The biggest failure in modern anime fandom is that, somewhere down the line, people lost fact that Ouran High School Host Club is a satire of other shoujo

Imagine a 3D host club game in the spirit of 2000s games with an open world and a character editor, where you could choose any outfit from the manga and anime. And you could walk around the school and talk to students and do side quests, maybe even have romance routes. And there would be locations like ski resort, beach, twins' mansion, supermarket etc. etc. I would definitely play it.

i first watched ohshc when i was like 10 on a bootleg dvd bought off a bootleg anime con in mexico (licensed items are for first worlders, real otakus make do...) and who knows where the japanese to spanish subs came from, probably a hero-without-cape rogue translation team doing their best, but in the scene from the pilot where tamaki is helping haruhi gather her stuff from the fountain there was a line in the subs that was something like "water cannot harm handsome men" and when i tell you that this is something i have quoted my entire life whenever i'm caught up in the rain or get splashed on or whatever and it makes it not a big deal. water literally cannot harm handsome men. that's literally a proverb from the bible. to me. anyway imagine my surprise when a couple years ago i made my bestie watch ohshc with licensed english subs and tamaki at no point says this neither on netflix nor any other translation i could find online. well he said it in my heart

Just read a tweet that said “OHSHC isn’t something that should be adapted nowadays because it’s too controversial” and… honestly, media literacy is dead.

Like—yes. Of course Ouran High School Host Club has flaws. It was made in the early 2000s. A lot of jokes aged poorly. Some portrayals are clumsy. But what people miss is that even with those flaws, it was wildly progressive for its time. OHSHC was never meant to be just another shojo. It was a shojo, yes, but also a commentary on shojo. It took the ridiculous gender roles, the classism, the romantic clichés—and exaggerated them to absurdity. And somehow, behind the parody, it still managed to say some genuinely radical things for its time. It was playing with the genre while being in love with it.

It was campy, chaotic, full of contradictions—but still managed to deliver genuine emotion and character growth. It wanted to say something. It tried.

That’s why it’s the perfect candidate for a remake—not because it was flawless, but because it wasn’t. Because a modern adaptation could take all of that potential and update it with the care and nuance it always deserved.

... Meanwhile, half of today’s shonen still rely on fanservice, outdated gender roles, and paper-thin female characters and somehow no one bats an eye.

But sure. Let’s act like Ouran is the problem.

He has a chicken named Piyo and a tanuki named Pome <3 and they terrorize each other (it's ok they also cuddle 🥺). He got Piyo as a baby chick at a festival and I can't for the life of me remember how tf he got the tanuki but like. He did. So 😭

Tamaki actually only has Antoinette in Japan, never in France! In the anime, he gets her in a pet shop in ep 17, and in the manga, his mother's dog gives birth to puppies, so she sends one to Japan for Tamaki to keep him company (which HURTS-). She usually has a bow around her neck, shes very friendly and excitable, I'm pretty sure she's a golden retriever (?), and she's Tamaki's best friend (other than Kyoya). She's also considered a work-perk of the second Suoh mansion's staff lol. She's as much of an attention whore as Tamaki.

We don't actually have a lot of information on Noir 💔💔💔 we have like THREE sentences in the last volume of the manga and it PAINS me. The information is as follows: the cat is found as a stray by Kyoya's bodyguard Hotta, but then it picks Kyoya so Hotta loses his new cat lol; it's a dark-colored cat either named Noir or Noel depending on the translation; and Kyoya occasionally sends Tamaki e-mails that are only a picture of Noir and nothing else lmao.

And then I rewatched it and I was like ??? did these people not realize that Ouran was a comedy and a satire?
