with the wrap around. Clarence Williams III just chews up the scenery with such fucking glee. There are moments in cinema you can tell the actor is just really having a good time and i am very sure he was having the time of his life as the undertaker in this one. While i could go on an on about this movie or any of the others on the list, it is that time to blow out the candle and bid farewell to another spooky season. But the winds of fall will be back some day. I'll be back someday. Happy Halloween, spookies.

31 days of Horror - Anthology List: Day 30 - Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965)
youtube
This movie here I've probably seen more than any other horror movie besides one. I found it on HBO back in high school. I recorded that bitch to VHS. I watched that VHS to a blur. It was a comfort movie when I just needed some back ground noise. This puppy kicked off the Amicus anthology trend of the 60s and 70s and to me is probably the most fun. Of course with Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and Donald Sutherland you really couldnt help but have a fun popcorn horror flick on your hands. This one is a little less EC Comics "the had it coming" in plot however. My favorite segment is "Voodoo". Jazz trumpeter hears a voodoo ritual while on vacation and decides to turn it into his next hit piece. Surely you can guess how that works out for him. Is it scary? no, it's loaded with cheese but maybe it's the trumpet player still in me that makes me love it so much. Anyway check it out. I think you can find the whole thing on youtube should you desire to.

31 days of Horror - Anthology List: Day 29 - Creepshow 2 (1987)
youtube
Though not as good as the original, Creepshow 2 has some banger horror moments. The format pretty much is the same as the previous but it feels less comic book-y if that makes sense. My favorite segment is The Raft. Another from a Stephen King short, you get the blob in a lake with a splash of human drama. Which is impressive considering how short this is. You also get solid gore. Check it out if you haven't.

31 days of Horror - Anthology List: Day 28 - Creepshow (1982)
youtube
Truly a classic and probably one of the first movies that comes to mind when somebody brings up horror anthology. I could was poetic but why when I could be watching Creepshow itself? Favorite segment? Either the Crate or The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill. There is just something fun about King himself being a backwoods hick that cant keep his hands off things he shouldn't be touching that just hit the right spot.

31 days of Horror - Anthology List: Day 27 - The Mortuary Collection (2019)
youtube
Spanning the 1950's through the 80's, The Mortuary Tales is another anthology tapping into the tongue-in-cheek dark humor of EC Comics. Maybe it's my love of period piece horror that makes me like this one so much, but i really did have a lot of fun watching this one. There is only one segment that i could take or leave and I love that the wrap around links to another story. My favorite segment is "Unprotected" were a frat boy in the 60's takes home something he wasn't expecting after hooking up during a party. Check it out.

31 days of Horror - Anthology List: Day 26 - Memories (1995)
youtube
I will always advocate for animation whenever i can. Memories is three shorts by some of the greats of anime and totally worth the watch. Why it's on the list is the first story however. "Magnetic Rose" might be one of the greatest moments in horror I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. The crew of a space junker receive an SOS from an ancient space vessel so they investigate. It shares a little in tone with the likes of Alien or Event Horizon but only in atmosphere and tension. I've never seen a story quite like it before which is great. But for as good as the story is, the animation is the real thrill. Seriously even if you only watch one part, watch "Memories. You will not regret it.

31 days of Horror - Anthology List: Day 25 - Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)
youtube
Much like Ju-on, this isnt the traditional anthology. In fact, I'm once again making the argument that it IS an anthology in the first place. This time I'm making my argument based on the source material. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is based on a trilogy of youth books by the same name that contains various stories from around the world reworked for the younger reading level. It was my gateway to horror as it was for many an older horror head. So when I watched this movie i got that old magic feeling in my spirit again that seeing the first volume in the book fair gave me so many moons ago. The format of the movie actually does a pretty good job of reflecting the book's anthology nature without actually breaking into complete parts. Every story referenced, while woven through the protagonists, could be fairly self contained if you were to break them up to just the stories bits themselves. For example, you could easily cut "Harold" to just the central bits of it's story into a short and it would read perfectly find, same with "Big Toe" and so on and so forth. If anything the over arching plot is the wrap around that we normally see in an anthology, just more blended with the content. Anyway whether you agree or not i do highly recommend this movie for the viewing. Yes, it's meant for a younger audience but who cares? Not ever horror head in the making is ready to dive into the deep end. There needs to be more gateway horror. We had it when I was a kid with movies like "The Lady in White" or "Something Wicked this Way Comes" or the tv companion to SSTTNTD, Are You Afraid of the Dark. Let kids have their fun too. Favorite segment, "The Pale Lady" with a small nod to "Harold" as the latter gave me years of an irrational fear of seeing a scarecrow on my roof as a kid. Check it out.

31 days of Horror - Anthology List: Day 24 - Trick r' Treat (2007)
youtube
Trick r' Treat is one of those movies that just instantly became a must watch for the spooky season. The movie just captures that magic of Halloween for me, makes my inner child giddy. I love how the segments all are related to each other in some form. Really i could just was poetic about it all day. Favorite segment is a toughie for me. I think I'll have to go with "Halloween School Bus Massacre". There is something so pleasing not just seeing the bullies get it but them being children really just made it better. Not that i dislike kids, i just appreciate movies that don't let children be automatically safe. Let's face it, some kids have it come.
