The Nature Fix: Book Review
Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative: Florence Williams
Tumblr media
“Because humans evolved in nature, it’s where we feel most comfortable, even if we don’t always know it.”
This quote resonatesd with me because it captures the essence of our connection to nature. As humans, our evolution traces back to nature, making it our original habitat. Despite the advancements of modern life, there's an innate comfort and familiarity we feel when surrounded by natural environments. Even if we aren't always consciously aware of it, being in nature brings a sense of ease and belonging. This quote reminds me of the peace and tranquility I find when immersing myself in the natural world.
Tumblr media
"The Nature Fix" by Florence Williams doesn't directly challenge the concept of celebrityhood, but it offers a different perspective on what truly matters in life. In a world often dominated by celebrities and fame, the book shifts the focus to something more essential: our connection to nature. Through stories and scientific research, she demonstrates the impact that spending time in nature can have on our well-being. This challenges the notion that only fame and wealth bring happiness and fulfillment.
By focusing on the restorative power of nature, "The Nature Fix" disrupts the narrative of success and achievement associated with celebrityhood. Instead of seeking validation or status through external recognition, the book encourages readers to find contentment in the simplicity of nature. This book helps call for a reevaluation of priorities, suggesting that true fulfillment may lie in experiences that feed the soul rather than in fleeting moments of fame. While fame and fortune may bring temporary satisfaction, the book suggests that a deeper sense of fulfillment can be found in cultivating a deep connection with the natural world.

"The Nature Fix" contributes to social change and activism by raising awareness about the importance of nature for human well-being. The book sheds light on the healing power of nature and its potential to improve mental and physical health. By emphasizing the benefits of spending time in natural environments, it advocates for greater access to green spaces in urban areas, promoting policies that prioritize conservation and sustainability.
“The Nature Fix" inspires activism by highlighting the urgent need to protect natural habitats and combat environmental degradation. It prompts people to take action to preserve and restore ecosystems, advocating for policies that prioritize environmental conservation and address climate change. By creating a deeper appreciation for the natural world, the book encourages individuals to become advocates for environmental and for social change.
Tumblr media
"The Nature Fix" introduced the concept of "nature therapy" to the world, highlighting the therapeutic benefits of spending time in natural environments. This idea suggests that immersing yourseld in nature can improve mental and physical well-being, reduce stress, and enhance cognitive function. As a result, the book has sparked a growing interest in nature-based interventions as a form of preventive healthcare and holistic healing.
The ripple effects of this concept are far-reaching, influencing various things like healthcare, urban planning, and education. There's been an increase in research exploring the effects of nature therapy on human health, leading to the development of nature-based interventions for mental health disorders and stress-related illnesses. In urban areas, city planners are incorporating more green spaces and parks into urban designs to promote community well-being. Educators are recognizing the importance of outdoor education and incorporating nature-based learning experiences into curricula. “The Nature Fix" has helped create a large shift in how society views and values nature, creating a greater appreciation for its role in promoting health and happiness.

We have a lot to learn from trees
In Suzanne Simard's TED Talk, I learned about how trees communicate underground through a network of fungi called mycorrhizae. It amazed me how these connections allow trees to share nutrients, water, and even information. Understanding how forests function as interconnected communities changed my perspective on nature. I enjoyed learning about the complexity of tree relationships and how they support each other, especially in times of stress or competition. Simard's research made me appreciate the importance of biodiversity in forests and the need to preserve these ecosystems. The talk left me with a deeper respect for the intricate web of life in forests and the fascinating ways in which trees communicate and cooperate.
Tumblr media
From trees, we can learn about the power of cooperation and sharing resources for mutual benefit. They teach us patience, as they grow slowly over time, yet create long-lasting impacts. Trees also remind us of the importance of interconnectedness and community support. Their resilience in adapting to changing environments can inspire us to persevere through challenges. Trees demonstrate the value of sustainability and conserving resources for future generations. Observing their ability to thrive in diverse conditions encourages us to embrace diversity and adaptability in our own lives. Overall, trees serve as wise teachers, offering lessons in resilience, cooperation, and harmony with nature.
Tumblr media
Trees have become more prominent in human consciousness because people are realizing their crucial role in the environment. As awareness of climate change grows, trees symbolize hope for a sustainable future, combating deforestation and carbon emissions. In pop culture, shows like Ted Lasso use trees as metaphors for growth, resilience, and community, resonating with audiences seeking uplifting narratives. The calming presence of trees offers comfort in urban landscapes, promoting mental well-being. Overall, trees have entered human consciousness as symbols of environmental interconnectedness and resilience, reflecting our evolving relationship with nature.
Tumblr media
“The forest was like the Internet too—the world wide web. But instead of computers linked by wires or radio waves, these trees were connected by mycorrhizal fungi.”—Suzanne Simard, Finding the Mother Tree
This quote resonates with me because it describes the interconnectedness of nature, mirroring the network of the Internet. It captures the idea that just like how computers communicate through wires or radio waves, trees communicate through their roots and fungal networks. The comparison helps me to understand the forest as a complex web of relationships and interactions. It highlights the importance of understanding and respecting nature's interconnected systems. The quote evokes a sense of wonder at the hidden depths of the world. It encourages me to appreciate the complexity and intelligence of ecosystems and inspires me to learn more about how forests function and the role of symbiotic relationships within them.
Tumblr media
There was a tree in my front yard growing up that was truly a large part of my childhood. My sister and I spent countless afternoons climbing its branches and  playing hide and seek among its leaves with our friends. One of the most magical aspects of that tree was the birds. From our second story window, we had a perfect view of their nests and the stages of their lives. We watched as eggs appeared, hatched into tiny babies, and eventually grew strong enough to take flight. It was incredible to witness this cycle of life unfold right before our eyes. Those experiences had a large impact on me. They connected me to nature in a deeper way. That tree taught me patience and reminded me that there's so much beauty and fascination in the world if we take the time to observe and appreciate it. This tree is a reminder to cherish the small moments and the wonders of the natural world that surround us every day. Even though I've moved away from that house, the memories of that tree will always stay with me.
Tumblr media
During my digital detox experience, I did actually notice a shift in my awareness of trees. Without the constant distraction of my phone, I became more attuned to the world around me. I started to notice the details of trees more like the textures of their bark, the patterns of their leaves, and the sway of their branches in the wind. I was able to allow muself to appreciate the beauty and presence of trees the way I had as a child. Spending time outdoors and away from digital devices heightened my senses and brought a sense of calm. I found myself drawn to the peacefulness. This experience deepened my connection with nature again and reinforced the importance of unplugging from technology to truly immerse oneself in the simple yet amazing wonders of the natural world.

