The mug hit the table with a solid thunk as he set it down.

The mug knocked against the table with too much force. His fingers lingered on the handle, nails tapping the porcelain in agitation.
vs.
He thrust the mug at the table blindly, eyes not once leaving theirs as he set it down with a worrying amount of force. They half expected him to knock it over or even throw it at the wall, but he didn鈥檛. He released his white-knuckled grip on the handle deliberately, each finger prying away from the porcelain as if on a spring until only his fingertips trailed along the mug, tapping out his agitation.
vs.
In that moment, it didn鈥檛 matter that it was the only mug he had or that it was a gift from his long-dead grandmother or that they were his friend. Red filled his vision. He thrust the mug away from himself, intent on freeing his hands to fight, or to run, or to yell, and only at the last minute remembered how fragile it must be. The bottom thumped against the table anyway, so loud in the quiet of the room that it felt like a gunshot. He didn鈥檛 so much as twitch. He stared at them as he deliberately released his white-knuckled grip on the dainty porcelain until only his nails remained hovering over it like claws. Tink, tink, tink. His nails tapped out the rhythm of his agitation.
