IT'S TAKEN MORE AND MORE LATELY to rattle d.va — as time grows, so too does she, and the longer she spends in the UNDERCITY, the more it gnaws at her. she can't count the number of times she's wracked her brain trying to remember if anyone had told her it could GET SO BAD. the fact that she CAN'T still fills her with guilt — BUT SHE'S DOING HER TIME FOR IT, unlike the people who PUT THIS SYSTEM INTO PLACE ; source of grief boils down to this:

she cannot say for sure WHICH STRAW broke the C4M3L's back, only that THERE WERE MANY — ROUTINELY, she will forget why she does not go out more. ROUTINELY, she is very quickly reminded. IT'S EASIER TO IGNORE WHEN THEY'RE ASSHOLES. but a sick kid she can't help? a teenager with her father's eyes? IT STILL GETS TO HER. the gentle ways of the levels higher than this are hard to shake, harder to FORGET.

dox does not often sneak up on her anymore — ( AND HARD TO DO SO, given the general lack of privacy ) — but instead becomes a presence she FORGETS IS AROUND. he's become comfortable, in a prickly... cactus-y way. SO WHEN ARMS FOLD AROUND HER, d.va has to wonder for just half a moment if it's REALLY HIM; she slowly leans in with arms reciprocating, ear against his chest, listening to his heart — YEAH, IT'S HIM. . . even stranger. STILL -- she's not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.
" hey, " and she tries not to squeeze, hardly feels up to breathing now; this HARDLY HELPS, and d.va is not sure if trying to voice the matter will improve or worsen dox's mood for the day. it isn't the first time they've had a cry over this -- but she's sure they'd both like it if it could be the LAST.
— it feels wrong, seeking comfort from someone worse off.
plus, hell, she must seem absolutely devastated if dox is offering her a hug.

send in " what makes you think they're alone? " for the sender to unexpectedly show up and rescue the receiver from being attacked by an enemy, after the receiver had started to believe they were alone against this threat.
alternatively, send in " just in the nick of time. " for the sender, having been cornered by an enemy intent on harming them, to be the one being unexpectedly saved by the receiver.

HEROIC INTERVENTION. ( A PROMPT LIST! )
so i was writing this headcanon for one of my characters, and it got me thinking about how some characters are absolutely, to their very core, protectors, and even then they still need protecting! so i made this list which is similar to about five other memes i've made. feel free to add a "reverse" if you so wish! DO NOT ADD TO THIS LIST NOR CLAIM IT AS YOUR OWN. THANK YOU.
FROM THE SENDER TO THE THREAT:
[ TO THE THREAT ]: " is there a problem over here? "
[ TO THE THREAT ]: " can i help you with something? "
[ TO THE THREAT ]: " i think it's time you were leaving. "
[ TO THE THREAT ]: " why don't you and i go outside for a sec? "
[ TO THE THREAT ]: " you wanna tell me why you're hassling my friend? "
[ TO THE THREAT ]: " you better start running before i really get pissed. "
[ TO THE THREAT ]: " i'm sure there's a rational explanation behind you upsetting this person? "

[ TO THE RECEIVER ]: " it's alright. the others just went out to the car; why don't you join them? i'll handle this. "
[ TO THE RECEIVER ]: " hey, hey… talk to me, huh? what's the matter? you look like you've seen a ghost… who was that? "
[ TO THE RECEIVER ]: " don't be scared. i'm going to take care of this. i promise. "
[ TO THE RECEIVER ]: " you don't need to say anything. just nod if you want me to kick them out, okay? "
[ TO THE RECEIVER ]: " you're alright. i'm right here, don't worry. and they'll be gone before you can blink, that's another promise. "
ACTIONS:
[ HAND ]: sender, having seen the receiver's encounter with the threat, gently takes the receiver's hand to assure them they aren't alone.
[ INTERVENE ]: sender wordlessly steps in between the receiver and the threat, facing the threat while shielding the receiver from them.
[ BLOCK ]: sender steps in between the receiver and the threat, this time facing the receiver while turning their back to the threat and blocking them from the receiver's line of sight.
[ BACK ]: sender places a protective and gentle hand on the receiver's back, preparing to guide them away from the threat.
[ DOOR ]: sender firmly but politely insists that the threat leave the building, and escorts them out of the door.
[ EXIT ]: sender physically catches hold of the threat and drags them away from the receiver, and outside of the building.
[ PUSH ]: sender places a careful hand on the threat to keep them at arm's length, and steps forward again to give the receiver more space between them and the threat.
[ SHOVE ]: sender runs over and forcefully shoves the threat back and away from the receiver.
[ SPACE ]: sender pushes between the receiver and the threat and begins to move forward, invading the threat's personal space as both a means of intimidation and a way of getting them away from the receiver.
[ DIVERT ]: sender arrives behind the threat and gains their attention, distracting them from the receiver so as to give them time to leave the area.
[ CLEAR ]: the sender firmly and clearly tells the threat that they are no longer allowed in the premises nor anywhere near the receiver.
[ ARM ]: sender wraps a protective arm around the receiver and guides them away from the threat and out of the premises.
[ PUNCH ]: the sender, having seen the receiver's reaction to the threat and the threat's lack of consideration, moves forward and punches the threat in the face.