Street Art
Location
14th Street and 3rd Avenue
Description
A mural of a dinosaur located above a taco bell. After attempting to do more research on this mural, I believe in this location that is now a taco bell was once a well known, family owned, furniture store. I believe this mural was painted during the time of their closing relating to them going out of business (extinct).
What inspired you to take this photo?
The beautiful details of this mural as well as its unique location inspired me to photograph it.
Have you been tracking this particular artist, or are they completely anonymous and a new discovery for you?
I tried to find out who the artist was but I was unable to find any information on them.
How do these 'dialogues in the margins' influence public discourse?
I believe this mural serves as a visual commentary on the decline of local businesses and the impact of economic changes. By depicting extinction (related to the store's closure) in a public space, this artwork prompts discussions about broader issues like economic shifts, corporate dominance, and the importance of supporting local businesses. Such dialogues in unexpected places like murals can bring attention to overlooked topics and spark conversations.
Tumblr media
Location
13th street and 5th avenue
Description
A very large planting pot once nearly empty besides for some twigs that rarely grow anything on them. Now, is full of artificial life. Artwork fills this pot now with yarn wrapping around the formerly dead twigs and a clover field in the middle. There are also colorful (faux) birds enjoying this space.
What inspired you to take this photo?
This was recently placed in this pot and I often pass by it and stop and stare. It os a nice sight to see in this place where people used to rudely toss their trash. Now we can enjoy the lively colors that should have been.
Have you been tracking this particular artist, or are they completely anonymous and a new discovery for you?
I assume the artist of this work is someone from Parsons as it is outside of the school but I could not locate the artist.
How do these 'dialogues in the margins' influence public discourse?
The transformation of this neglected planting pot into a lively art installation is a revitalization of a once overlooked space that can now spark conversations about urban renewal and community engagement. By repurposing discarded objects into a visually appealing and interactive display, this artwork challenges sustainabilit and the value of creativity in public spaces.

What inspired you to take this photo?
This along with the previous pot was recently placed and I often pass by it and stop and stare. It's a nice sight to see in this place where people used to rudely toss their trash. Now we can enjoy the lively colors that should have been.
Have you been tracking this particular artist, or are they completely anonymous and a new discovery for you?
I am intrigued by who did these works and curious as to if the same person did both. Though I have yet to find the answer.
How do these 'dialogues in the margins' influence public discourse?
Similarly to the last, the transformation of this neglected planting pot into a lively art installation is a revitalization of a once overlooked space that can now spark conversations about urban renewal and community engagement. By repurposing discarded objects into a visually appealing and interactive display, this artwork challenges sustainabilit and the value of creativity in public spaces.

Graffiti tagging off of the Manhattan Bridge arch stating “orgy at the port authority”
What inspired you to take this photo?
I noticed this grafitti right away and had to take a picture. I am not opposed to graffiti, there are times I think it can add to a place by being unique and interesting and drawing people in. Other times I see it as defacing property and this is one of those times, probaby because of its inappropriate nature near so many children’s schools.
Have you been tracking this particular artist, or are they completely anonymous and a new discovery for you?
After looking into this further I realized that someone who goes by the handle @suckybat tags many places with this along with his bat tag. He keeps his identity unknown.
How do these 'dialogues in the margins' influence public discourse?
He wants to affect the public by talking about learning things the hard way, and sobriety through his graffiti, he demonstrates feeding demons and making bad decisions.
Tumblr media
Location
Grand and Ludlow
Description
A long time vacant building covered in graffiti and murals. What stands out most is the mural of Bayard Rustin.
What inspired you to take this photo?
I was fascinated by this beautiful artwork. I saw this portrait from across the street and I was encouraged to come up closer and learn more.
Have you been tracking this particular artist, or are they completely anonymous and a new discovery for you?
This artist is a new discovery for me, though I learned he is not a new discovery for many people. He is actually pretty well known Italian street artists and paints a large variety of photorealistic portraits. He has gained international recognition for his portraits on people who have made significant social or political impacts.
How do these 'dialogues in the margins' influence public discourse?
This mural could influence public discourse by highlighting his contributions to civil rights and social justice. Rustin was a key figure in the civil rights movement and advocated for nonviolent protest, organizing the March on Washington in 1963. His presence in the mural could spark conversations about the importance of marginalized voices in shaping public discourse and inspire dialogue about the ongoing struggle for equality and justice.

