Term Evaluation (Part 3)
Solutions made in work?:
Most of the solutions I made when having trouble on a projects was to either take a small break and look at it again, see which details and parts that weren't liked and change them or remove them.
How do you think your work compares to other designers/sculptors, etc?:
My work when compared to other people may seem not as appealing, but a reason for this is that some of my projects were first time things. Once there has been more time spent and develop skills in certain things will allow me to get to the skill that they're at.
Work compared to other artists, tutorials, designers:
When making my 3D model I was inspired by another artist, but they only concentrate on 2D illustration and comic book work. The tutorial which helped with making my snake head looks nothing like the piece made at the end of the video, as they became two different things. The only thing that stayed the same was that they had a base body made out of soft materials.
How does my work relate to industry quality?
When relating my work to the industry quality that is around now, I'd say that my illustrations are definitely up to standard, but there is still work in my sculpting clay and 3D drawing skills to be worked on to get them to the quality that they need to be at.

Term Evaluation (Part 2)
Storyboards - These are sort of helpful when in the making of comic pages. In my time of using them, I also used it for some of my planning of a MAP part, but for most things I prefer to have a very described paragraph of ideas I want.
Tumblr media
Animation pieces in both 3D and 2D art - 3D was made with the help of a 3D animation software, as you just put the file of the 3D model into the software and then they have a lot of different options of actions to choose from. Whilst with 2D animation, you have to draw each frame yourself. I do prefer 2D over 3D though, even if it maybe more tedious.
Tumblr media
Rotoscoping - Making a real life animation was kind of cool, as it worked like Stop-Motion when taking each photo. When drawing though my art style did sort of change at each frame though, but for a first time thing it was a pretty good result.
Tumblr media
Sketch sheets to plan out ideas - They have been used in the planning out of the handle for stamps and dreadful pies. Having somewhere with both written and drawn out ideas in a more spread out place, are easier for me to understand. Whilst it may seem as the same as storyboards, they have a structure when a sketch sheet has a flow of information instead.
Tumblr media
Dreadful pie made out of super sculpty - This was a fun project as I was able to make it into something that will be canon in my story. It was sometimes difficult at first when finalizing the idea in my head but once I got into making it and trying my first idea out, it was a realization that the idea that has now been made irl was a lot better. At first my pieces to my piece were a bit cartoony but once talking to it with my tutor and help made sure I was able to have a more realistic look, so that people would be able to understand what each piece actually is.