THE MANY MEANINGS OF "HEY.": A PROMPT LIST.
i often have these ideas that have no real origin, but i can actually tell you precisely why my brain wanted this: i was listening to "hey, soul sister" by train on a loop and i got thinking abt the fact that we really do just say "hey" for so many reasons. and i wanted to make that your thought of the evening! so happy november, bon appetit, wrap up warm, DO NOT ADD TO THIS LIST, and enjoy your writings!
[ GREETING ]: sender says "hey" as a greeting to the receiver.
[ ATTENTION ]: sender, having just noticed something strange or remarkable, calls for the receiver to get their attention.
[ REASSURE ]: in a bid to steady the unsettled receiver, the sender lightly says "hey" to help them calm down.
[ ANGER ]: the sender sharply snaps "hey" at the receiver, clearly angry about something the receiver has just done or had done in the past.
[ IDEA ]: having been presented with a predicament, the sender suddenly unravels a solution, introducing it to the receiver by saying "hey…".
[ GUILT ]: having just done something that they know the receiver won't be pleased with, the sender sheepishly greets them once they arrive to see the damage.
[ GOSSIP ]: the sender turns to face the receiver conspiratorially, clearly eager to share some new gossip with them.
[ URGENT ]: the sender rushes to the preoccupied receiver, desperately shouting "hey!" to get them to focus on a far more pressing matter.
[ SOOTHE ]: after finding the clearly distressed receiver, the sender pulls them into a careful embrace, gently murmuring "hey…" to try and soothe them.
[ SMILE ]: the sender (who hasn't been smiling up until they actually see the receiver in front of them) lights up with a smile as they greet the receiver.
[ TEARS ]: the sender greets the receiver while very clearly in tears.
[ FAKE ]: alternatively, the sender (who has just been crying in private) hastily wipes away their tears and tries to greet the receiver casually (to varying degrees of success).
[ WARNING ]: when the receiver begins to say things about subjects that are off-limits to the sender, the latter gives them a warning by saying "hey…".
[ LAUGH ]: having found the receiver to be decidedly unhappy, the sender lightly catches their attention before doing something to make them laugh, or at the very least, grin.
[ PROTEST ]: after the receiver does or says something that the sender deems to be unfair, the sender tries to exact justice by saying "hey!".
[ BREATHLESS ]: having clearly just sprinted down to the receiver, the sender tries to catch their breath while greeting them.
[ SAVE ]: after just saving the receiver's life in a very heroic fashion, the sender smoothly greets them while helping them escape.
[ FLIRT ]: the sender meets the receiver in a social setting, and attempts to flirt with them with the very traditional pick-up line: "hey.".
[ APOLOGY ]: the sender, having recently done something that hurt or upset the receiver, reunites with them and addresses the elephant in the room by greeting them with a sincerely apologetic tone.
[ AWKWARD ]: after a particularly rough first encounter, the sender meets the receiver again, and awkwardly greets them with more than a touch of embarrassment.
[ GENTLE ]: having found the receiver in an emotionally compromised position, the sender closes the door and approaches them carefully, gently saying "hey…" to try and get them to communicate what has upset them.
[ HARD ]: preparing to deliver what they both know will be bad news, the sender tries to prepare the receiver by quietly greeting them in a solemn tone.
[ WAKEN ]: walking into the receiver's bedroom, the sender gently shakes their shoulder to waken them, and whispers "hey." to encourage the process along.
[ WHISPER ]: the sender gently whispers "hey" to the receiver to discreetly get their attention without drawing the attention of others.

YOU'VE NEVER SEEN HANA JUMP UP FASTER than when dox asks questions like this. she hasn't been to the market on 42 in a hot minute. not for lack of opportunity or free will, but simply because she has a habit of dragging back trouble when she leaves on her own. besides, IT'S MORE FUN to go with dox, something d.va would never admit even with A GUN TO HER HEAD.