Description
A defaced truck covered in various tags from various people.
What inspired you to take this photo?
This drew me in as I’m curious as to how long this truck must’ve been sitting to be tagged this many times. I’m also curious as to how the owner feels about this if this truck is still in use.
Have you been tracking this particular artist, or are they completely anonymous and a new discovery for you?
There are various artists who put their tags here. The one that says Skip2 appears to be a singer under the name “skip2fame” that I hadn’t heard of prior. Though the other two I was unable to decipher.
How do these 'dialogues in the margins' influence public discourse?
I don’t think they necessarily affect public discourse rather they’re just putting their names out there.
Tumblr media
Have you ever posted graffiti art or created a sign for a street protest?
I have never posted graffiti but I have once created a sign for the black lives matter protests in 2020. Unfortunately I do not have photos from that moment.

Unfortunately, fast fashion lures me in with its cheap prices and trendy styles, making it hard to resist. I often find myself buying clothes I don't really need because they seem like a good deal and I love instant gratification. However, these clothes wear out quickly, forcing me to buy more, contributing to waste. Knowing that fast fashion's rapid production cycle often means poor working conditions for garment workers, this highly conflicts with my values. Despite my disappointment in the industry, I sometimes succumb to its appeal due to convenience and affordability. NYC thrift shops often price gouge by labeling things as “vintage” making shopping there more expensive than new clothes. This cycle leaves me feeling guilty about my consumption habits and their impact on the environment and people. It's a constant struggle between my desire for new clothes and my concerns about the consequences of supporting fast fashion. In the end, I'm left grappling with the ethical dilemma of balancing my personal desires with broader societal and environmental concerns.

Jessica Alba's The Honest Company is committed to sustainability with it’s wide range of eco-friendly household items. They offer products such as diapers, cleaning supplies, and baby care items, all made with sustainable materials and processes. The Honest Company prioritizes transparency in its supply chain, providing detailed information about sourcing and manufacturing practices to consumers. The brand has earned various certifications, such as B Corporation certification, which highlights its dedication to social and environmental responsibility. By offering accessible and sustainable alternatives to everyday essentials, The Honest Company empowers consumers to make eco-conscious choices in their daily lives.
Tumblr media
Kim Kardashian's SKIMS brand has been accused of greenwashing due to its marketing strategies. While the brand emphasizes sustainability in its messaging, there is a lack of clear evidence of concrete actions being taken to address environmental concerns. Some critics argue that the brand's focus on sustainability may be more about capitalizing on consumer trends rather than making genuine efforts to reduce environmental impact.
It's crucial for consumers to conduct thorough research when evaluating the sustainability claims of celebrity brands. By scrutinizing their practices and seeking transparency, consumers can make more informed choices and support brands that demonstrate genuine commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Tumblr media
I'm fascinated by the potential of bio-textiles like lab-grown spider silk made by companies such as Spiber. It's incredible to think that we can produce natural substances in a lab, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional textile manufacturing. Lab-grown spider silk, with its strength and durability, presents a promising option for eco-conscious consumers like myself. I appreciate that these bio-textiles address environmental and ethical concerns associated with conventional materials. Seeing collaborations with renowned brands like The North Face using these innovative textiles is inspiring, showing that sustainable fashion is becoming more mainstream. Yet, I understand there are challenges to overcome in terms of scaling up production and cost-effectiveness. I believe continued research and investment in bio-textiles are crucial for creating a more sustainable future for fashion and beyond.
Tumblr media
As someone with a growing concern about the environmental impact of fashion, I resonate with several facts highlighted here. Firstly, the staggering statistic that by 2030, fashion waste could reach 148 million tons is alarming. It reinforces my commitment to reducing my own contribution to this waste by being mindful of my purchases and opting for quality over quantity. Additionally, the fact that just one cotton t-shirt can require 3,000 liters of water to produce serves as a reminder of the water footprint embedded in our clothing choices. To mitigate this, I want to do my best to actively seek out clothing made from sustainable materials, which conserve resources and reduce waste. Finally, I'm inspired by the rise of sustainable fashion brands mentioned, and I want to make a conscious effort to support them whenever possible, prioritizing companies that align with my values of environmentally friendly and ethical production practices.

One thing I am always able to find at the thrift store is jackets. I am very excessive but I love having one to match every outfit I have. In order to avoid spending hundreds of dollars buying winter jackets I Instead every summer go to the thrift store and b line to the winter section. In the summer coats are less desired so hence less expensive and also there are better quality, more long lasting, options. I also love how books look on display, especially vintage books. I often go to the thrift store in search of aesthetically pleasing or vintage books as they are sold for a good price.
Here are some thrift trips I found in my camera roll.

Digital Detox & Book Review
DIGITAL DETOX Experiment:
As I walked along the familiar streets, I noticed intricate details in the architecture of houses, vibrant colors in the flowers blooming in gardens that I hadn’t seen in the past. Without the distraction of notifications and updates, my senses felt heightened, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the sights, sounds, and smells of my surroundings. I felt the gentle breeze rustling through the leaves of trees, heard the sounds of children laughing and enjoyed the sights of dogs getting their morning walk. SImple things that I had previously overlooked in my rush to stay connected online.
The experience provided me with a sense of peace as I noticed beauty that exists in the simple moments of everyday life. I felt more connected to nature and a deeper appreciation for the beauty that surrounds me in that hour. This experiment reminded  me of the importance of slowing down, disconnecting from technology, and embracing the present moment. I returned home feeling refreshed  and eager to incorporate more moments of digital detox into my daily routine. The hand-drawn map I created serves as a visual reminder of the insights gained during my hour-long experience of unplugging and reconnecting with the world around me.

