What is the allure of emotional unavailability that makes so many of us abandon ourselves for the other person? Is it really love or is there more to it? “A Very Nice Girl” is about Anna, a London conservatory student studying to be an Opera singer, whose life has not been the easiest. One night she meets Max, 14 years older and a wealthy financier.

There's this initial moment when someone who feels so special chooses you and it's like everything you've ever felt bad about your life disappears for a bit. If you can make this person love you, it proves you are lovable. It was difficult reading ‘A Nice Girl’ at times because so many moments reminded me of some of the same mistakes I've made in the past. I desperately wished I could let Anna know how exceptional she was. I know this quote is said all the time, but we truly do accept the love we think we deserve. If I could end this book reflection-turned personal therapy session with one piece of unsolicited advice for anyone engaging with an emotionally unavailable person it would be to ask yourself - are you’re truly happy with this person or are you addicted to proving to this person and yourself that you’re worth it and special?
