                          A Discovery Switch:
                                 Tinuy-an Sayaw Festival
Karawasan Festival is not just a festival to cherish, but a moment to revitalize a past of prosperity and goodness. As part of the Charter Day Celebration, a dream come true for the City Government of Bislig to explicitly highlight the distinct ethnic dances depicting the movement of crabs every 17th day of September. Moreover, Karawasan is actually a collective name given to the member of the crab family found to be great in the salty and freshwater of Bislig. The lavishness of such local marine resource has, in fact, made Bislig City known to other places in the country. Meanwhile, it has been replaced by the recently promoted "Tinuy-an Sayaw Festival which actually derived from Bislig's main tourist attraction.
Tinuy-an Falls branded for its ecotourism, is renowned as the little "Niagara Falls" of the Philippines. It is a white water curtain that flows in three levels about 55 meters high and 95 meters wide. Its critically acclaimed majestic and unique natural formation was once appeared in the International Travel Magazine. It is also termed as the widest waterfalls in the Philippines.
The name derives from the Visayan word “tuyo,” which means “aim,” and not the Tagalog word that means “dry.” Tinuy-an or tinuyo-an means an intentional act to achieve a certain goal. According to legend, there was a time when cruel tribes from Agusan enslaved the Magdiwata Mountain settlers, forcing them to do much of the heavy labor, which included building and manning small boats called barotos for their enslavers. One day, while rowing their masters on barotos, the slaves decided to put an end to the plight of their people by deliberately steering the barotos towards the thundering falls. This intentional act was the basis for the name Tinuy-an Falls. Another version maintains that the name comes from the belief a higher being planned the placement of the riverbed stones. At any rate, the Tinuy-an Falls is currently the most famous tourist attractions in the area.
Later in the day, you can take refuge from the heat of the sun by walking along the scenic trails, where you will find orchids, dipterocarp trees, and ferns. It is also a perfect place to do some bird watching. If you plan to check out the two other falls further up the trail, you should have a guide with you. Take lots of pictures!
Moreover, a cultural heritage festival can provide the continuation of the cultural traditions and historical knowledge of a community. For a heritage festival to be successful, it is important to have active involvement from local residents, with representatives from a variety of schools. Involving the community assists in the process to find the right people to conduct programs, to assist or sponsor the event, and to promote the event within the region. Using local talent ensures a good community effort and gives a distinct "sense of place" for historical regional accuracy.

Booming City by the Bay
In line with the aforementioned festival, the legendary allusions as to how Bislig got its name could be traced back to the era prior to the coming of the Spanish conquistadors. The town got its name from a forest vine of the rattan family that grew in abundance along the banks of its rivers. This vine was noted for its strength and became known for saving a royal couple who crossed the swollen river in one of their hunting expeditions and who almost died as they were carried downstream by the rushing current. The legend has it that these hunters had already lost hope of surviving until they were able to cling to a vine which was about 1/4 inch in diameter called Bislig. As a sign of thanksgiving, the ruler named this place Bislig.
Thus, Bislig derived its name from the word “bizlin”, a kind of gold, “which is worth two pesos a tael. The weight of a tael is one and one-eight ounces” in the 16th century, which the natives used for trade and barter. Prior to the coming of Spaniards, this terminology was understood in Luzon and in Mindanao. In the report of the Administrator of Royal Properties Andres Mirandaola dated 8 September 1573 sent to King Philip of Spain that “much gold found in the island of Mindanao, District of Butuan, Surigao ...” It is believed that this kind of gold found in the rolling hills and mountains of the southernmost portion of Bislig and Agusan Province.
In addition, the first inhabitants of Bislig were believed to have come from the Agusan Valley in the hinterlands of Mindanao beyond the Magdiwata Mountains. These people used spears, bows and arrows and lived a semi-nomadic life and were called Manobos. They were ruled during the later part of the seventeenth century by a native leader called “Bagani”, meaning a formidable leader. They were very brave, tough and war-like. They also introduced edible crops such as rice, corn and root crops to the area. At the turn of the century, Spanish Colonizers and Missionaries imposed the rule of Spain and brought with them Tagalogs, Ilongos, and Visayans from the North as members of their expeditionary forces.
Altogether, it is still a vibrant and livable city geared towards producing agricultural and aquamarine products and becoming a leading eco-tourism destination in Southeastern Philippines. It has had its rich, turbulent and bloody, but dynamic transition that had eventually led to its present social, economic, physical and political structure. As equal say, it persistently aims to give the visitor, or new resident, all the facts they would need to know more. Including information about the gist of Bisliganon’s customs, some other festivals being celebrated, civic services, nightlife, dining out, tourist attractions, sports and recreation facilities that will surely enlighten sightseer’s young mind.

