The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) says it has started printing ballot papers, with which a referendum would be conducted for the people of the South East to vote if to remain in Nigeria or secede. The group said it plans to hold the referendum latter this year, and that it was determined to ensure that the exercise took place without violence.A press release by the Media and Publicity Secretary of the group, Mr Emma powerful called on the people of the area to ignore rumours by sponsored individuals who have equated referendum to call for war, saying that both were different. He said, âEfforts geared towards this first referendum is gathering unstoppable momentum with dates for the exercise to be announced soon. 40 million ballot papers are being printed and readied for distribution to every clan and village in Biafraland for all adults over the age of 18 to express their preference.âFor those that set out to mislead the populace by equating IPOBâs call for referendum as a call for war, in order to mask their betrayal of the people, will no doubt find another reason or excuse to object to this upcoming plebiscite.âThe group reminded that it would not be the first time a referendum was going to be held in the country, as it has been held previously, and did not amount to war either.âIt is worth reminding that on the 11th February 1961, Nigeria conducted a referendum for the people of Southern Cameroon to determine whether they wish to be part of Nigeria or merge with the Francophone northern Cameroon.âThis referendum resulted in the peaceful secession of the then NCNC controlled Anglophone Cameroon from Nigeria. In other words, they voted to leave Nigeria for good. That was democracy in action not war.âNo war was fought and no ethnic group was threatened with annihilation. If those parading themselves as leaders, with their much touted academic accomplishments, are not aware of this relatively modern history, then the pervading ignorance in Nigeria, occasioned by the spectacular collapse of the education system, is more generational than earlier thought.âIf those that claim to be the elite in the society cannot reference Southern Cameroons as a case where referendum resolved an intractable issue, then their supposed elitism is founded on pure fantasy.âAgain, on the 13th of July 1963, Nigeria conducted another referendum which led to the creation of the defunct Mid-west from the supposedly Yoruba dominated Western region. The old Mid-Western region comprised of parts of todayâs Delta and Edo states. No war was fought, no ethnic group was threatened with extinction.âThose that canvassed for a referendum then were not labeled war mongers. It speaks of the magnitude of prevailing ignorance in Nigeria that people are in this age unaware of the fact that referendum has been used in Nigeria before to resolve a seemingly intractable issue.âThe group, therefore, alerted that plans were at advanced stages in preparation for the first in its three-stage referendum process towards the peaceful, non-violent restoration of the nation of Biafra. It said, âOur decision to hold the first of the three plebiscite later this year has vindicated IPOBâs resilience in sticking to the principles of non-violent agitation for Biafra, in the face of government brutality and treachery from enemies within.âThrough this age-long democratic process, IPOB said, it shall return power to the long suffering downtrodden masses, to enable them determine their destiny which it said was cruelly taken away by successive Nigerian governments(Source: Dailypost)

There was a protest in Owerri, Imo state on Saturday, as All Progressives Congressâ Local Government Areas congresses could not take place.APC youths, numbering over 2000, barricaded major roads in Owerri, causing traffic gridlock in the state capital for hours. This is even as the protesting youths stormed the residence of the national Organizing secretary of the party, Senator Osita Izunna, demanding his prosecution. It took a police detachment from the state police command, to persuade the embittered youths to leave the major roads. The leader of the youths, Jeff Nwoha, who spoke to journalists at Government roundabout, where they camped for hours, urged the national working committee of the party to discipline the members of the party in the state who had âbeen causing troubles in the partyâ.He urged the leadership of the party to fix a new date for the conduct of the botched ward congress of the party in the state.According to Nwoha, âWe want to join president Muhammadu Buhari to fight corruption. We demand that all those who tried to rig the botched ward congress in Imo state be disciplined. The leadership of the party should discipline those who stole the sensitive materials during the botched ward congress in Imo state. There was no ward congress in Imo state, we, therefore, urge the party leadership to announce a date for the conduct of a fresh ward congress in Imo state.âThe APC state publicity secretary, Nwabueze Oguchienti, said that the protesting youths should stop stampeding the party. The APC spokesperson said that âcongresses are entirely a party affair. The protesting youths should allow us to manage the crisis and reposition the party to winning ways.âHe confirmed to our correspondent that the LGA congress going on nationwide had been postponed in the state

