I've gone on record as opposing the British in all things but I gotta say they have something with the term "faffing about." It's immediately identifiable as a Britishism so you can't really use it in other contexts, because then the conversation has to be about that, now. But there's really no direct equivalent for undirected, nervous time-wasting in American English. The closest we have is "messing around" which implies making it worse, "puttering" which implies making it better, "goofing off" which implies you're having fun and "laziness/idling" implies you're at rest.

"Faffing about" is none of those. It calls to mind a flutter of feathers, or a shuffling of papers to no particular end. You aren't busy, but you aren't not busy exactly. You're engaged in nondescript and nonproductive activity, from which you don't expect any result. You're faffing about. It's perfect.

I took my little brother (autistic, mostly non verbal) out and he was using his voice keyboard to tell me something, and this little boy (maybe 4 or 5?) heard him and asked me "Is he a robot??" I tried to explain to him that no, he isn't a robot, he just communicates differently, but my darling brother was in the background max volume "I am robot I am robot I am robot I am robot"

I feel like the thing thats really different about the polish trans experience is that because the language is heavily gendered and asking about a persons gender is very much not normalized, now that my body looks mostly androgynous people started referring to me with grammatical forms that have never been uttered by human tongue before. Last week a woman couldn’t decide what gender I was so after trying several she settled on speaking to me in plural and infinitive