·         Born and raised in the city of Bislig at Surigao Del Sur province, I grew up in a household where many languages are spoken, albeit in only phrases. My main language is Visaya, although my mom and dad also spoke Kamayo, having lived there for 20 years during their previous marriage. Together we accustomed Bisliganon’s native dialect, also a language used by my grandparents.
At the tender age of 17, I moved to Prosperidad, Agusan Del Sur where for a year I was cut off from my compatriots. The following year, I started college. Fast forward for several months, I am currently on the brink to socialize with new faces of people. It’s because I am always surprised at the strong accents and language difficulties they had, since I had never resided in this place before. But after many years of casual talks and bonding to these fellows, I found out the remedy to my doubts. After a six-month shock immersion in a distinct Agusanon race speaking environment, I used to embrace the multi-cultural practices of Philippine Normal University, where English is widely used.
Presently, I am taking up Bachelor in English Education with Senior High school specialization as my major course. In which, I consider some possible probabilities that will help me overcome both culture gap and language barriers. In fact, I have been exposed to topics that are likely to be discussed in conversation. Big thing, I have better chance of understanding people when we talk.

“If you can get the inside right, the outside will fall into place”. I got this quote from Eckhart Tolle. This somehow resembles my perception in attaining beauty within the character.
My family was unlike other families out there. It’s because my parents have different religions. Ever since we didn’t have the chance to go to church altogether at a time. There was even a scenario in our school in which I was asked by my friends about this. Simply, I took the courage of explaining to them the whole story. Until such time, I came up to my senses. I didn’t see it as their lapses in nurturing me. Why should I? When in fact, they have raised me with the righteous values.
Though they are in different sect but still, they never failed to teach me the proper conduct of Filipino ethical customs. Specifically the ways on how elders should be treated by the younger ones. Pagmamano is highly appreciated in our home. I was even trained by my grandparents to greet people courteously. Until now, it has been a practice for me as a youngster. Accordingly, it’s a manifestation of respecting individual differences. Another thing is the positivity in life. I acquired it from my mom. Whenever I’m stressed nor deprived, I could still handle those problems by wearing a warm smile. This behavior somewhat caters me to socialize friends and to find humor in everything. With this coping tactic, I am capable of accomplishing tasks with or without any barriers. Third is being flexible in all forms. I consider my dad as a well-rounded type of man. Aside from being a hardworking father, he get used to do feasible stuffs. That’s why, I am motivated to be like him. I’m striving to learn more about new things. I also consider the resourcefulness trait of mine. In which, the collection of used plastics, cans and cellophanes could be of good help in making my projects and assignments in whatever course designs.
The fact that I am molded from a place where faith, love and hope exist; I know I could be a better person. It’s not just doing what is easy but eventually, doing what is right and being able to accept life circumstances.

“God designed you to be straight. You have a dick, so act like a man. Homosexuality is a sin.Remember Sodom and Gomorrah. It is unnatural”. These are sort of lines of those who spend their time looking for the fault in others usually make no time to correction for their own.
I am third and the only girl in the four siblings. Perhaps, it’s one of the reasons why I am comfortable hanging out with males. My three brothers are definitely masculine in all forms of casual interaction. On the contrary, my environment as a PNUan was far different this time. I am teased by my college friends. They used to treat me as one of the boys. Well then, I’m not affected. It’s because I know for a fact I am not. I usually acquaint straight people in our home and believe in religious concepts of morality as well.
But however, I am shocked the moment I found out that there were actually gays who were not obviously expressive with their sexual identities. Considering Ian; an open- minded pal who abruptly confessed to me that he was a bisexual. Who would even thought that his manly acts was opposite to his statement? Same thing with my other companions; Givhart and Christian, as I ended up on questioning their sexuality before. We went through certain arguments regarding with this issue in which they are amiable with the current concept of sexual diversity. Eventually, I realized I was being judgmental. I learned that they still need to come out and just be themselves. What’s wrong with their sexuality by the way? As long as they’re not harming anyone, I assumed they must be loved and accepted the way others would do.
We are taking the leap of progress. Little by little we tend to tolerate the presence of LGBT community over being conservative. I consider it’s more on respecting individual differences and accepting the idea that we can be a solid community that encourages “YES to all Gender”.

In the midst of mind- cracking exams, banning of Flexible Learning activities and even not to mention extravagance, I am still rich.
You know why? It’s merely because I am surrounded by people who truly care. They have strengthened me to be a better version. Truly, I have so much love & support at such a difficult time in my life
