any advice for creatives who are struggling to value their work? how to make first steps in transitioning from working for free to getting paid 4 what u already do. and how to know if your work/experience/skill is at the stage where it’s worth money!

artmaking and music is so weird because we’re creating intangible stuff and then also trying to make an income from it. it’s really important that your time is valued by other ppl and that you get compensated for work. when my friends and i were starting out we would all just do ‘creative trades’ ie. doing mixing, playing, visuals etc for each other. it definitely takes a couple years to see any money front things, and i was still deep into the second EP rollout before i could leave my hospo job. i don’t think there’s a single clear answer on how to make money from music unfortunately. i funded the first two EPs with a grant from Unearthed and a publishing advance, so i ducked a lot of the usual expenses. grants are a great way to help fund a project without having to sign a deal. i think it’s just persistence, putting yourself out there and having the confidence to ask for what you think is fair. sorry maybe this is vague…writing this a teeny bit hungover and just woke up

ty! for me, it’s about being 17 finishing high school and being determined to find a concrete answer about my sexuality. i hadn’t come out to my friends and it was literally the only thing i thought about. at the time, all i wanted was a label or word that would feel like home. i guess this song is trying to get back into that super naive, anxious headspace for a bit

i remember troye’s coming out video was huge for me when i was in high school. first time i felt properly seen by another person on the internet especially cos it was another guy from aus. skip forward 5 years and i’ve got a co-write on ‘can’t go back baby’ from his beautiful new album out today <3 proud moment.

when i look at the australian music scene atm, i think about the nouvelle vague in France, or any 'new-wave' movement in art history. those intensely creative periods of art-making seem to be influenced by staleness, and a general frustration from audiences that trends are too derivative of the US/UK. I really see that for this country. lotsa trend-hopping and 'I'm the ____ of Australia' and not enough people carving out a unique space for themselves on an international scale. blame that on the influence of local gatekeeper's taste or blame it on shitty A&R's but I feel like it's gone on long enough - people are ready for something new. as peers and consumers I feel like it's our job to help feed this new wave, and support art we find inspiring and fresh. Sydney could be a world music city if we put our tall-poppy syndrome aside for a sec. I just wanna see more people coming together to support great work. hate to be a broken record but ://
