HATE HATE HATE Kaworu not bc he’s a bad character but bc he’s fucking !!! built off of how the angels interpreted ASUKA’S mind !!!! but he’s nothing like her !!!!!!!!!!! imagine how much more interesting Kaworu could be if he had some bizzare imitation of Asuka’s trauma and the first human he actually gets to meet being a scared and lonely Shinji that just lost the real Asuka and is searching for someone to replace her

OBSESSED with the Asuka + Shinji parallels when it comes to Rei. how Asuka begs and pines for her mothers love and ignores Rei for denying her attention, vs how Shinji accepted his mother's death and doesn't seem to care, yet pushes for Reis attention. there's no real theory I can draw from this I just think it's neat

Evangelion, trios, and punishment

Eva is obsessed with sets of three to the point that breaking out of your assigned trio and into another one is worthy of narrative punishment by death. Coincidentally (or not?) there are three examples of characters being punished for trio-breaking: Toji, Naoko, and Kaworu.

Toji belongs to the classmate trio, comprised of Kensuke, Hikari, and himself.

When he becomes a pilot and breaks into the pilot trio in Episode 18, he’s punished for it by losing a leg, though Anno wanted to kill him off originally. He does die in the Sadamoto manga, which wasn’t subject to the same censorship that prevented Toji from being killed off in the TV series.

After Yui dies, Naoko tries to break into the Gehirn trio, (Gendo, Yui, and Fuyutsuki) and tries to take Yui’s place as Gendo’s love interest.

Although there’s an empty spot because of Yui’s death, Naoko is still punished with death – taking her own life after murdering Rei I.

Finally, we come to Kaworu Nagisa. Asuka is out of commission during Episode 24, but that doesn’t change the fact that she’s still there.

Breaking into the pilot trio is especially dangerous, as was established with Toji. As such, it’s no surprise that Kaworu is punished with death.

By the end, we have a trio of trio breakers. Toji, Naoko, and Kaworu.

Additionally, when members of an established trio die, it sends the remaining two members into a spiral. After Yui dies, Gendo and Fuyutsuki spare no expense and leave no stone unturned in an attempt to bring her back to life via their creation of Rei and the Human Instrumentality Project. After Kaji dies, both Misato and Ritsuko spin out of control. After Rei II dies, Asuka and Shinji’s relationship becomes more turbulent and toxic than ever before.
