Character Analysis of Kanzuki Urumi

I finished Great Teacher Onizuka the other day and I must say that Kanzaki Urumi is my favorite character! Appearance wise she is simple but also very unique. She has long blonde hair which is very simple and ordinary but her eyes are two different colors, blue and brown, which makes her design interesting. Her most prominent traits are that she has an IQ over 200 and therefore gets bored easily as everything is predictable and transparent to her because she is able to look through everything. She therefore relies on pranking people or messing with people’s lives to be entertained. The first time we get to know her is when she tricks Onizuka and gets him into sticky situations. She shows her reckless behavior and does not care when she brings chaos to other people. She constantly terrorizes teachers, causes destruction wherever she goes and plays with people’s lives.  She does not care about the feelings of others and easily throws people under the bus when it is convenient. Kanzaki pretty much fulfills every characteristics of a sociopath. She has no fear of hiring men to kidnap Miyabi and her friends and does not care about the consequences or the mental toll they suffer afterwards. Events that triggered that behavior were that she was betrayed by her former teacher because she revealed the secret of her conception to everyone in class. Since then Kanzaki developed her ruthless behavior and her indifference to others people’s feelings. Later on she confesses that she is terribly lonely and depressed and even has suicidal tendencies. Not only is that the result of people not being on her level intelligence wise and thus not being able to entertain her or give her what she misses in her life but also that she was not conceived out of love. Her mother wanted an extraordinarily intelligent child and so Kanzaki was conceived by IVF. Kanzaki’s mother neglects her since she has no time to take care of her. Kanzaki therefore lacks genuine love and good company in her life because she feels like she was born for a purpose and not out of love. She is unable to build genuine friendships and walks through life alone. Being friends with Miyabi did not last long and it did not seem like a genuine friendship since Miyabi uses her to fulfill her plans. Kanzaki also likes to show her dominance and superiority by controlling other people such as Onizuka (who she regularly takes on a leash and make him act like a dog) and likes to be in power. She is very suited to be a leader since she does not exhibit followership tendencies. She uses and manipulates people for her own personal gain (e.g. making Onizuka buy her expensive food). She hides behind a mischievous and manipulative façade to hide her loneliness. However after befriending Onizuka and realizing school can be fun there is a shift to her decisions. She no longer manipulates people for her own gain but to protect her friends. Miyabi and her friends schemed a plan to get Onizuka fired and Kanzaki does not hesitate to bring them down. In that sense she is very loyal to her friends. She will not let anyone get in her way and is ready to bring anyone down who hurts her. When Miyabi threatened Kanzaki to reveal her father’s secrets she reminded Miyabi that she is a force that cannot be messed with. One big critical point about her character is that she intended to sell Miyabi and her friends to rapists. She does not show compassion to what they have to go through especially as someone who is female too and can potentially get into these situations as well. However that action shows how much power she possesses to organize a criminal act just by her doing and planning. My conclusion is that she is a very interesting and multi-dimensional character with lots of different layers. Her personality is definitely one of a kind!
