tumblr assignment #15
I had a great semester with SIUC ceramics. my appreciation for clay is now beyond what I could have ever imagined in high school. I am satisfied with my current ceramic works and hope to expand on concepts and further develop my skills in semesters to come. Clay is now my friend. I may have broke a piece here and there and procrastinated the entire time but I am proud of my finished work and plan to create much more.

The film "The Five Obstructions" was an interesting view on how art influences art. The main point I took from the film was that leaving your comfort zone might be uncomfortable but the results could bring you to creating a new masterpiece. In the film the famous director Jorgen Leth is asked to remake his acclaimed film  "The Perfect Human" five different times, each of which must follow specific rules or obstructions. In the art world you may be commissioned to make a specific piece that would require you to hold to certain obstructions as well. I would recommend the film to anyone looking to expand their artistic process.

This is the finished product, I call it "Porcelain Doll" The idea was to make a much less valuable doll into art by comparing it to the neat clean and limb carrying dolls that sit upon shelves. My sister was my biggest inspiration.

This is Nergle, I have dealt with the art of framing in previous mixed media works and I thought it would make a nice piece. I like the idea of hanging an object from an already hanging frame.

tumblr assignment #12
I could not decide on a single project or the ceramic found object project so I am working on two individual pieces. the first found object I used is a hanging head which I refer to as Nergle. Nergle was purchased at a salvation army and is known to scare small children and dogs, this is why I named him after this trickster demon. My second found object is a small vase which was also purchased by me from salvation army in the past, it has a native American design around it and I chose it because it is the best sized vase for my idea.

The non ceramic material I will use in my ceramics undercover project will be leather that I have found. This was what convinced me to make these pig heads in the first place. I am a vegetarian and I guess that is my number one influence on this project.

For my ceramics undercover project I have made this mother and child bottles in the shape of pig heads. The insides are glazed in hopes for these little piggy's to be functional.

The article “Richard Slee: From Utility to Futility" shows the works of ceramic artist Richard Slee and explores the idea of non functional tools and appropriately using a studio space. Slee's work is full of concept, such as making clay hammers that would shatter on the first nail or even placing these tools on a sheet of glass to put the viewers on edge. Given the fragility of ceramics I believe Slee's work is pointing out a very interesting concept that can continue to be explored in ceramic art.

I painted the body to look metallic and l added some of my own comic/videogame influences to make this little guy come to life. He also sports a Swiss army knife on his back, in case of emergency.

For my ceramic and other assignment I have decided to make a robot jar. This is the body I designed and after smashing and rebuilding the head and losing an arm he is now ready to have non ceramic components added. The ceramic body is certainly an important part of the piece but the non-ceramic pieces will be the cherry on top... I will not literally put a cherry on top.

For my Creamicness project I am focusing on how easily clay can be altered and I am creating face pots. I have been throwing all different shapes and sizes of vessels so I thought it would make a great canvas for me to distort. Beyond just altering thrown pieces I have chosen to make face pots because there is a strong history of face pots here in America.

This Fragmented tea set was made by Marek Cecula, he is a ceramic artist who focuses on the media influences of conceptual art and ceramics. This piece is not a functioning tea pot and I think this make a clear statement about functional ceramic shapes becoming non functional then becoming only visual art.
Tumblr media
"Canon EOS Rebel t4i" Cecula designed this teas set after the popular Canon Rebel series.
Tumblr media
This piece is titled "Ergo", the word meaning therefore or as a result. I believe this piece is meant to focus its viewers on the influences of society and the ever so changing future.
Marek Cecula's work relates to media because of the IKEA like curves in his pieces and his light references to modern technology.

"Waiting" this piece by Fontana is another canvas marked by the artist. The tone of the canvas and the frame present a very raw and humanistic quality that is common in his work.

This piece "Attese" by Fontana really caught my eyes, he is know to cut different color canvases with slits this way. The faded wash of this canvas and the composition of the slits are unique compared to similar works.

I enjoy throwing on the wheel, I even enjoy writing about it. More than just making a lump of clay turn into a work of art. Throwing helps me find my center, if I mess up I know I can wedge the scraps of a failed attempt back together and find a decent outcome. Throwing is usually performed to make vessels and functional wares, depending on the thrower some come symmetrical and some do not. Throwing reminds me of blowing glass and controlling earth.
