no piece of teen media has ever accurately depicted the quiet psychological warfare of bullying. bullies on TV are always dumb brutes and not the evil geniuses of emotional manipulation that they are in real life. being given a wedgie and having your lunch money stolen is nothing in comparison to a classmate quietly creating a taboo against speaking to you that they intend to enforce against all the other kids. it’s nothing like continuous cutting comments from people you thought were being nice to you. that way that the work of one kid can make you feel like every person on earth silently hates you and that you are dirty, disgusting, worthless, creepy and useless. that you can have friends but many of them will not speak to you at school for fear of the social consequences on their end. how that damage lasts in any social setting for the rest of your life

Suraj swallowed and their eyes widened just a little bit, just enough to suggest that the comment to them by surprise, but while they wanted to give in to the awkward feeling that settled in their stomach and the blush on their cheeks, they instead - almost forcefully - told their brain that Aroon was asking them for help! They offered a smile. "Yes, of course," they said, trying to sound far more confident than they felt. "I'll help you get home, after all, you've brought me home countless of times." It felt like a great safe. "Oh okay good, alright, we can go after food." They blushed further at the mention of a 'cute' spot, so decided to focus on the dim sum part of the conversation. "I don't know if I've ever had Dim Sum," they admitted. "But I'd love to try it." And they felt like liking it for exactly that reason.
while aroon couldn't wait for his vehicle to be back in service , taking public transport gave him a newfound appreciation for others , like suraj who relied on the broken , unreliable service . " i truly believe i don't have to practice much more , but at least for the way home , maybe i'll have your expertise . " the words don't leave his lips with intent , but the moment they're breathed into the air , they seem to sound a little flirtatious , don't they ?? instead of lingering on it or trying to trip over his words , reassuring suraj that that wasn't actually intended to be an invite home , aroon moves quickly to their next topic . " i've not been to any bookstores around here , actually but that sounds so lovely . full of hidden gems , i bet , huh ?? " he bounces to the heels of his sneakers , squinting eyes to catch the name of the nearest street sign . " do you like dim sum ?? i think two or three streets over there's a cute spot we could get some . "

Good doesn’t always follow from good deeds, nor bad deeds result form bad, does it? Even the wise and good cannot see the end of all actions. Scary idea! ANEURIN BARNARD as BORIS PAVLIKOVSK in THE GOLDFINCH (2019)

Matevos complexion brightened even more, not that he thought that was in any way possible, he already knew he was the happiest he'd been in years. Certainly since the outbreak. Not that he'd ever been truly unhappy, maybe just slightly sad, but this was very very different. He was over the moon, he was in heaven, he was beyond happiness and into the stages of total bliss when Elspeth accepted his offer and then suggested he'd lead the way. It wasn't like taking a nice stroll around town, of course not. There was still trouble on the horizon, but Matevos choose not to care. He choose to spend all the time he could possibly spend with Elspeth in her company.
"Alright, great, good, fantastic!" He laughed. "Sorry, uhm, I am going to quickly just..." He took a few bites from the food and downed the coffee. It wasn't as good as coffee before the outbreak, but it had been made on the farm he worked on, so he took some pride in his work. "Okay, so, we'll start outside, because I have to show you what I'm working on, of course." He grabbed their hand and held it firmly in his, his big hand enclosing around hers as they made their way out of the dining area. Matevos knew the layout of the prison by heart, it was his home now, and he hoped it would be a home to Elspeth too. "So... the group you came with, how are they? Nice people?"
there had been moments when elspeth had been close to giving up. it would have been easy, to throw themself to the wolves—to those things—that clawed the walls and tried desperately to breach their surroundings. it almost didn't feel fair, that most of the population had fallen, had been transformed, and they were left to walk the streets alone, far from anyone they had loved, and anyone who had loved them. despite the odds, elspeth had fought onward. she had decided to help others, to sacrifice time and safety for the wellbeing of those she encountered on the road. the road to him. the road to the one person that had made her laugh so hard they choked, the face that had haunted every dream and lifted every nightmare. "a date." the words sounded unfamiliar on her tongue. it had been so long since that first moment in the coffee shop, over the steam of their drinks, with the soft swirl of cinnamon and chocolate. the world was dead, but their feelings had never dulled—if anything, they had built and throbbed and grown larger than either of their separate parts. slowly the tears on their cheeks grew tacky, then dried, and elspeth's wide eyes were left staring up at matevos, as though he would fade away, terrified that he was still only a figment of their imagination. "i would like that. i'd like you to show me." since arriving, her room and the infirmary had been the only places elspeth had known. nowhere else felt safe, or welcome, or as though they were anything above the criminals that used to call those walls home. fingers moved to take hold of matevos's hand. "lead the way." @storiesfromthegrave