2. What is your favorite quote from the book and why do you find it meaningful?
"If something is boring after two minutes, try it for four. If still boring, then eight. Then sixteen. Then thirty-two. Eventually one discovers that it is not boring at all."
In Jenny Odell's "How to Do Nothing," this quote holds particular significance as it aligns with the book's main theme of attention, presence, and reclaiming our time from the distractions of modern life. It is as a reminder to resist the impulse to constantly seek new  stimulation, and instead, to embrace moments of stillness and quiet contemplation.
This quote resonates with me because it speaks to the power of patience and persistence in finding value and meaning in seemingly mundane experiences. It reminds me to approach life with an open mind and a willingness to engage fully, even when something appears uninteresting at first glance. This mindset encourages me to cultivate curiosity and exploration in all aspects of my life, leading to richer and more fulfilling experiences.
Tumblr media
3. Why do you think this book, released by indie publishing house Melville Press, became an unexpected bestseller during the height of the Covid19 pandemic? Her book was so successful, she recently released a second title, Saving Time: Discovering a Life Beyond the Clock.
Jenny Odell's book "How to Do Nothing" gained unexpected popularity during the Covid-19 pandemic for, I assume, several reasons. Many people found themselves thrown into a new reality of social distancing and isolation due to lockdowns and restrictions. Odell's book was able to offer an exploration of the value of slowing down, disconnecting from constant productivity, and finding fulfillment in the present moment, resonating deeply with those seeking meaning in uncertain times.
The pandemic also prompted a collective reevaluation of priorities and lifestyles. Odell's insights on reclaiming attention, resisting the pressures of capitalist productivity, and reestablishing connections with nature definitely struck a chord with people admist the chaos that was the pandemic. We were all looking for an out from pandemic-related news and the pressures of remote work. "How to Do Nothing" provided a compelling invitation to cultivate presence and engagement with the world around them, needed then more than ever. No wonder this book was an unexpected bestseller.
Tumblr media
4. How does the attention economy benefit from our social media activity and media streaming consumption?
The attention economy thrives on our social media activity and media streaming consumption by capitalizing on our time and focus. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter encourage us to constantly engage with their content, keeping us scrolling and clicking to see more ads and sponsored posts. They use algorithms that track our behavior, preferences, and interactions to tailor content that grabs our attention and keeps us hooked. Likewise, media streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube offer endless options for entertainment, enticing us to binge-watch shows and videos for hours on end. These platforms rely on our prolonged engagement to gather data about our viewing habits and preferences, which they then use to target us with personalized advertisements. Ultimately, our social media activity and media consumption become commodities that companies exploit for profit, shaping our online experiences and influencing our behaviors without us even realizing it.
Tumblr media
5. How does this book relate to the topic of celebrity culture?
"How to Do Nothing" touches upon celebrity culture by critiquing the pervasive influence it holds in our society. She examines how celebrity figures often dominate our attention and shape our aspirations, contributing to a culture of comparison and superficiality. Odell argues that the constant pursuit of fame and validation perpetuated by celebrity culture distracts us from meaningful engagement with our surroundings and personal growth. She highlights how social media amplifies this obsession with celebrity, as platforms become arenas for constructing and maintaining public personas.
Odell suggests that by disengaging from the relentless cycle of idolizing and emulating celebrities, individuals can reclaim agency over their own lives and focus on what truly matters to them. She advocates for redirecting attention towards local communities, personal relationships, and the natural world, rather than fixating on the manufactured images and narratives propagated by celebrity culture. Ultimately, Odell's book challenges readers tocreate more authentic connections and experiences in their everyday lives.
Tumblr media
6. Do you take digital detox breaks regularly? If yes, describe them. Were they more challenging during the quarantine era? Why?
No honestly, I do not take digital detox breaks unless I am at work where I am not allowed to have my phone on the floor. During quarantine my screen time increased by a landslide. With limited opportunities for activities and social interactions, I found myself turning to my devices more frequently for entertainment and connection. The constant stream of news updates and social media content became almost addictive, making it difficult to disconnect and take breaks. As a result, my screen time skyrocketed, and I struggled to find a healthy balance between online and offline activities. However, I'm aware of the importance of disconnecting periodically to maintain my mental well-being, and I'm actively working on finding strategies to incorporate more offline time into my daily routine.
Tumblr media
7. Do you sleep with your phone or computer? Are you aware of the impacts on your sleep cycles and relaxation caused by 24/7 proximity? Have you experimented with leaving digital devices in a drawer or another room?
Unfortunately yes I do sleep  with my phone. I like to have it close as not only is it my alarm clock but it is also what I need on hand to be able to pick up last minute shifts for work. Though I do make the mistake of also starting my morning with scrolling through social media. The constant proximity to digital devices does disrupt my sleep cycles, making it harder for me to unwind and fall asleep peacefully. I've tried leaving my phone in another room or on my desk before bedtime, but I often feel anxious about missing important notifications or calls. Finding a balance between staying connected and prioritizing rest is something I'm actively working on to promote better sleep habits.
Tumblr media
8. What does Odell mean by 'doing nothing?' Are we capable of doing nothing?
When Jenny Odell speaks of "doing nothing," she's not talking about literal inactivity but rather a shift in focus towards activities that are less about productivity and more about personal fulfillment and connection. She suggests that in our hyperconnected world, where productivity is often equated with worth, it's essential to reclaim time for activities that nourish our souls and foster genuine engagement with our surroundings.
"Doing nothing" doesn't mean idleness but instead engaging in activities that allow for reflection, creativity, and meaningful connection with others and the environment. These activities could include taking leisurely walks, spending time in nature, or engaging in hobbies that bring joy without the pressure of productivity. Meaning, we are most definitely capable of doing nothing.
Tumblr media
9. What is the role of nature in Odell's book, in particular the role of birds? (P.S. Did you know that birdwatching became a HUGE pastime in the Covid era?)
Nature plays a significant role in Jenny Odell's book, serving as a basis for reflection and connection with the world beyond screens. She emphasizes the importance of observing and appreciating the natural environment, using it as a means to detach from the demands of the digital world and reconnect with the present moment. Birds, in particular, symbolize freedom, resilience, and the beauty of the natural world throughout her narrative, serving as reminders to slow down, observe, and appreciate the wonders of nature. Their presence in the book underscores the importance of reestablishing our relationship with the environment and finding solace and inspiration in its simplicity and beauty.
I remember seeing bird watching gain traction on TikTok during the Covid era as people sought new outdoor hobbies while staying socially distanced. People would share captivating videos of bird sightings, identification tips, and peaceful moments in nature, inspiring others to take up the activity.

