To end the month, I present my favorite movie of the year so far. Is Evil Dead Rise the best movie ever? No. Probably not even the best movie i saw for this list in terms of pure cinema. But I dont love movies for their cinematic value. I had fun. Pure and simple. I had so much fun watching Rise and as a fan of Evil Dead I have to say it is my second favorite of the franchise, following very closely behind Evil Dead 2. The movie is mean in a good way. Evil Dead has always been very mean spirited but that's what makes it work. How many bad things can happen to our protags? Rise pulls no punches. Anybody can, and most likely will, get it. Also doesn't hurt the leads are hot. Yes, I can fully admit I have a crush on a deadite, I'm not shamed. Story follows a former group as she goes home for help only to find her sister in just as bad a spot in her life after a divorce. The movie very much reminded me of Demons 2 but will actual likeable characters as a plot (dont tell me demons 2 has a plot, it's italian, plot is just foreplay). Seriously, this movie was just fun. Check it out. And with that we have come to the end of this journey. I enjoyed working through a backlog of horror. The new wave of horror gives me hope for the genre as a fan. I can't wait to see where horror goes next. Happy Halloween!

31 days of Horror - Fresh Enough List: Day 30 - The Black Phone (2022)

Doing you the favor of not putting the trailer for this one. It ruins nearly the whole movie, and this film is too damn good to be ruined like that. The movie takes place in the 70s and follows a boy named Finney and his sister Gwen. Several boys have gone missing and soon it's Finney's turn. Can he do what they other's couldn't and get away? Once again this isn't a gore movie but it is brutal. There is a lot of violence against children. Yes, it's tasteful but if you have a problem with children in danger this is not the movie for you. I do highly recommend everyone who can, watch this movie. It's on my top ten movies of all time, perhaps even top 5. Certainly top 5 is horror. Every performance is amazing. Watch. This. Movie.

So the "real" real reason I posted the first movie yesterday was because I didn't want to talk about this movie without it. I highly recommend watching them back to back. Satan's Slaves 2 picks up a couple of years after the first movie. The remaining family have moved to a very rundown apartment complex in what looks to be the middle of nowhere. They are all dealing with the previous trauma in their own ways but it isn't going well for any of them. There is also a tsunami about to hit the area well all in the apartment will be trapped. Not to mention things are starting to happen again. Things like the last time. Again you can find it on Shudder. Check it out.

Drawtober Day 28: Satan's Slaves

31 days of Horror - Fresh Enough List: Day 28 - Satan's Slaves (2018)

Sooo not quite in the time frame i wanted to focus on for my list but fuck it, it's fresh to me. Satan's Slaves isn't the most thrilling of title translations for this Indonesian gem, but trust, it's a banger. Set in the early 80s, the story follows the family of a dying former pop star as her family struggles to stay on their feet. Things quickly get weird as old legends are spread and there seem to be spirits that don't mean then well. There is no summary that I can give that will do this movie justice. It was nice to get a movie from a non christian standpoint. The family members are superbly acted. Really just watch the movie. I caught part of this on the Shudder live channel and i just had to watch the rest it caught me thoroughly. Check it out on Shudder.

31 days of Horror - Fresh Enough List: Day 27 - Werewolves Within (2021)

You know what the world didn't know it needed? A movie that is Fargo mixed with Clue. Yet we got it and we should be thankful for it. Based loosely around the Ubisoft game of the same name, Werewolves Within follows a Forest ranger as he moves to a new post right slap in the middle of a land dispute between a pipeline and the residents of the small little town. Bodies fall. People do hilariously stupid things. We get some good one liners. All around a good time. If you liked Clue you will most likely like this movie. Certainly a gem in my viewing.

Drawtober Day 26: No One Will Save You

31 days of Horror - Fresh Enough List: Day 26 - No One Will Save You (2023)

I love experimental approaches to horror. One of the most interesting movies I've ever seen is Pontypool, which is basically sound horror since you dont really see anything, just hear it. No One Will Save You is similarly experimental as it has like 2 lines of dialog in the whole thing. The movie is a home invasion story where the invasion is of the ET variety. It's not just one alien or even type of alien. The lead is dealing with her own trauma and issues as well. Honestly I can't even get into more than this. Everything else is spoiler and the spoilers will ruin things in the movie. Certainly one of the top films of this year. Catch it on Hulu.

31 days of Horror - Fresh Enough List: Day 25 - X (2022)

When I heard that A24 was backing a slasher I was in. Didn't know what to expect. What I got was a fun ride with some nice depth. Fun isn't the way I would describe most A24 flicks but yup, fun is exactly what I found. X centers around a group of people trying to make a hit porno on the cheap. We are graced with stereotype breaking characters and a killer you don't expect all wrapped in the most uncomfortable tortilla shell. Seriously, it's so good. I'm keeping the plot bare bones because the twists matter. I will say the trailer shows a lot but doesn't really spoil anything. So I'm just gonna shut up but I will say there is nudity, male and female, dead cow, not so agreeable sexual happenings. If you are a stick in the mud, keep it moving. If not, enjoy yourself.

Drawtober Day 24: Talk to me

31 days of Horror - Fresh Enough List: Day 24 - Talk to Me (2022)

Talk to Me is a story of grief, bad choices, and friends that really aren't good for each other. In proper A24 fashion this is not a movie that's going to speak to everyone. The trailer may make it look like a classic teen ghost kills em all movie, but it's not. This Aussie flick has more teeth than that. We follow Mia as she is dealing with the death of her mother. There are a lot more things going on with her but those are spoiler territory and explain a lot of the bad choices she will make in the course of the movie. This is gory. Like uncomfortable gory with one part as there is some very severe self inflicted trauma. Most of the characters aren't the most likeable but it doesn't mean they aren't masterfully performed. I would really like to see them all in other roles for sure. Also looking forward to more from the directors as this was a debut effort from youtubers. The story is heavy but worth checking out.
