the bisexuality was there. it didnt change anything. it didn't save anyone. there were just too many forces against it. but it still matters that the bisexuality was there

i'm always gazing into the distance thinking about city elves bc, despite bioware forgetting them entirely, there's stuff like this dagger from the tabris origin in dao:
Tumblr media
elves are not allowed to own weapons in denerim to begin with. so this means that they went to SIGNIFICANT effort to keep this thing at all.
it survived hundreds of years from the dales collapsing to the present day thedas, with the name and story attached, despite the various displacements and woes the elves went through in between then.
the fact that it's named after fen'harel, and yet has this positive connotation of defending a home rather than betraying allies, is huge actually! like that's wild. not only did the city elves remember fen'harel at all As A Concept despite their forced conversion to andrastianism, they ended up with a very different view of it than the dalish.
i would argue that given how the city elves are always struggling under corrupt and brutal nobility, they might have retained a stronger cultural memory of the arlathan rebellion as a positive thing in their stories. and the dalish clans are technically descended from dales nobility too, so that would also have an effect on their ideology?
FURTHERMORE. if we assume there were multiple felassan-style immortal elves running around, with varying loyalties and agendas, then... i am once more on my "the dalish Historical Misinformation Nightmare has been fomented intentionally by immortal elf agents to keep them worshiping the evanuris" ted talk.
which also explains why the city elves didn't get affected by that! bc... the type of immortal elf who would be an evanuris partisan, would also see the city elves as hopeless and not even worth the trouble to influence.
THIS is how the city elves can still win-

(wakes up in a cold sweat) the fact that rivaling merrill and trying to dissuade her from destroying her life in the pursuit of earning back her clan's love and respect only pushes her to try even harder because now she needs to work double time to earn back YOUR love and respect

this is not to say the leaks aren’t important, because they ARE.
game devs are constantly put in shit positions and it almost always is reflected in the games result :(
All the veilguard dev leaks were really surprising to yall?
after everything DA and ME went through, you really thought EA was going to change?

There's literally no excuse to be shitting on the devs after this. There's no excuse to be making self-aggrandizing posts about how the devs “could have made something out of” some dumbass detail or other that edgy posters like to pick on. There's no excuse to be complaining about how DATV wasn't what you wanted, and how some writer or other hated a character, or point fingers because you personally feel like your cheerios were pissed in.
There never was, but the continued confessions of the conditions they were under, EA's general behavior, and the fact that in the end we got a game that is as mechanically smooth, visually beautiful, and emotionally affecting as it is, is nothing short of a miracle, and a testament to how much they did actually deeply care. They all put an incredible amount of work into this. And then got wrung out by their workplace and “fans” alike.

The whole difference between something being mentioned vs. something being explored is actually why I prefer narrative writing in Veilguard to most previous games except for, maybe, DA2 which is my personal favorite. This is subjective, I prefer tighter narratives to expansive sandboxes where things are kind of scattered like pebbles that fans can draw theories off.
And within this subjective opinion, I just adore how more concise narratives cut off all of that mess that couldn't be handled meaningfully within a specific story. Your story is about grief, loss, past that cannot be returned to, and the ordeal of making the current world a better place to live in? All of your characters deal with something within this area of theme? Great!
In my opinion, Veilguard might mention less things but explore questions it is concerned about deeper. Which is what I am looking for in narrative-driven media, personally.
