Lewis Hine —
This images displayed how child labor had taken over the country and the government had known about it but hadn’t done anything to stop it. Until they saw the pictures. He used text to describe the photos; it helped get the children’s stories across. He takes his images in a shallow depth of field. Which I personally love. Overall I liked how they used Photography to bring change into the world — because everyone did know about child labor but nothing was done about it until the photographs were seen.

Catherine Opie —
She makes unnerving images that makes most viewers uncomfortable to look at. There are many normalcy in her images; for example the one of the women breast feeding. But for many it would make them uncomfortable and look away. I enjoy Opie’s way of images, I also love how she calls it her own royal family. She shows things that no one speaks of or is taboo and shoots them. I like that.

The world view of america is the White Gaze. I love that quote he had said because this is a fact. I love how he made a documentary of black experience because POC lives aren’t very explored. People have a certain view about POC and especially blacks and with his documentary he wanted to show it. He spent 5 years on this documentary, exploring the South as a black American from the north. I want to watch the documentary myself and see because the way he explained it sold me.

Sternfeld’s images are filled with color and softness. His signature look and composition is different from others. I liked his Highline project the best. Because I an familiar with the place and also its nice to see how the highline looked before the parks were set up. And it became a tourist attraction. The weeds and flowers while the city life is beyond it is nice to see. Its so different to see nature along with cityscape.

His book I Know How Furiously Your Heart Is Beating the first picture I am intrigued by is Cami’s View. I love the composition of the image and detailing. The bird sitting on the window along with the books neatly placed on the other side. The greenery beyond is gorgeous and bright and you can see the details of the leaves. I like other pictures in the book too but I think this might be my favorite. It is neat and clean and makes me want to go over there and sit by the silence. He brought emotions out from his capture.

One thing I noticed about his pictures is that they are all composed in the same way. There is a centered subject and there is a symmetry in the images. Some images are very minimal but loud at the same time, others are very loud and minimal at the same time. The blacks and whites in images are dominated. I see the zoomed in images of details of an archway, and a rock with a fossil. The textures are amazing; very beautiful images.

Her images are very candid and colorful. Looking at them makes me feel like I’m there along with the people, laughing and enjoying myself. Even her editorial images are filled with color and a hint of softness to the image. I love how she would take pictures of people in their natural habitats, causing her models to be comfortable in their settings. None of them are posed, and they are looking at the camera but they aren’t shy. Again, her images are bright and candid and makes me feel very homey.

The Wells Cathedral stairs that he had taken picture of, the steps leading up to the lights is one of my favorite pictures ever taken. The composition of the image was amazing, and also the tone and lighting — the outcome is something that deserves all the praises. His captures of the Cathedrals are beautiful, the tone and emotions that flows past me as I stare in complete awe. I love how he keeps in mine of the patterns and shapes of the stones; of how he uses the hallways and pillars as his archway to look beyond the cathedral. Evan’s vision is impeccable.

I love his way of never narrating what he’s doing, but express it in pictorial terms. His goal is to not write but let the viewer decide the story themselves. He location stages and digital manipulates to capture incidents that weren't captured at the time. The image has drama and is a street photography but is composed in a way that films are composed. His work looks real and I wouldn’t have guessed they were staged unless I read it. It has emotions and now I understand why the process is more like film rather than photography.

Used the panoramic format to take her images of China. I love how her inspiration for these photographs began. She loved the lotuses and wanted to photograph them and began with the wilted ones rather than fully bloomed. She feels like panoramic images are a challenge but they are also more magnificent to look at. I loved her images; her landscapes are truly breathtaking. China is a beautiful country to begin with but with her panoramic pictures it gave a more enchanting feel to the images.

Walker Evans —

He worked on documenting the white sharecroppers who were hit hard by the Great Depression. While on that project he was watched closely by the people and the police as well. They wanted the writer and Evans to get out of there. The magazine decided not to publish their article so they published it themselves as a book. He also shot the american life; people fascinated him. I personally loved Evan’s pictures— although I wouldn’t shoot stuff like that myself, I did enjoy seeing how he would show the world of the affects of the Depression, also how people would live their lives. I like how he puts realistic in his images.

Studied in Graphic Designing in Yale and when he returned to London he noticed the radical transformation. He wanted to see what effect the US had in European culture in this rebuilding. He spent a lot of time to engage and work with social injustice. His images were filled with humor. Even decades after his death his images still inspire others by show casing the small joys of life. It is nice seeing every day life of people back in the day, of them doing simple things and enjoying it.

LANDSCAPE/ARCHITECTURE/NATURE —
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I loved my trip to Old Westbury Gardens — in that trip I was able to take images for multiple assignments. This being one. The first picture I tried to use normal architecture images as inspiration. I thought the manor had great texture and wanted to capture it. The second image was of the fountain with lilypads on it, which I found beyond beautiful. Also the architecture on it caught my attention once again. Beautiful. Then the fallen tree with the sun rays hitting my lens. I thought this was a beautiful image for my landscape. A bit haunting but I loved the outcome. Especially the rays.

Bill Brandt —

What I loved the most about Brandt’s photography is his female portraits and his landscapes. With his female portraits I noticed how comfortable his models were — he had placed them in their own environment and allowed them to relax in it before he took their pictures. And thats what made his images even more amazing; by noticing small details. His landscapes on the other hand are even more breathtaking. I don’t enjoy black and white photography much but with hai landscape pictures it fits so well. It leaves the haunted feelings behind. Also the details.

Graciela Iturbide —

I have seen Graciela’s work before and I have admired them. I am unsure where is the location but it looks very rural and village side. The cultures and traditions were viewed from each of the images. Even the people; the images are candid but you can almost see the stories and years in their faces. I loved the image of the dancing ladies in their traditional wear. Going through these images I feel as if I am right there — it strangely brings a smile upon my face. The culture is beautiful and captured amazingly. I want to see and know much more.
