The  Drowned  God  gives  and  he  takes  in  equal  amount  —  and  in  281  AC ,  in  welcoming  the  babe  to  be  known  as  Gena  Pyke  into  the  world ,  he  took  from  her  the  mother  that  gave  her  life. Myria  of  Lys  had  lived  a  harsh  life ,  far  from  home  as  a  thrall  to  the  Lord  of  the  Iron  Islands ,  bearing  him  three  girls  over  7  years ,  2  of  which  survived  past  infancy.  But  she  was  a  soft  woman  and  a  caring  mother  to  her  eldest  daughter  Gysella;  not  that  Gena  knew  any  of  this  kindness ,  and  nor  did  she  know  her  sister  particularly  well  —  who  had  been  taken  to  the  castle  to  train  as  a  seamstress.   After  her  birth ,  she  was  raised  alongside  her  half-brother  Urron  by  his  Tyroshi  mother  until  she  too  died  in  childbirth  in  284  AC.  A  few  moons passed  whilst  the  question  of  what  exactly  was  to  be  done  about  the  bastards ,  until  it  was  agreed  that  the  young  girl  would  be  sent  to  Blacktyde ,  where  Lord  Baelor  had  a  daughter  just  one  year  older  than  Gena.   Life  on  Blacktyde  was  neither  more  pleasant  nor  any  worse  than  what  the  girl’s  life  would  have  been  like  had  she  stayed  on  Pyke.  As  a  bastard ,  there  was  little  care  given  to  her  education ,  so  Gena  was  left  in  the  care  of  the  other  kids  that  inhabited  the  island.  By  her  10th  nameday ,  Gena  had  begun  to  force  her  way  into  the  training  sessions  that  the  boys  were  put  through  —  against  the  backdrop  of  jeering  boys  branding  her  worth  less  than  a  salt  wife ,  the  feisty  blonde  refused  to  be  scared  off  from  training  to  become  a  warrior  in  her  own  right.   Small  and  with  quick  reflexes ,  Gena  was  an  agile  young  girl,  yet  her  size  held  her  back  in  wielding  with  ease  the  large  axes  favoured  by  her  people.   Then  one  day ,  she  was  handed  her  first  bow ,  made  specifically  for  her  smaller  stature ,  and  Gena  was  in  love.   From  the  age  of  15 ,  Gena  spent  as  much  time  as  she  could  out  at  sea,  standing  as  a  loyal  shadow  behind  Lord  Blacktyde ,  or  flirting  with  other  captains  for  passage  whenever  Baelor  remained  at  home.  During  a  petty  reave  in  the  Westerlands ,  Gena  was  injured  by  two  arrows  in  her  dominant  arm;  stumbling  and  bleeding ,  she  managed  to  get  closer  to  the  enemy  archer  before  flinging  a  knife  that  she  kept  on  her  belt  at  his  throat ,  spitting  down  on  the  dying  man  before  returning  to  the  ship  before  she  collapsed.  The  wounds  were  treated  and  healed  as  well  as  they  could  be  for  her  to  continue  as  an  archer.
