It makes Jack’s heart feel over-full, constricted by his ribcage. All of this marriage talk - it’s not a giant leap, not some big daydream. It’s just… the next step. They live together, and have met each other’s folks, and Jack’s pretty sure they’d have to split custody of Dave’s cat if they split, somehow.

He’s never really had a dream that was right there, right in front of him, within arm’s reach. He likes it - likes the surety of it, the solidness of the ground underneath him.

during the early days of newsies’ run on broadway, official trading cards were given out at the stage door. these cards featured photos of the characters, and on the back featured info about the actors — and official bios for the characters!

i am by no means the first person to compile these, but a lot of the other lists are old, disorganised, and/or missing a few characters. this list features every character given a card, with the main + supporting characters first and the ensemble newsies in alphabetical order. enjoy!

Jack Kelly — A charismatic and natural-born leader. Cares deeply for his fellow newsies, even if it means letting go of his own dreams of travelling west. A gifted artist, he frequently paints backdrops for Miss Medda Larkin's theatre.

Katherine — An energetic and gifted writer. Although born into the upper class, she is determined to establish herself as a serious reporter. The newsboys' strike may be just the chance she needs to start her career!

Davey — Davey's parents are struggling with money so he and his brother sell papers to help support the family. At first he is timid around the other newsies, but eventually comes out of his shell and finds a place of belonging among them.

Les — At age ten (almost!) he is the youngest of the newsies. Despite his youth, this kid knows how to sell a pape! Looks up to his big brother Davey and would do anything to help Jack and the newsies win their strike.

Oscar Delancey — A New York City native who is proud of sharing a name with the famous Delancey Street. Considers himself the "brains" of the Delanceys' operations and leaves most of the dirty work to his brother, Morris.

Morris Delancey — Born in SoHo and worked on the family farm. Abandoned by his parents, believes in survival of the fittest and sticks like glue to his brother, Oscar. They work with their Uncle Wiesel, keeping order at the distribution window of The World.

Crutchie — The ultimate optimist. The crippling effects of polio have left him with a bum leg but you won't find him looking for sympathy. A tough little guy, he's always got a wisecrack and a smile.

Race — Racetrack Higgins is a veteran at the Newsboys' Lodging House. Having lived there most of his orphaned life, he is never spotted without his cigar and is always cracking jokes.

Spot Conlon — Rumor has it he once beat up a group of boys on the Steeplechase Ride while it was in motion. The leader of the Brooklyn newsies, he's got the brains and the brawn and is the only one who can stand up to the famous Jack Kelly.

Albert — Albert DaSilva lives with his father and two older brothers on the Lower East Side. Started selling papes to help his family after his mother died. A prankster who can often be caught stealing cigars from his fellow newsies.

Barney Peanuts — Parents performed in the Barnum & Bailey Circus. Moved to New York to live with his aunt and sold papes to help the family's income. Known among the newsboys for the quirky tricks he picked up in the circus.

Buttons — Benjamin Davenport got his nickname after losing all of his vest buttons while selling newspapers. He's quick with a sewing kit and has a desire for playing and dancing with food utensils (spoons, to be exact).

Elmer — The youngest of nine Polish children. Loves to crack jokes, especially at his own expense. A whiz at math, he runs a dice game and helps the newsies balance their books. Also plays a mean set of spoons!

Finch — Patrick "Finch" Cortes resides with his fellow newsies after running away from home at a young age. With his trusty slingshot, he loves to perfect his sharpshooting with small objects along Bottle Alley. Driven, but also loves a good laugh and drink at Jacobi's.

Henry — Became a newsie at age 11, having to leave the family-owned deli after his father died. His love of food makes him something of an epicure amongst his fellow newsies.

Jo Jo — Raised by nuns in a Harlem cathedral. Full given name: Jorgelino Josephino De La Guerra. Despite his sunny disposition, he is quite michievous and strives to be the richest newsie in town.

Knobs — A shifty jack-of-all-trades, known for his ability to pick any lock in New York City. Met Jack Kelly after taking the doorknobs off of Snyder’s office in The Refuge. Sees opportunity behind every door!

Mush — Considers himself Jack's muscle and confidant. Came to the group missing front teeth, giving him a slight speech impediment and his nickname. Lives in Harlem and plans on eventually opening the most happening juke joint in all of New York!

