a feel like the new generation of fanfic readers NEED to understand that clicking on a fic (interaction) does nothing. ao3 has no algorithm. your private discord discussions of fic do not reach the authors. if you do not actively engage with writers they will stop posting. this isn’t social media this is community.

Little blurb I will probably never do anything with under the cut about if Ford ended up chatting with his “mystery caller” :}

“—And, as much as Thompson may think so, he doesn’t know everything! If he weren’t so smug when he gets things right, then maybe I wouldn’t be so smug when I correct him!”

Stanford wasn’t sure when he decided to start talking to his mystery caller. It wasn’t a conscious decision, but with Fiddleford busy visiting family and his classes taking a lull in difficulty, he found himself with an open schedule and nothing to fill it with.

The library was only open for a limited number of hours a day, and after too many late returns, he was no longer allowed to check out more than five books at a time. He could smuggle a few under his shirt, but not nearly as many as he would like.

“Oh, and you’ll never believe what Professor Arthate said today, the man was entirely wrong about something incredibly simple, and when I corrected him he told me he ‘wanted to see me after class’ then he berated me about being rude! Well maybe, Professor Arthate, instead of shouting at me you could pick up your own damn textbook!”

Ford had been getting strange calls for the entire time he had been at Backupsmore University. The first one he had assumed was a misdial, as whoever was on the other end hung up as soon as he said his name. The second and third were also assumed to be misdials, but by the fourth he was getting suspicious. By the fifth he was telling off the caller, shouting at them for pulling such a juvenile prank. The sixth and seventh were much the same.

After that he began asking his mystery caller why, exactly, they were doing this. What could they possibly be getting out of these little pranks?

“Fiddleford is still home, apparently his favorite sow is giving birth and he worked himself into such a fit about it going wrong he nearly tore his hair out. I told him to go home, he’s already ahead in all his classes and his professors understood once he told them it was a family emergency. I don’t think he explained what exactly the emergency was though.”

Eventually, he began ranting about the goings-on at Backupsmore. Though it hadn’t been intentional, somewhere along the line he had gone from reprimanding to chatting.

Then, at one point his mystery caller had laughed, and a lightbulb went off. Maybe if he endeared himself to the caller, eventually they would grow complacent and reveal themselves! It was the perfect plan.

Of course, he didn’t want to talk to his mystery caller. It was purely a tactic to entice them into speaking.

And I have no idea where to go from there lol

What do you write your fics on? I’ve been using google docs, but with all this ai business I’ve been a little antsy about it and I’m curious about what you do.

I write my fics on Google docs too! I totally get the apprehension with Ai and privacy and all that, but like.

Google docs works for me. I like using it, its convenient enough to not warrant my ire. And yeah, theres ai problems with it. But im also typing on a square of machinery that tracks my every move and listens whenever I mention A Product in an effort to sell me more shit. If Google ai wants to comb through the fanfiction I write about a kids show from 2015 then like. Frankly go ahead.

No machine, no matter how much of my work it looks over, will be able to replicate the parts of fanfiction that are important to me. Mainly, how much fun *I* have writing it, and how much joy it brings OTHER people

Like yes, AI is shitty and I hate it. But im not so worried about it that ill inconvenience and downtrod on my own happiness in order to circumvent due to fear.

Maybe its just my nature, ive always been the heaviest rock in the river, in that I like to let shit flow right around and over me, a majority of the time.

So yeah, I use Google docs to type my fics on. Ai could never do what I do, because I do what I do because I ENJOY it. A machine follows orders, I do this shit for the love of the game