Term Evaluation (part 1)
In these two terms I have created:
Character art - which were made in both Procreate and Photoshop. Sometimes I would start with drawing the line art in Photoshop and when it came to adding colour I would save the line art as a JPEG or PNG and move it over to Procreate.
Tumblr media
Key Design - this was one of our first projects to do, it was tasked as our summer project work. I made one for each of my characters in my story using Procreate. Each one was designed to fit the characteristics of the character.
Pixel Art - We used very small pixel sizes as that is the best way to draw in pixel art. They were made in Photoshop, I did find they pretty hard to make as I'm not used to that size of pixels when drawing.
Movie Reviews - The right section we used to draw a character or object that connected to the topic of genre of the movie it self. Illustrations were made with pencil and I sometimes lined then with a lining pen. Then we scored how we thought about the characters, settings, music/surround sound and story out of ten. With then a few written sentences of how we felt about the movie and other things.
Clay seal mold + Plaster seal - Making the clay version was sort of difficult at times as I wasn't sure at times of how I wanted it to fully look. I did decide to make a texture in the middle around the snake shape to sort of make it look like the sand dunes you'd find in a desert. We then made a wall around the edges of the seal, so that when we poured the plaster in it wouldn't spill out. Mixing the plaster was interesting to do, as it was a first time thing and with it being a thermal reaction you had to tell when it was reading to be poured in the mold by putting a part of your finger in. When I got to that part I found out that I had a reaction to it, which may have been a very slight allergic reaction but am not sure. I was able to complete the task anyway, but wore gloves instead. When hardened, it got removed from the mold and any excess pieces of clay were also removed.
Skull drawing - We drew a normal head drawing first and then traced over the head with a skull design with tracing paper. Digital line art done in Photoshop. This was simple with the first part and then did get a bit hard as I've never drawn a skull before. The line art was sort of easy as I used the paper version and traced over it.
Tumblr media
Designing monster from words - Photoshop used for lining and coloured in Procreate. As a class we all picked words which fit with either a part of an animal, colour or shape. Once we had finished creating that list, we then made our own version using all the words from the list. I did find this quite hard, as I've never really done something like this and am more used to when given just one worded or theme prompts for drawing. For the features I tried my best to incorporate them all, but it was slightly harder when it came to the shaping of things.
Tumblr media
Taking parts of different monsters from films and creating my own version - Drawn in Procreate. We were given the base layers in Photoshop, for the mix matching of the creature. I then drew the lineart and coloured it in Procreate. I found it quite fun, as I like inventing new things but also taking parts of what I love and taking other things and putting them together.
Tumblr media
Character sheets - All were made in Procreate, the ones I made only have a double sided head-shot of the character and the information of the characters. Making them are useful for when it comes to having information and a visual of a character. In a way there is an enjoyment to making them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Story playlists on Spotify - This was quite simple as I used music which were in my liked but also music I saw fit well with the atmospheric parts of the stories.
Using Moodboards for drawing - We were given a few different mood boards of different parts of animals and objects. We were told to take a few and merge them into one thing, such as an artifact. I took two which I deemed were simple to use and would fit well together. Starting with a rough sketch of the concept and then building it from there on top of it, with finer details.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gifs - The first was very simple as I only made the colour of the eyes change. It was quite easy to make as it was just a looped animation. The second one was more difficult as it was a big setting area, whilst I made the clouds move in it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Custom Brushes in Photoshop - It was a progress which I didn't really understand at first, but it was fun to do as I was able to have something of my own in the end.
Tumblr media
Headers - Making this was sort of like making the custom brush as I was able to decide which font to use and if I wanted it to have a border or not and the colouration of it too. It was slightly more easy to make, as it didn't feel much of a tedious task.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Super Sculpty ear - It was hard at first to get it look like a proper ear. It looked more from fictional rather than it being from real life. I was able to get help from my tutor though, and was able to make it look more realistic. Now the finished result is better than the first result in my opinion. Making it used the sculpty and modeling it into the right shape, and sculpting tools.
Sticker design - As a class we all made a mushroom person design each. It was quite an easy task with drawing and making the full design but one of our tutors were left with printing them out onto sticker paper. We only recently got them, (at the time this is posted, 18/12/23).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Super Sculpty mold for seal + Resin seal - This is like the first time with the clay and plaster but instead with super sculpty and resin. I found this easier, as the resin mixture had to be poured in by our tutor as it hardens to quickly. But the super sculpty mold was a lot smaller than the clay mold.
Patterned design for character card + Information back - Started off with one design and then with photoshop and also turned it into a custom brush. The pattern was created by making it an overlay and then putting it through symmetry fill and changing the directions it would go into, to get the right pattern wanted. When making the information backing I used the pattern that was made and then boxed it so it would act as the border whilst the writing would go into the boxed area that was inside it. It was hard when making the final decisions for each bit, but after consideration it couldn't be better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Paper weathered envelope - Making a normal envelope was harder than I thought, so I decided to make it in the shape of the box one that is given on Chinese New Year. This worked a lot better for me, as it brings the flare of interest and love that I have for Asian culture into my work. The box one was smaller than the other but a lot easier to make.
3D models using magic voxel - This was one of my hardest projects, as it was a very new thing and I didn't think I have the true eye to draw properly in 3D. But once I got over the hurdle of the first attempt, it was just seeing it from a new eye and learning the better techniques to get it the right way that was needed. It was still difficult but there was progressed that was made.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Character art for cards - At first thoughts it was going to be a full-body drawing but in the end turned into a bust drawing. There wasn't the time to make it a full-body drawing and I don't think I drew the sketched anatomy properly at first. I do prefer it as a bust though, and in another day there will be a full-body drawing of Keabi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Handle for stamp + sort of art doll snake which is adjustable - Not much work was done on the actual handle of the stamp, instead it was spent upon making the snake that wrapped around it. It was interesting to learn all the new techniques needed to make the actual head and how to keep everything in proportion, but in the end it came out beautifully. There was some hardship when sewing the felt and fur together at the end of the making process, as I didn't know what stitch to us all the time in the end I got my hands on it and had a completed sewn body.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Comic pages - These were fun to make, at times it did remind me of PMVs, as they sort of work in the same way. With it being a slower process of animation and only have small parts of movements to show where the story is going.