Romeo — The flirt of the newsies, he's always hitting on the ladies. Though his charm and smooth-talking doesn't always work, it doesn't stop him from trying!

Sniper — Sneaky and self-sufficient son of Sam Wah, who owns the laundry above Jacobi's Deli. Named for his incredible aim, he is the quickest and strongest of the newsies, who revere him — and stay out of his way!

Specs — One of the more easygoing newsies. Does what he is told and happy to do it because he loves selling papes! Biggest dream is to help all the visually-impaired newsies by inventing an alternative to glasses.

Newsies headcanons

- one day, Mush found a raggedy plushie on the floor whilst selling and called him scrappy, ever since then it would sleep in the bed with whoever needed it most. So if you had a bad day, you would get it for the night.

- every Christmas, all the boys gather all of their spare change and use it to buy a present for kloppman, it's never anything much but he really appreciates it

- crutchy will believe anything he's told, so every so often, they all concince him that the most henious and unbelievable lie is a fact. Too this day, he believes them.

- Race and pie eater fell out one day, and a whole newsies civil war broke out

- Daveys, the typa guy to go 'heh...I needed this' when a hangout does silent and everybody groans and throws stuff at him

- they have bets of who can back out before being embarrassed to death last. They will walk in the middle of the street and accuse each other of crazy shit until somebody backs out. "I can't believe you got that girl pregnant." -oh I am so winning this bet- "she was your sister!" -shit- (Race always wins)

- Blink is very easily rage bated, so everybody just teams up on him

- they have the weirdest inside jokes known to man, a new boy will join and they will just hear something like, "I bet your pineapple doesn't jiggle like mine." And every time they ask about it, everybody just giggles at them 😭

- kloppman can't count the number of times he had to tell the boys to be quiet and when he finally thinks they have he walks in to find them laughing so hard it's gone silent and they're crying. He decides that even though they're not alseep atleast their not being loud

- they all think its the funniest thing ever to speak formally to police officers knowing that they hate them, they'll walk past and say something like "oh good evening my great fellow, I presume that the public area has been free of shenanigans on this fair day." And genuinely ptl

- One morning, whilst buying papes, Race was sitting on a plank balanced on a crate, Jack sat down on the other side of it and because it was like a seesaw, it sent Race flying into the air and people bring it up 24/7

- have 'remember when' convos very often.

- everytime specs falls asleep, dutchy takes his glasses and pretends to be him until he wakes up, and everybody addresses him as specs without a thought

- because they're around each other so much they know all of their traits and quirks so as soon as somebody's off, they know about it the second it happens

- newsies talent show. That's it.

- they have a bet to see whose going to marry medda

Like he gets the pefecr mix between uncomfortable and lowkey a little bitchy and I love that for him! He's a good actor. HE IS A GOOD ACTOR DEAR SIR! AMAZING OLD SPORT! Like I lowkey can't imagine anyone else playing Davey right now. (Mad respect to all the people that do it tho I wish I were you) Like his voice fits it perfectly. I can't describe it. i’ve suddenly just got this image of davey riding a bike around manhattan — there was a “bike boom” in the 1890s where cycling became super popular and bicycles also developed greatly into very close to what we know now — because like. it’s a long way to and from his school, this long walk that he has to do alone while his folks are at work. and his parents can’t help but notice in the evenings when davey’s walked home from school and he’s all scuffed and bruising (“ran into a…spot of trouble with some classmates,” he offers stiffly), so it only takes a few occasions for his pa to shell out and get david a secondhand bicycle.

and davey kind of. loves it. cycling freely through the streets with his schoolbag over his shoulder, breeze in his hair. it makes his journeys considerably shorter (and safer) too.

(also, fun fact, there was a bicycle brand at the time called ‘davy’.)

Katherine Pulitzer almost drowned when she was younger.

She was six or seven m; at a country house over the winter months way out in the middle of nowhere.

Bored and restless she ventures outside, further than she should go, knowing nobody is going to notice she’s disappeared, at least not yet. She comes across a lake glistening with a thin layer of ice and she steps out.

It holds for a few more feet before it cracks underneath her.

She remembers going under the water; remembers the shock of numbing cold and the red hot pain burning on her finger tips from trying to claw up from under the ice.

She remembers, almost fondly, the days of attention that followed, how much her father doted on her after she just about made it back, blue and freezing and barely responding.

She thinks about it often. Remembers the split second the ice gave out under her.
