As a wheelchair user I'm trying to reframe my language for "being in the way."
"I'm in the way," "I can't fit," and "I can't go there," is becoming "there's not enough space," "the walkway is too narrow," and "that place isn't accessible."
It's a small change, but to me it feels as if I'm redirecting blame from myself to the people that made these places inaccessible in the first place. I don't want people to just think that they're helping me, I want them to think that they're making up for someone else's wrongdoing. I want them to remember every time I've needed help as something someone else caused.

Every time I look at a specific set of Irish maps that show the decline of Irish speakers between 1800 and 2000 I want to SCREAM
In 1800, almost three quarters of our island is depicted as Irish speakers, with the British dominated Pale region (Dublin and surrounding areas) not speaking Irish.
In 1850, shortly after the famine, the graphic recedes right back to just the west coast of Ireland, showing the population of Irish speakers.
And the reason is the Famine. An Górta Mór, the Great Hunger, our genocide. So many people died, and even more emigrated and they never taught Irish to their descendants because we were so hated that to acknowledge yourself as Irish, as an Irish-speaker meant you would have far less opportunities in life, so we lost our language.
And almost two hundred YEARS after the Famine, we've regained our population but not our language.
I love Irish so incredibly much, it is the language of my heart and soul, mo teanga féin álainn, and I will never, not in a thousand lifetimes, forgive those who enforced a Famine on my country, who exported corn and grain to other lands when my people were starving.
Ireland had food, it had crops, the Irish people laboured in our fields to grow crops and the British put it all on ships to feed the rest of their Empire and not us.
I will never, ever, stop being angry about the Famine and until the day I die, I will speak Irish for all of mo shinsirigh, mo chlann a fuair bás gan a dteanga dúchasach, and I will speak it for myself because is linn na Gaeil, agus is í Gaeilge ár dteanga aoibhinn álainn féin.

recently I have seen a ton of threads on reddit along the lines of, "can non-smokers really tell if someone smokes cigarettes?" or "do non-smokers think everyone who smokes cigarettes smells?"
yes. people with half decent smelling abilities (I would say ye average person who can smell) are able to tell not only if someone is a smoker, but if they live with a smoker or have been around someone smoking cigarettes recently. cigarette smell is awful, it gets into the clothes, it gets into hair, it gets into paper, it gets all over the skin. it seems like people who are around cigarette smoke a lot stop noticing the smell.
just about everyone who can smell (and is not a smoker) notices cigarette smell. it is extremely potent. cigarette smell, even just leftover in clothes, is a common trigger for asthma and other types of breathing problems, and perfumes to cover up the smells can often just make that worse, make someone breathing it sicker, and bring more attention to something that absolutely reeks. a lot of smokers do not realize just how terrible they smell until they stop smoking.
I have ordered fountain pen parts that CLEARLY came from somewhere someone was smoking cigarettes. most of the package was plastic or metal, but there were a few tiny sheets of paper. talking, a few inches by a few inches. the total size of an index card or two. just those few sheets of paper reeked so fucking bad that first I got really sick, and I had to put those parts into a sealed container for months with some baking soda until they stopped smelling so fucking bad and stopped making me so fucking sick. I have no idea just how someone could feel comfortable selling something that stunk that fucking awful, but I guess the people who sent it to me either smoke too much to tell how much their products fucking reek, or they just genuinely did not give a single fuck.
cigarette smoke really, really, really stinks. even if it was from days, weeks, or months ago.

When I was younger and researching the autism diagnosis criteria and symptoms, I thought “oh I couldn’t POSSIBLY be autistic.” Because when I read “takes everything literally” I thought it literally meant EVERYTHING and I was like “I don’t take EVERYTHING literally, just most things!” And I just realized the other day that it didn’t actually mean EVERYTHING and that was an overstatement.

First carriage ride of the year 🐶🌼
For anyone new, Holly Mop is a rescue dog who spent the first few years of her life in a cage. When we first got her she was terrified of being outside and would become ill with stress when we tried to take her on walks. We got her a stroller to see if that would help and it became her favorite thing. Three years later she’s able to walk on leash in quiet spaces, but still loves the elevated view from her carriage.
The flowers are left over from renfaire last year:

Alright, I think I like tumblr now.
A pun post crossed my dash, and I reblogged it with an equally bad pun in return. A couple of my followers find it funny, it's a good day for everyone.
That was on July 7th.
Virality on Reddit was entirely algorithmic. You could garner a couple crossposts, but the success of a post was entirely dependent on whether or not it hit r/all--the main page of Reddit. If your post does that, it's immediately exposed to 10x the number of people and immediately gets upvoted.
On my pun post, I get a couple reblogs. And those reblogs get a couple reblogs--nobody really adds any content to the post, it just gets a couple reblogs here and there.
There's a specific chain of reblogs that I'd like to focus on. The most popular post on this chain has about 25 reblogs on it. Half the posts have three reblogs or fewer. Five posts in this chain have just one reblog total.
But the reblog chain keeps going. And going. It breaches containment many times over. And finally, after a chain THIRTY SIX posts long, at 9:30 AM, July 22nd this morning, it hits a popular account.
Tumblr media
99% percent of the people who have seen the post--virtually unchanged from how it left my dash--have seen it because it was curated by 36 different people. That's insane to me.
None of those 36 people know that they're part of this chain. They saw a post, reblogged it, and moved on. If any one of these people had not reblogged, the post would have a fraction of the impact it has.
And yet, after two weeks, the post has effectively hit the main page of tumblr. It was picked up, only because people liked it enough to show it to their followers. There were no algorithms necessary.
You really, truly, cannot get this on any other website.