Prop Setting Ideas:
1st: I decided on the First Aid Dressings as it gave off the idea that there was some innocence, whilst instead there actually isn’t and the box resembles where the play dough might of come from. As my characters are in a different universe, so somethings are stored differently from what they are like here. The napkin was used later by my character, as they had to clean up the mess they made.
2nd: I chose to use the Sloan’s as it reminded me of a whiskey bottle, and I had decided that in the cult/group Keabi is running a few of the members and he himself will have a drinking problem. The flask represents where they would store their alcohol when on person, and the little tub holding up would be where the wax melts are stored for the messenger.

Finished Work Sheet + Pie:
I think my sketched out ideas are pretty good. The story and information of the pie is at the bottom left corner and other info is on the right. This layout of my ideas and work works for me, but I would like to in the future incorporate the two things more together, so it feels free flowing.
Reasoning for the pie as a whole:
The goat do have symbolism in both Christianity and African culture as the believe that goats signifies fertility, health and prosperity. Whilst in Christianity they are the symbol of the devil.

Richard Dadd was an English painter in the Victorian era, he painted his version of depictions of fairies and other supernatural subjects, Orientalist scenes, and enigmatic genre scenes. Which he rendered with obsessive minuscule detail. Richard Dadd committed a horrific crime in 1843, which was that he murdered his own father. He then spent the rest of his life in Bedlam and Broadmoor asylums.
Tumblr media
Sherlock Holmes is one of the best known fictional detectives, he was made by Arthur Conan Doyle. There have been many TV films and series adaptions of him even a manga adaptation which is based of Benedict Cumberbatch. In most TV adaptations of him they picture him as a middle aged man or someone in their 30s, it was only in 2015 that Ian McKellen played him as a 93 year old. Which allows the audience to shed a new light onto him.
Moriarty was Sherlock Holmes' formidable enemy, he was made to show that Holmes could be killed and have the 'heroes' story concluded. He is a criminal mastermind, as he provided other criminals strategies and sometimes protection to escape the law this coming from the intelligence he had in the matter. But it would cost the criminal wanting it that either being an exchange of a fee or a cut from profit.
I have watched a few of the movies, the ones being Elona Holmes 1 + 2, Robert Downey Jr. 'Sherlock Holmes' and a few scenes and episodes of the series that Benedict Cumberbatch plays as Sherlock.
Tumblr media
Penny Dreadfuls are the original comics which were created in the Victorian era, they became a social trend as of the decrease of printing costs to machine-made paper. It allowed a new demographic a readership, the writers were paid a penny a line and as the comics were being created in such a quick pace that they must of got a lot of money from them, (in that time it would of been a lot for them).
Tumblr media
Film Props + Models:
Many films use props and models that help convey factors of the movie, specific props have become very connected to a movie as people now recognise them from just a glance of one. Examples of this are the lightsabers + Death Star from Star Wars, whilst in Harry Potter the wands are the signature piece. From these many people have wanted their own of these, so merchandise has had to been made of them. I myself own a lightsaber and a wand.

Dreadful Pies Research and Links Part 2:
14: Plushie Food:
These designs on this shop are quite simple as it just takes the food and adds a face with a certain facial expression on it. This maybe seen as quite creepy after owning one for a while as it just stares into oblivion.
Promos and giveaways are used by online stores to help spread the word about their store, as it helps them gain more customers.
15: Darwin
Darwin prepared On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, published on November 24th, 1859.
Darwin's idea with species and their evolution has helped the understanding of the scientific way of the creation of Earth and the creatures on it. With his sketchbook work it helps give a visual of his understanding of evolution and how each species has adapted to survive in its environment.
His work in the 19th century didn't fare well to some people as they were Catholic and believed in the creation story, so instead they disclosed his ideas of it. Whilst others were open to his ideals and some went onto to dig deeper and get an even better understanding of it.