"Blackfish" explores the important social issue of animal welfare and captivity in the context of orcas, specifically focusing on Tilikum, a captive killer whale involved in several fatal incidents. The documentary raises the question of whether it is ethical to keep orcas in captivity for entertainment purposes, particularly in theme parks like SeaWorld. Through interviews with former trainers, marine biologists, and footage of orcas in captivity, "Blackfish" challenges the traditional narrative of these animals as performers and truly shows the psychological and physical toll of confinement on orcas. It delves into the consequences of separating orcas from their natural habitats and families, shedding light on the complex emotional lives of these intelligent creatures.
In terms of storytelling, "Blackfish" employs a combination of narrative techniques to convey its message effectively. The documentary uses personal testimonies from individuals directly involved with orcas, such as former trainers, who provide firsthand accounts of their experiences working with these animals. Archival footage and reenactments are also shown to illustrate key events and to immerse viewers in the world of orcas in captivity. Through a compelling and emotional narrative, "Blackfish" aims to evoke empathy and provoke thought about the ethical implications of keeping animals in captivity for human entertainment. The documentary encourages viewers to reconsider their perceptions of marine parks and the treatment of captive animals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Blackfish" has had a significant impact on public discussions surrounding the captive marine mammal industry. Since its release, the documentary has prompted people to question the ethics of keeping orcas and other marine mammals in captivity for entertainment purposes. This increased scrutiny has led to widespread awareness about animal welfare issues and has encouraged activism aimed at improving conditions for captive marine animals. The revelations presented in "Blackfish" have resonated with audiences worldwide, sparking debates about the treatment of animals in theme parks and aquariums.
The documentary's influence extends beyond public discourse and has led to legislative action. In response to the concerns raised by "Blackfish," several jurisdictions have implemented regulations to safeguard the welfare of orcas and other marine mammals in captivity. Some places have even gone so far as to ban the keeping of orcas for entertainment entirely. "Blackfish" has also prompted SeaWorld, one of the largest marine park operators, to reevaluate its practices. The decision to end the orca breeding program and phase out theatrical shows featuring orcas reflects a broader shift in societal attitudes towards the treatment of animals in captivity. As a result, the impact of "Blackfish" reaches beyond the realm of entertainment to influence policy changes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Blackfish" left me both shocked and inspired. The shocking treatment of orcas in captivity, especially the emotional and physical toll on these intelligent creatures, deeply affected me. Learning about the incidents involving Tilikum and the consequences of keeping orcas in theme parks challenged my previous perceptions of marine mammal entertainment. This film made me realize the importance of questioning established norms and advocating for change in industries that exploit animals for profit. Ultimately, "Blackfish" has changed my perspective on the subject by highlighting the inherent cruelty of keeping orcas in captivity and has created a greater sense of empathy towards these magnificent creatures.
Tumblr media
"Blackfish" expanded the reputation of the subject by bringing widespread attention to the treatment of orcas and marine mammals in captivity. Prior to the documentary's release, the topic of captive marine animals was not widely discussed in mainstream media. However, "Blackfish" sparked global interest and controversy, reaching audiences worldwide through its compelling storytelling and impactful revelations. The film shed light on the harsh realities faced by orcas in theme parks like SeaWorld, challenging the perception of marine mammal entertainment. Through its powerful narrative, "Blackfish" elevated the subject to the forefront of public consciousness, prompting widespread discourse and scrutiny of the captive marine mammal industry.
In addition to expanding the subject's reputation, "Blackfish" served to further the spotlight on a key social change issue surrounding animal welfare. By exposing the mistreatment of orcas in captivity and the ethical implications of marine mammal entertainment, the documentary brought about a broader conversation about the treatment of animals in captivity. It prompted increased awareness, activism, and legislative efforts aimed at improving conditions for captive marine mammals and ultimately ending their use for entertainment purposes. "Blackfish" played an important role in gaining public support for social change, inspiring individuals and organizations to advocate for the rights and welfare of animals. As a result, the documentary contributed to a growing movement towards a more compassionate and ethical treatment of marine life in captivity.

