I don’t know why I’m so mad about this but I when I see a post saying “Abby was a enabling Marcus” and then not acknowledge that it was two sided because they were both enabling him each other. Like they were parallels all season and if people cannot see they were both at fault it just disappoints me.

I saw something once about how it’s not “women supporting women” it’s “women protecting women” because it doesn’t matter how much you hate her, if you see her in harm’s way you get her out of the way and i’ve never seen anything that encapsulates it more than “Ginny and Georgia” when Joe mentions to Cynthia that he thinks Georgia might be in trouble and then the next day she sees Gil putting hands on Georgia and she goes and pulls her away and then blacklists him in the Wellsbury realty community after they spent 17 episodes literally despising each other

i love the weather imagery in next to normal and how gabe is the only one to really mention how beautiful the world is in the beginning to show how he's not actually alive and there. it also shows that until diana and dan acknowledge gabe and begin to really grieve him, they will never know this perfect world gabe talks about and their and natalie's (by extension) lives will forever be clouded in sadness, even during what are supposed to be happy moments




but in the closing song, everyone sings the lyrics below to show that the goodmans are finally processing gabe's death and properly grieving, which will make everyone's lives a little less cloudy and sad and will allow them to eventually reach this equilibrium with gabe's sunny world

the reimagining of gabe into a sad wet mama’s boy is incredible for a lot of reasons but i love it most as a reflection of diana. who does she need her son to be?? typically the answer has been a strong, healthy lad without any problems of his own, who can never fail and can always protect her. but this version has her craving a boy who needs her completely, a sweet defenseless thing she can nurture and never ever let down. she can be a mother to him the way she can’t be to her living child and receive the kind of love from him she hasn’t earned from natalie. just great stuff. the virgin chad gabe vs the chad virgin gabe

One of my favorite parts of Hadestown is the way Hermes slips so seamlessly between participant and narrator. The fact that he knows from the beginning how the story is going to go, but still plays his part, surrounded by people who don’t know they’re characters in a tragedy. And he plays his part well. Every night, he tells Orpheus, “You want to talk to her? Go on," and every night, he asks, “Just how far would you go for her?” Every night, Orpheus asks him, “ It’s not a trick?” and he tells him, “No, it’s a test.” And every night, when the cycle starts again, when his voice is so broken with grief that he can barely get the words out to tell the audience - the audience that he and no one else has known was there the whole time - “Don’t ask why, brother, don’t ask how he could have come so close. The song was written long ago, and that is how it goes,” when Eurydice appears - fresh-faced and alive, with no memory of what has just happened - to ask, “anybody got a match?” he wordlessly extends his matchbook to her, and lets the story start anew. Someone’s got to tell the tale, whether or not it turns out well.
And still - AND STILL - every night, at the very beginning, he says, “Maybe it will turn out this time, on the road to hell, on the railroad line.”

i went into Next to Normal prepared to be blown away by Jack Wolfe’s performance and i absolutely was. he did an amazing job. BUT. Eleanor Worthington-Cox as Natalie was fucking incredible. the emotion that she portrayed was insane- when she was being sarcastic, angry, sad, any of it. she genuinely did so fantastic and i think she deserves a lot more appreciation

thinkin about how fuckin insane it was to let Jack sing the line 'n I'll tell you the truth if you let me try' directly to the audience. it's the only time a character interacts with us as the viewer n it's from Gabe. who is as much a third party as we are. he's not an active participant in the events of the story. he's been dead n gone for 18 years. he tells us. he's been tryin to tell us.