Dreadful Pie Research and Links Part 1:
1: Intro to Sweeney Todd and the Penny Dreadful
The story is about how Sweeney Todd enacts his revenge on Judge Turpin for getting him arrested and stealing his child away just because he was married to the women he had a crush on. He meets Mrs Lovett after he arrived back home from being released from prison. He decides to take a different name so that no one will recognise him, that being Benjamin Barker. Her pies were really bad then and so Sweeney Todd was soon helping her out, he took the room above which was where he used to live with his wife and child. He turned into a barbers, a bit later he finally meets Judge Turpin to give him a shave he was close to having his revenge but got interrupted. Turpin then left and Sweeney got very angry as he was so close to what he wanted.
He then decided that a way to help get a supply of meat for Mrs Lovett would be to kill his customers. They got a supply of meat and many people started to come to Mrs Lovett's store, as they turned out to be delicious. No one knew only Sweeney + Lovett, but there was a women who was known to be 'crazy' as she suspected something going on because of the smell from the smoke of the dead bodies. Lovett kept on chasing her away when she would come to the building as she didn't want to go out of business. Later on we learn the women is actually Sweeney's wife, which Lovett told earlier that she had taken poison a while after Sweeney had gone to prison as she became depressed. Instead of her dying it just made her brain go a bit mad.
A lot happens after that but in the end Sweeney gets his revenge on Turpin, Sweeney's child escaped from Turpin, Sweeney accidentally killed his wife and then Mrs Lovett out of anger from not telling him the truth about his wife, and then the child they took in earlier killed Sweeney.
(The reason I don't want to write another paragraph of the whole story is because this post would be too long and this slightly feels like pirating).
2: Human Pies by Ashley Newman & Andrew Fuller
Ashley is a special effects artist whilst Andrew is a baker.
3: Mina Lima
4: Victorian Street Food
Jellied eels were not only a traditional English dish but also was known in Nordic countries.
They are made of 2 ingredients being eels and spiced stock. Eel pie was famous with mash its special green sauce which was known as liquor and drizzled with chilli vinegar.
Both of these dishes were for the working class.
Victorian London - Food and Drink - Fast Food and Food sold on streets - buns
5: History of Pies
Pies were invented in Egypt, the first recipe for one was for a chicken pie. The people who discovered the tablet of the recipe think that it was carved out prior to the 2000 BC. It was then taken over to Rome then Greece.
A shortcrust history of pies - BBC Bitesize
Pies are considered the national dish of England, the reason of this is because that we decided to try out new recipes with them instead of just meat pies.
The British pie – 10 fun facts you didn't know - Britain Magazine
Baker on Great British Bake Off admitting to putting fresh roadkill in pies
I do think that this may have been a good use a meat for him and maybe others when the meat is first fresh but if it isn't fresh I don't think it is a good idea as you have a higher chance to get food poisoned. I personally would not do this myself as I don't think it is a good idea.
6: Weird Food Experiences (personally)
In other places this may not seem weird but some weird foods I have eaten may seem weird in others. I tried dried mealworms or crickets that were flavoured cheese and onion. When I used to eat other meats I did have alligator + kangaroo burger once, (they weren't mixed they were two separate burgers had on different days).