The uncomfortable Truth about Elvis and Priscilla's "relationship"
The film “Priscilla” shows the unseen side of the relationship between a man and a child. Elvis Presley met Priscilla (Wagner) when she was just 14 and he was 24 at a house party. He hit it off with her immediately as they were able to connect about being homesick from the states due to the army. They quickly begin to spend time together one on one and their relationship develops. He begins to shape her into exactly what he feels he needs for himself, taking away her youth only to live in his shadows. She falls deeply in love with him and rearranges her life for him, moving into his home away from her family and friends. She no longer can live a life of her own as she has to be the sole caretaker of Elvis’s mental wellbeing. He does not show her desire unless it is in front of the cameras and refuses sex with her as he thinks her young body is sacred though he sleeps with other women on his tours. She then has a child by him earlier than she is ready for and he uses that to take away the rest of her freedoms. He can do whatever he wants while she must get approval from him on what clothes she can wear and how she should act. She spends all of her time waiting on when he needs her as she is not allowed to do anything else. The film ends with Priscilla deciding enough is enough and leaving Elvis to finally live a life of her own.
Tumblr media
This film was not nominated for any significant awards and did not break any records which I thought was shocking and apparently Entertainment Weekly thought the same “It could be that the Academy still refuses to accept women’s stories that are complex but not bathed in violence.” They go on to say, “In the past 10 years, women’s biopics concentrate on their accomplishments…. Being married to Elvis apparently does not fit into any of these categories, and that’s a shame as it probably is one of the best films to explore grooming and emotional abuse without casting judgment.” I believe this movie deserved the attention because it delved into the complexities of Priscilla's life beyond just being Elvis's wife. It offered a nuanced portrayal of her experiences, shedding light on the grooming and emotional abuse she endured. "Priscilla" provided a valuable perspective on relationships and power dynamics, showing the importance of recognizing and understanding such issues. On top of all of that, the performances and storytelling in the film were incredibly compelling, making it deserving of recognition.
Tumblr media
This particular biopic provides new perspectives on this subject for me atleast. I remember hearing in the past that there was a large age gap in Priscilla and Elvis' relationship but I never knew how young she actually was and how dark the situation truly was. I now know that there is a book that this movie is based off of that goes much more in depth on the details of their abusive relationship. Though I feel seeing this relationship play out physically helps you understand the severity and the emotions that were in play.
The performances of the actors in "Priscilla" was necessary to its success in providing these new perspectives. The cast is able to capture the emotional depth and complexity of the characters, bringing authenticity to the portrayal of Priscilla and Elvis's relationship. The actors' nuanced performances allow us to empathize with Priscilla's experiences and journey, making her story all the more impactful. By humanizing the characters and presenting their struggles with empathy and sensitivity, the actors elevate the biopic beyond a retelling of events, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
Tumblr media
This film resonates with the current moment by shedding light on issues such as grooming, emotional abuse, and power dynamics within relationships. In today's society, there is an increasing awareness of the prevalence of such behaviors and their effects, making "Priscilla" a timeless exploration of these themes. Priscilla's experiences serve as a cautionary tale, showing the importance of recognizing and addressing signs of manipulation and control in relationships.
One example from the film is the depiction of Priscilla's initial infatuation with Elvis that he takes advantage of, which gradually evolves into a more manipulative and controlling dynamic. He makes her feel like she is the only one who would understand what he is going through. She would feel horrible leaving him to go through anything “alone” because he tells her she is the only one he can talk to and that she has to have all her time available for him. This power dynamic is further emphasized by Elvis's status as a cultural icon and Priscilla's position as a young woman thrown into the spotlight. His fame not only increases the power difference between them but also adds to a sense of isolation for Priscilla, making it challenging for her to assert her own agency within their relationship. This portrayal helps us think of broader societal issues regarding the idolization of celebrities and the tendency to overlook problematic behavior in the name of fame and adoration.
Through this lens, "Priscilla" is a reminder of the importance of recognizing and challenging power imbalances in all forms of relationships, regardless of external factors. "Priscilla" prompts us to pay attention to the signs of manipulation and abuse in our own relationships, broadening the conversation about power dynamics and consent.
Tumblr media
The Bechdel Test assesses whether a work features at least two women who talk to each other about something other than a man. In the case of the film "Priscilla," while it features Priscilla Presley as the central character, the majority of her interactions revolve around Elvis Presley or other male characters like his friends and family. Therefore, "Priscilla" likely does not pass the Bechdel Test as it doesn't feature substantial conversations between female characters about topics unrelated to men.
Tumblr media
The screenplay's originality and authorship in "Priscilla" are noteworthy as it is based on real events and draws inspiration from Priscilla Presley's own experiences. While it may not be entirely original in terms of narrative invention, the film's strengths are in its interpretation and presentation of the story. By drawing from Priscilla's perspective, the screenplay offers a fresh take on the iconic couple's relationship, delving into the complexities of their marriage. We get to be a fly on the wall within their relationship and see that it is not the surface-level glamor often associated with Elvis Presley.
The decision to adapt the screenplay from Priscilla Presley's book or real-life events adds authenticity and depth to the narrative. By creating the story from personal accounts, the film succeeds in providing a more insightful portrayal of Priscilla and Elvis's relationship. Through its interpretation of real-life events, "Priscilla" not only elevates the narrative but also offers audiences a deeper understanding of the complexities of fame, power dynamics, and emotional abuse within celebrity relationships.