Suraj smiled, though it was slightly fake and very worried. They knew that Aroon wouldn't lie about having ran, but he did seem a bit winded. Having always had to take the bus, Suraj was a natural at finding their way through public transport, but they knew not everyone was. And they wished they could've been there for Aroon and helped him through it, and they realised how strange that feeling was, so they instantly scolded their own thoughts. "Practice makes perfect," Suraj commented, though they liked that Aroon had a car and could go where he pleased. They liked it as well when they were allowed to sit next to him. More scolding. "Oh uhm, uh," they blabbered and stumbled over their own words. They hugged their arms to their chest as they tried to come up with something. "I was uhm... I am a little hungry... we could uhm... eat somewhere first, if you're hungry too. And uhm... I want to show you this cool old book store, maybe you've already been. But it's really nice. And uhm... cozy."
there's nothing like making an entrance . actually , it was something aroon hated . luckily , as his fumble played out , it was a) in front of someone he trusted , and b) they weren't inside , so did it even count as making an entrance ?? " i didn't run . i just — " hurried . fingers adjust the strap of his shoulder bag and ruffle through hair , attempting to fix whatever had become jostled in his clumsiness . " — i definitely got turned around and all out of sorts . made the trip into three busses when i accidentally got off on the wrong stop too . i probably would have made better time if i followed your rule . i'll remember for next time . " although , a big part of aroon hoped that there wouldn't be a next time as far as busses were concerned . never again taking having a vehicle for granted . " did you have any ideas in mind on what you would like to do today ?? "

Suraj's eyes grew wider and they held out both arms in the hopes of catching Aroon, though that was absolutely not necessary. They looked taken aback for a moment as the other simply ignored the whole ordeal and launched right into an apology. "Huh? Oh, no, I'm just early, I think..." they looked at their watch - bought for five dollars at a toy store. "You're only a few minutes later than we said, so not a problem at all, I barely noticed." Which was the truth, Suraj had not noticed at all, they hadn't been busy with the time, their mind kept them far more occupied. "Public transport is a daring excursion," they told the other. "You're brave for trying, I have the rule that if it's more than one bus to get there, I'd rather walk part of the way." They looked him over then. "You didn't run here, did you? It's honestly no problem, I would've also waited if you were running late." They would probably have waited two hours - or more - just to get to hang out with Aroon. Heck, he could even tell them he was a day late and they'd still be just glad to see him.
meeting up with friends was something that aroon always looked forward to . although few and far between ( mostly just suraj and one other that he could actually call a friend ) it was a warm welcome from spending free time cuddled up with toulouse and bingining netflix . a cat could only uphold so many meows' to a conversation . he greets the other with a smile to match , beaming before effectively tripping right in front of the other , stumbling to catch himself on a shoe lace that had come loose . " oh , gosh . " aroon manages to steady himself . " hi . sorry if you were waiting long . you haven't been , have you ?? " a hand parts black locks , worried moreso on how long suraj had been waiting than the fact that he almost tasted cement . " my car is in the shop so i thought i would take the bus but as it turns out , i'm not very well versed in navigating public transportation . "

closed starter for @lullabyhrt
Suraj decided to instead of waiting inside of the cafe - where they'd been about 30 minutes before the time them and Aroon had decided to meet up - to wait outside of it. Just because... well, because they were nervous and they felt like fresh air might help to stop themself from overthinking having a nice chill time with a friend. A friend, you hear! Certainly they didn't need their heart to make this anymore difficult, though it was adamant that it tried at least. When they saw Aroon appear around the corner, they smiled and did a little wave, as if it wasn't perfectly clear that they were standing there.