8: Other Movies with humans as food:

They didn't eat their victims but also.... Burke and Hare, grave robbers and murderers
9: Other foods:
Sustainability - the ortolan bunting is being hunted into extinction because it is prized as delicacy and eaten whole. A French delicacy being eaten to death
I don't think this is okay, as we have already made so many species already extinct, instead it should be protected as any other endangered species and should have a law to allow for the number of its species to grow back. We have the same problem with cod and other fish as some are being over-fished. This shouldn't happen to other species either.
10: SCI-FI Films:
Mos Espa is one of the cities on the outer rime of Tatoonie. It's a vast shopping area which you could find various fruits, meats and beverages. The main three places known in Mos Espa are Gragra's gorgmonger booth, Akim's Munch outdoor café and Jira's fruits stall.
The troll market set was made in a Hungarian mine cave. It was made into a vibrant and busy environment. Many of the characters from the show are unique in their own was as either facial structure or body structure have been proportioned in many different ways, which make them very different from humans whilst is the main aim of it. Out of these characters I find the organ grinder quite appealing as the were made to be the same size as a human even though they are supposed to be smaller.
It was said that the mechanics of this character was quite hard as you had to find just the person to be able to get into the costume and then be able to more the animatronics of the costume too.
Tumblr media
youtube
Ideas I got from this clip were that for vendors and sellers are protective of their customers, this maybe to make sure there is still a way that the customer will come back again. The coloured lighting used fit the settings of each scene as well, as the darker lighting with some vibrant parts fit well with the situation going on at the time.
11: ArtWork
Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities
Tumblr media
This is one of the pages from his 4th notebook, pages 37A and 37B. These show some character art from Hellboy 2 and ideas he's had. I think that this is a useful way when doing this kind of work. As I've done this myself sometimes and I think it is quite helpful.
Tumblr media
This is from the 3rd notebook, pages 22A and 22B. There a splotches of fake blood and symbols around some artwork. This sort of works like the other page but has more of an eerie feel to it, as some when first seeing it might mistake the blood for the real thing, instead of noticing that it is actually fake. Which in a way helps as it conveys many different ideas in many different peoples minds of the reasoning of him using fake blood on these pages.
12: Sculptures:
HR Giger was an artist mainly worked in blending human physique with machines with air-brushing and he became very well known as of it. Most people will know his work from the Alien movie, he was inspired by the creature from the two lines in The Necronomicon, as it was pictured as a metallic-looking freakish creature with an eggplant-shaped head.
Tumblr media
(a more modern version of the Alien)
Guillermo Del Toro's movie Mimic sort of goes on the same basis as The Alien movies as it has a weird creature in it which effects what happens to the characters int the movie. In his movie though he uses cockroaches which are normal to this world, but they're harmful as they are carrying the 'Strickler's Disease". This way of utilising bugs in his works make sense as many people believe that certain bugs are harmful as of disease whilst some are but because they carry poison in their system to help protect them from predators.
Tumblr media
The designs of these creatures is that the cockroaches have in a way mutated to the disease they are carrying, like how some species do when in a highly radiated area. Whilst the Alien is very much built for the planet it came from, but has now been transported to Earth and now has to adapt to the environments of the planet and the creatures on it. It doesn't really get any physical changes but I think in the way the creature thinks it has become more strategic.
Tumblr media
The pricing of some of the works on this page is understandable, as for simpler projects which don't take much time will cost less and once more difficulty, time and materials are being used the price will rise as it should and it is reasonable. There are quite a few different designs used, as some are simple with being just a keychain of a paw from a creature whilst some are full-body characters. I think the methods used when making are close to what we have done with some of our projects but instead are more precise so when being mass produced they may have a silicone mold of the design so that they can stick close to the original project, as much as they can.
For this artist their work is different with the style, as it has a slight more cartoony feel to it than the realistic feel you get from The Monster Sandbox. The has been some realism in some of their work, which I think helps with the feel of the character. The quality of work is very good, as you can tell they have taken the time to make sure their work is at the best standard that it can be at. The scale of their work ranges in many different ways as they are able to make big figures to simple illustrations. Their paint work is exceptional as they have the understanding of how the paint will be effected by natural light and which pieces will need lighter colouring than other places. With outcomes they have made, each piece has probably been check to make sure it is at the best quality and from what is seen it is at that.
13: Tutorials

When making my snake head I did look at a sculptor on Youtube that I've known about for quite a while now. I used this video with helping my work, as the head shape is close to what I wanted for my snake.
youtube
I think for these tutorials as a whole, they use many different techniques which will help people depending on what they're making and what effects they want shown on their sculpture/figurine.