Week 6
1. Who is Leah Thomas and what happened at COP26?
Leah Thomas is a well-known environmentalist, activist and writer who believes in making environmental efforts inclusive and fair for everyone .She gained prominence for her work in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the environmental movement, emphasizing the connections between social justice and environmental issues. Stressing that climate solutions must consider everyone, especially those who are most affected like marginalized groups, Indigenous peoples and people of color, who often suffer the most from climate change.
COP26 was the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, Leah Thomas was there advocating for more inclusive and equitable climate action. She highlighted the importance of centering marginalized communities in climate solutions, acknowledging their disproportionate vulnerability to the impacts of climate change. She emphasized the need for climate policies and initiatives that address systemic inequalities and prioritize the voices of these Indigenous peoples, people of color, and other marginalized groups. Her presence at COP26 showed that more people are realizing the importance of including everyone in the fight against climate change. She talked about how we need to address both environmental issues and social inequalities together. By doing this, we can create fairer and more effective climate policies that work for everyone.
Tumblr media
2. What is Intersectional Environmentalism and how does it relate to Black Lives Matter
Intersectional environmentalism is a way of approaching environmental issues that considers how they intersect with other forms of oppression, such as racism, sexism, and classism. It recognizes that people experience environmental problems differently depending on their race, gender, socioeconomic status, and other factors. For example, communities of color may face greater exposure to pollution and environmental hazards due to discriminatory policies and practices.
Black Lives Matter, a movement advocating for racial justice and equality, relates with intersectional environmentalism because both movements recognize the interconnectedness of social and environmental issues. Black Lives Matter highlights the systemic racism that affects many aspects of society, including environmental policies and practices. Intersectional environmentalism acknowledges that environmental injustice disproportionately affects marginalized communities, including Black communities, and seeks to address these disparities by centering the voices and experiences of those most affected. Black Lives Matter and intersectional environmentalism share the goal of creating a more just and equitable society where everyone, regardless of their race or background, can succeed in a safe and healthy environment.

3. Who is Leah Penniman? What is Soul Fire Farm and why is it important to the climate movement
Leah Penniman is an activist, farmer, and writer known for her work in promoting food justice and racial equity. She co-founded Soul Fire Farm, a community farm dedicated to ending racism and injustice in the food system with her sister Naima who I wrote about last week! Soul Fire Farm provides training, resources, and support to marginalized communities, particularly Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), to reclaim their connection to the land, grow healthy food, and advocate for sustainable farming practices.
Soul Fire Farm is important to the climate movement because it addresses environmental and social issues simultaneously. By promoting sustainable agriculture and regenerative farming techniques, Soul Fire Farm helps mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting biodiversity as well as focusing on racial equity and food justice to address systemic inequalities that disproportionately harm BIPOC communities, in turn creating a more inclusive and resilient approach to climate action. Through its programs and advocacy, Soul Fire Farm demonstrates how addressing racial injustice and environmental degradation are interconnected and essential for building a more sustainable and equitable future.

4. Explore "Black Forager" aka Alexis Nikole on TikTok: choose a favorite post and if possible, try the recipe! What is your experience of her content and what important issues does she raise? What is the key to her incredible following (4.4 million on TikTok, 1.7 million on Instagram and counting...)
"Black Forager," also known as Alexis Nikole on TikTok, has gained significant popularity for her content centered around foraging, wild food identification, and sustainable living practices. She educates her audience about the abundance of edible plants found in nature, particularly in urban environments, and shares tips on how to ethically and safely gather them. My favorite post of hers that I found was her extracting syrup from a maple tree! She really showcases how much the world has to offer us and how foraging is not nearly as intense or difficult as any of us may have previously thought.
One of the key issues she raises is the importance of reconnecting with nature and understanding the natural resources available to us, especially in marginalized communities. Nikole's content highlights the historical and cultural significance of foraging, particularly within Black and Indigenous communities, while also emphasizing the environmental benefits of sustainable foraging practices. The key to her large following likely has to do with how unique her content niche is, her engaging presentation style, and her ability to mix education with entertainment. Nikole's funny and welcoming demeanor, combined with her passion for environmentalism and social justice, resonates with a wide audience on these social media platforms.

5. How do you define food sovereignty in your own life? Do you grow your own food? Do you forage? Compost? Did the pandemic change your food habits? How do you connect to the 'black gold' of soil? Have you ever volunteered at a community garden?
I feel as for the most part I have access to healthy and sustainable food options at a reasonable price in my local community though I do not have access to free food through growth and foraging. I do not currently grow my own food as I have a fear of cockroaches but it is something I dream of doing one day when I have my own home and garden. I also do not forage considering my current location is within the concrete jungle but I definitely want to try to in the future. The pandemic changed my food habits by giving me a lot more time but a lot less time doing activities or going to the grocery store so I spent a lot of time at home overeating unhealthy options while binge watching tv. After the pandemic started to recover though is actually when I got into plants and found my love for nature and now I try to bring the outdoors in with the excessive amount of house plants I have in my apartment. I have not yet volunteered at a community garden but it is something I am currently looking into.