Mercy Johnson Opens Up On Divorce Rumors https://ift.tt/2KT0oNs

Earlier this year, it was reported that star actress Mercy Johnson was experiencing some confusion and disorder in her marriage simply because she deleted all her pictures including the ones that captured her husband, from her Instagram page. Although the actress refuted the rumour to be false by posting a cosy picture of her and her man, she never really addressed the issue till she spoke to Saturday Beats recently. While chatting with Saturday Beats, she stated that she could not return her wedding ring to the husband. âI did not feel bad when I read the news that my marriage was hitting the rocks because it was not true. I am very comfortable in my own space and I am not out to please anybody. I am always true to myself and I continue to be a happy person. There was absolutely no problem between my husband and me, I only deleted the old pictures on my Instagram page. They were old so I deleted them to post new ones. I am not letting my husband go; even when he is angry, I would beg him. You see these beautiful rings that he has given to me, I am never returning them,â she said. The mother of three further revealed that her visit to the labour room was not over as she hopes to have another child. âI am going to have another baby very soon. I am obsessed with children and while growing up, I had always wanted to have four children, so we have to complete the equation,â she said. The actress who doubles as the Senior Special Assistant on Entertainment, Arts and Culture in Kogi State was eager to speak about her most recent project which is a movie title, âThe Lamb.â The movie which is subtitled in Igala language, tells the story of a legendary Igala princess warrior, who, despite being the pride of her father and loved by her people, had to be sacrificed for peace. âNot only does âThe Lamb,â stand out in terms of its plot and world-class production, it also evokes ancient memories in the most compelling manner. It is a thoroughly researched work that also brings to the fore, the ancient cultural relationship between the Igala people and the Edos. One of such initiatives is the Kogi State Diaries which seeks to harness the media as a tool for telling the story of the people of the state and showcasing their cultural diversity to a global audience. The movie is co-sponsored by the Kogi State Government and directed by Frank Rajah Arase. Quite a number of upcoming acts that participated in Governor Yahaya Belloâs talent hunt show also featured in the movie. âIt has not been easy combining my roles as an actress, representative of Kogi State, a mother and a wife but I describe myself as a home girl and everything has always been about a system of priority for me. So God comes first, my family and then work; God and my family have to be settled before we can talk about work because when I am not happy at home, I cannot function in whatever capacity I ought to function, so I have always followed my priorities. As I speak with you, if I get a call from my kidsâ school and they inform me that something happened, I would leave everything I am doing and rush there,âshe noted. First Nationwide Election In Iraq Since IS Was Defeated Ă https://ift.tt/2jQFxhx

Quote
Iraq headed to the polls Saturday for its first parliamentary election since declaring victory over the Islamic State group, with the country hoping to shore up a fragile peace and rebuild. Voters across the war-scarred nation cast their ballots under tight security, as the jihadists still pose a major security threat despite a sharp fall in violence. The poll comes with tensions surging between key powers Iran and the United States after Washington pulled out of a key 2015 nuclear deal, sparking fears of a destabilising power struggle in Iraq. Roughly 24.5 million voters face a fragmented political landscape five months after IS were ousted, with the dominant Shiites split, the Kurds in disarray and Sunnis sidelined. Over 15 blood-sodden years since the US-led ouster of Saddam Hussein, disillusionment is widespread and politics is dominated by old faces from an elite seen as mired in corruption and sectarianism. At a polling station in the Baghdad district of Karrada, 74-year-old Sami Wadi appealed for change "to save the country". "I call on all Iraqis to participate in the elections to prevent those who have controlled the nation since 2003 from staying in power," the retiree told AFP. In the former IS bastion, second city Mosul still partially in ruins from the months-long fight to oust the group -- residents hoped for an uptick in their fortunes as they struggle to put their lives back together. "I am voting for security and the economy to stabilise and for a better future," said labourer Ali Fahmi, 26. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi -- who took office as IS rampaged across Iraq in 2014 -- is angling for a new term, claiming credit for defeating the jihadists and seeing off a Kurdish push for independence. But competition from within his Shiite community, the majority group dominating Iraqi politics, should divide the vote and spell lengthy horse-trading to form any government. Whoever emerges as premier will face the mammoth task of rebuilding a country left shattered by the battle against IS -- with donors already pledging $30 billion (25 billion euros). More than two million people remain internally displaced and IS which has threatened the polls maintains the capacity to launch deadly attacks. Iraq has long been a crucible for the rivalry between Iran and the US, with Tehran exerting influence over Shiite politicians and Washington deploying troops to fight IS. Shiite camp divided Overall, just under 7,000 candidates are standing and Iraq's complex system means no single bloc is likely to get anything near a majority in the 329-seat parliament. Abadi who has balanced the US and Iran is facing two leading challengers to his Victory Alliance. Ex-premier Nuri al-Maliki is widely reviled for stirring sectarianism and losing territory to IS, but draws support from hardliners. "I wish for all to go to the ballot boxes to make their choice," Maliki said after casting his ballot, demanding authorities stop "attempts at falsification through the pressuring of voters". Another frontrunner, former transport minister Hadi al-Ameri, led Iran-backed paramilitary units that fought IS alongside Baghdad's troops and heads a list of ex-combattants. Votes in the Sunni heartlands once dominated by IS including Iraq's devastated second city Mosul -- are up in the air as traditional alliances have been shredded by the fallout of jihadist rule. Political forces in the Kurdish community often seen as potential kingmakers are also in disarray after a September vote for independence spectacularly backfired. The Kurds look set to lose some of their clout on the national stage after Baghdad unleashed a battery of sanctions and seized back disputed oil-rich regions. Putting on a brave face, the prime minister of autonomous Kurdistan, Nechirvan Barzani, insisted the political process would not succeed "without Kurdish participation". "No party can form the next government without alliances," he said in televised comments after voting. A senior security official told AFP that some 900,000 police and soldiers are on high alert to protect the vote, with airports and borders shut for the day.Polling stations are open until 6:00 pm (1500 GMT) and initial results are expected in three days(Source: AFP)