Finished Making the Dreadful Pie (extra pieces and finished product):
Just to start with I just realised I forgot to take photos of painting the hoof and when was vanished. I started with the hoof and ear being painted white and then used the dark brown I used for dry brushing the pie crust for the outside fur parts. I used a neon yellow for the bone of the hoof, (this is explained on my work sheet). The horn started with the same yellow as the base but I then mixed the dark brown with the white to make more of a cream colour which looks more realistic to actual bone. For the eye the base was orange with one spot of the same yellow, I then added 2 different shades of brown and a little more yellow and make blotches off it around the eye which a goats eye kinda looks like. With the veins I painted the a slightly neon light pink, and once it was dry I varnished it.
I think with the finished piece I did pretty good and the parts to look realistic to a certain degree but still have a very slightly cartoony feel to them.

Finished the Dreadful Pie (the pie crust):
I started painting the base coat the week I baked the pieces (but forgot to get a photo of it before I left for the day). I then went onto finishing the base coats and shading this Wednesday (6/12/23), I started with a lighter colour for the base coats on each piece even though we were told to start with a darker colour. I do think that they way I did it still works and it still looks good. I dry painted with the darkest colour, which sort of worked like air brushing but with acrylic paint. After finishing painting it I used nail varnish to seal the paint but also make it glossy.

Final Part of Making my Comic Page:
I completed the drawing process last night which was making the background and finishing putting everything together. I wrote the text today, at first I didn’t have a full idea of what I wanted to put for it but in the end I’m okay with what I’ve put at the end of the day. I’m happy with the end result as it’s suitable enough with how I wanted the end result to look like.

5 Examples Of Character Sheets:
Tumblr media
Line art made by: HeartSpark
This is one of my own as an example. As this is quite a simple reference sheet of my character, as it shows to sides of him and I made the little parts to show which colour correlates to its part.
Tumblr media
Line art by: Krapette
This is a much more detailed reference sheet of another character of mine, but what makes it different is that you get 3 different angles of the character, a tail and maw part. Another one with this is that there is a correlated part to put all the colours used and a place for the characters name.
Tumblr media
By: JAKDAW found on Pinterest
This is a very detailed character sheet, which shows the main basics but also what the character holds onto their person and slightly more information on them. To fill in the blank spaces this artist has decided to draw flowers and a bone into them.
Tumblr media
By: miyuli
This shows a full body from the front side of the character and then different facial expressions and what it looks like from different angles. This is quite a simple character sheet, from my perspective.
Tumblr media
By: @sticksandsharks
This is a mix between the two before, as it shows the things which I think are needed in a full character sheet. Being: full body drawing (from different angles), eye close up, facial expression (maybe from different angles).

What Are Penny Dreadfuls?:
They are a cheap, sensational comic/storybook. Which were first published in the 1830s, featuring characters such as Sweeney Todd, Dick Turpin, Varney the Vampire and others. The main subjects of these stories were mainly focusing on the exploits of detectives, criminals, or supernatural entities.
They were created out of various social trends. As the printing costs had decreased to machine made paper, which coupled with the rise of working-class literacy. This allowed a new demographic of readership for the publishing industry to tap into. The writers made a lot of material at a very disorienting pace and only being paid a penny a line.

Types of Animation used in SimpSon intros:
1st: For this my first thoughts of the type(s) of animation which was used was Cel Animation but on a computer instead of being hand drawn. As with Cel Animation you can focus on the characters moving around the setting that you want them in.
DIRECTOR: Michał Socha DESIGN, DIRECTION and ANIMATION: BrosFX PRODUCERS: Ron Diamond
vimeo
--------------------------
2nd: For the illustration part I think of computer animation, but for the smooth motions of the characters there was definitely Rotoscope being used.
youtube
---------------------------
3rd: As it is quite clear Stop Motion has been used, even though for smooth actions used like in the one above, there might have been a very small amount of Rotoscoping or at least references of movements to help get that smoothness.