All We Can Save
Review
Tumblr media
"All We Can Save," edited by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Katharine K. Wilkinson, is an influential and informative anthology that brings together a diverse collection of essays, poetry, and artwork from women deeply engaged with environmental issues. Structured around themes of reckoning, resilience, reimagination, and regeneration, the anthology highlights the many approaches to addressing environmental challenges.
A central aspect of the book is its emphasis on the power of women's voices and leadership within the environmental movement. By centering the perspectives of women, the anthology underscores the unique insights and contributions they bring, while also acknowledging the disproportionate impact of environmental degradation on marginalized communities. This emphasis serves to inspire readers with stories of resilience and innovative solutions.
"All We Can Save" encourages a sense of hope and agency in its readers. Despite the overwhelming realities of climate change, the anthology presents a diverse range of approaches and solutions pursued by women worldwide. Through stories of activism, community organizing, scientific research, and creative expression, the book demonstrates that meaningful change is indeed possible when individuals come together to tackle shared challenges.
The Green New Deal, as outlined within the anthology on page 94, offers a vision of hope and possibility. By addressing the urgent climate crisis and systemic injustices, it aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, create high-wage jobs, invest in sustainable infrastructure, and promote justice and equity. This comprehensive plan inspires hope by prioritizing justice, equity, and sustainability in shaping a more inclusive and resilient future.
“A. to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions through a fair and just transition for all communities and workers;
B. to create millions of good, high-wage jobs and ensure prosperity and economic security for all people of the United States;
C. to invest in the infrastructure and industry of the United States to sustainably meet the challenges of the 21st century;
D. to secure clean air and water, climate and community resiliency, healthy food, access to nature, and a sustainable environment;
E. to promote justice and equity by stopping current, preventing future, and repairing historic oppression of frontline and vulnerable communities, including Indigenous peoples, communities of color, migrant communities, deindustrialized communities, depopulated rural communities, the poor, low-income workers, women, the elderly, the unhoused, people with disabilities, and youth.”
The Green New Deal seeks to create a sustainable environment that benefits all communities. This included excerpt inspires hope because it offers a bold and comprehensive plan to address the interconnected challenges facing our society, while prioritizing justice, equity, and sustainability.
The anthology's inclusion of various formats of self-expression, such as poetry, artwork, and personal narratives, further enriches the reading experience. By capturing a diverse range of perspectives and emotions, these formats evoke a deeper connection and engagement with the material, making the book accessible to a broader audience. Additionally, the creativity showcased within the anthology inspires readers to think innovatively about solutions to environmental problems.
Within this rich tapestry of voices and expressions, one piece that particularly resonates is "Being Human" by Naima Penniman, found on pages 266-268. This powerful and deeply moving poem reflects on our connection to the natural world and the importance of empathy, compassion, and resilience. Penniman explores themes of interconnectedness, love, and shared experiences, emphasizing our capacity for growth and transformation, even in the face of adversity. As readers engage with the poem's evocative imagery and profound insights, they are encouraged to embrace their humanity and recognize the beauty and strength that lies within each of us.
“I wonder if waves get discouraged
crawling up the sand
only to be pulled back again
to where they began
If land feels stepped upon
if sand feels insignificant
if trees need to question their lovers
to know where they stand”
The anthology's adoption of an intersectional approach underscores the interconnectedness of environmental issues with broader social justice concerns, emphasizing the importance of building a more inclusive and equitable environmental movement. This emphasis on collaboration and community-building highlights the transformative power of collective action in addressing environmental challenges effectively. Through stories of unity and shared purpose, "All We Can Save" inspires readers to engage with others in their communities and work towards common goals of environmental stewardship and sustainability.
Within this narrative of collective action and inclusivity, "Calling All Grand Mothers" by Alice Walker emerges as a call to reclaim ancestral wisdom and nurture the next generation. Walker's poem celebrates the wisdom, strength, and resilience embodied by grandmothers, urging them to share their knowledge and experiences for the betterment of future generations and the world at large. As Walker calls upon grandmothers and all who embody the spirit of respect for life and protection of the young to rise and lead, she underscores the critical role of intergenerational connections in fostering healing and transformation. In this way, the poem serves as a powerful testament to the interconnectedness of past, present, and future, echoing the themes of collaboration and unity championed throughout "All We Can Save."
“I call on all the
Grand Mothers
of Earth
& every person
who possesses
the Grand Mother spirit
of respect for
life
&
protection of
the young
to rise
& lead.
The life of
our species
depends
on it.”
Ultimately, "All We Can Save" provides not only concrete solutions but also a sense of hope and inspiration in the face of environmental crises. In these times, where the urgency of action is paramount, hope and solutions serve as crucial motivators for driving positive change and building a more sustainable and equitable future. Through its diverse voices, creative expressions, and emphasis on collaboration, the anthology offers a compelling vision for collective action and resilience in the fight against climate change.

Empathy in Leadership
1. What is Jacinda Ardern's legacy and impact as a compassionate leader?
Jacinda Ardern's legacy as a compassionate leader comes from how empathetic she is, especially shown in her responses to crises and how she advocates for progressive policies. After the Christchurch mosque shootings of New Zealand in 2019, she had a quick response for supporting the affected communities and was able to show her compassion. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, she made a visible effort to protect public health while maintaining open communication with the public, displaying how she prioritizes the well-being of New Zealanders. Jacinda Arden is defined by her ability to inspire hope, foster unity, and prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable in society.
2. How would you define compassionate leadership? Can power and empathy coexist?
I would define compassionate leadership as someone who is understanding, empathetic, and concerned for the well-being of others. It involves actively listening to the needs and perspectives of people, showing genuine care and support. Power and empathy can coexist in leadership. While power provides the ability to make decisions and influence others, empathy allows leaders to connect with people on a human level, understanding their emotions, experiences, and needs. Combining power with empathy enables leaders to make more informed and considerate decisions, leading to a positive impact on both.
3. Does the world need more female leaders? How could this change the world?
Yes, the world needs more female leaders. Increasing the representation of women in leadership positions brings diverse perspectives and experiences to decision-making processes. Female leaders often prioritize issues such as gender equality, healthcare, and education, which can lead to more equitable and inclusive policies and practices. Having more women in leadership roles serves as a powerful example for future generations, inspiring young girls to pursue their ambitions and break down traditional gender stereotypes. Ultimately, gender-balanced leadership promotes greater social unity and understanding.
4. Choose a leader from this list, provide a photo, a key quote, and a paragraph about how their empathetic and selfless actions have helped to redefine power and compassion and contributed to significant global impact.
•Michelle Obama, United States First Lady, 2008-2016
"You may not always have a comfortable life and you will not always be able to solve all of the world's problems at once, but don't ever underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own."
Tumblr media
Michelle Obama's empathetic and selfless actions have redefined power and compassion by serving as a role model for leadership grounded in empathy and service. Her commitment to encouraging inclusivity and equality has sparked conversations and actions on a global scale, starting movements for social change and progress. Michelle Obama embodies empathy and selflessness in her actions and words and has left a lasting legacy that continues to shape perceptions of power in leadership.
