Picture the scene from endgame: Thanos snaps his fingers and realises the stones are not in the gauntlet, Carol rushes to her feet and kicks him away from them, she sees Tony with the stones, steps to his side and lays a hand on his shoulder, the power of all stones flows through both of them, Rhodey goes to them and holds Carol’s free hand, Steve sees what they are doing and how the power of all stones combined is being shared between the three of them, he walks to Tony and holds his other hand, the rest of the avengers follows, they are grabbing onto each other and sharing the brunt of the power from the infinity stones, Tony does the snap and instead of saying I am iron man we get a shot of every hero holding onto each other, facing Thanos, there’s a close up to Tony and he says “and we are the avengers”.

Tony does not die but is hurt enough to be forced to retire, is the ending of his Iron Man arc, is the ending of the first generation of avengers.
