Also many states have wait lists for state funded services, and if the family exists and are willing your priority level on the waitlist is impacted even if you do manage to jump through all of those hoops. The level of care also impacts your priority. families often have to also fill in the gaps when they do get off the wait list and onto services. and especially if they are assessed as only needing about half of the hours of services that they actually need- not an uncommon thing. but even when someone is assessed as needing 24 hr care, family still often has to step in when the person wants to do something that is inconvenient for the provider, like go on vacation with family, attend certain less common religious services or rites, go to visit their family or to a family event, attend concerts that clash with scheduling or require travelling out of their town, or attend a convention or similar. And if you get your care in group homes? even going to the movie theater becomes a "well I guess I can get my family member to take me" because unless it's countable as an outing for the whole house you can't get staff to take you waaaay too often.

no disabled person should have their parents be their only choice for support/caregivers. it’s not a privilege to be stuck with them and you don’t have to be grateful.