SHE LOOKS DOWN WITH MOUTH OPEN, likely to ask, " what's wrong with what i'm wearing? " , a sentiment immediately ruined by the general grease and grime clinging to SPARKLY PINK SATIN, splashed with mud atop it all. the heel of one of her shoes is broken and missing entirely, for that matter, and her ankles are red where the silver straps had dug in all night — MOUTH SHUTS AGAIN, this time into a scowl. she's sure she's made no SECRET of her anger, but it feels childish even in the moment, which ONLY MAKES IT WORSE. it isn't HIS fault she ignored literally every warning handed to her and trusted the shadiest guy on the block. he could have arguably been much worse.
but still, HE'S AN ASS.
nobody said people were going to be nice here, something she tries to KEEP IN MIND before giving the type of attitude that would land her on the streets. hana doubts he has anything particularly stylish at all — in fact she doesn't think she's seen a single stylish aspect to the place since she got here — but the dress itches, the shoes hurt, and hana needs AT LEAST ONE THING to go smoothly today. the dress is uncomfortable, the room is uncomfortable, and the situation is a degree above absolutely desolate.
after a moment of deliberation, hana all but rips off her heels, tucking them under her arm with a gentleness discordant while standing. " sure. thanks. "

teeth catch inner cheek, mender investigating the BRAT in front of him - during those several hours prior he'd thought nothing of inciting FEAR, because HOW DARE those with FREEDOM take it for GRANTED---the undercity isn't like an age-restricted nightclub, or a private yellow-taped scene, IT'S A MASS GRAVE.
ㅤㅤ& since her first step through, she's died here.
JUST LIKE ALL THE OTHER GRIMESUCKERS TRAPPED - only, most of them just don't REALIZE it yet. THIS is all they're ever going to get - & while some may be CONTENT with that, it's because IT'S BEEN THEIR WHOLE LIVES---but here's a kid who thought herself DIFFERENT, who maybe didn't believe the HORROR STORIES, who thought she'd wake up in her own bed by this time--- but the SLUMRATS find sick, satisfied HUMOR in people like her getting stuck ; make light of their levels, & pay the cost. dox didn't HAVE to chase her around, she'd find out soon enough the weight of the city would soon hit her - ㅤㅤthough she'll realize eventually it's not HIS people that are monsters, ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤbut HERS.
there's some time of silence. dox, leant against the counter with arms folded, releases his cheek & unfurls an arm, making some vague gesture by rolling his wrist ;

IT HAPPENS FAR TOO FAST — though nothing really GOES TO SPEED in the undercity. her father once told her that any healthy person learns at least one new thing a day — and to her credit, D.VA'S REALLY TRYING HERE. still, THE KNIFE THROWS A WRENCH IN HER PLANS — — and sticks right into... well, arguably the best person to be stabbed in such a situation, but certainly not the right one.
" dox—! "
ohhh, she never should have left unarmed — if dox decides to scold her to high hell and the level above that, she'll take it without complaint. it's not the first time she's seen him injured, but it's the first time that it's really her fault. SURE, HE'S A PUNK, HE'D'VE HAD IT COMING REGARDLESS -- but she's still a born-and-raised softie at heart.
adrenaline has long since started to course through her veins, muscles tight and limbs brought close, but the ONLY WORSENING CONDITIONS turn the pressure up. FUCK THIS. d.va falls back to the stances she's been trying to copy off of dox for MONTHS, playing back instructions in REAL-TIME ; feet apart, hands out, arms in. in the scarce few seconds between the DUMB GUTTERFUCK reaching for his knife back and what's sure to be an AWFUL SPOUT OF BLOOD, she lunges.
IT'S NOT IDEAL, but for those few seconds, they're equally unarmed, and that's the closest anyone here is going to get to A FAIR FIGHT. very graciously luckily for her, the man on the other end is relying on a blade FOR A REASON, and he buckles far easier than he should've. DOX HAD BEEN TEACHING HER MORE than where to put her hands and feet, after all; a good sense of observation was as important as anything, and if you're going to walk on an injured leg, it would do one well to hide their gait.
they hit the ground together hard, and hana tries not to act like SHE CARES TOO MUCH while digging nails into his scalp and ripping like she's back in grade school, other hand fighting through both of his to try and smash the first SOFT PART OF HIS FACE she can find. IT DOESN'T MATTER TO HER what dox does from here, so long as it isn't "die--" which is only, like, 64% a concern of hers after such a long time — BUT SHE'LL BE DAMNED if somebody stabs him and doesn't get it back threefold from SOMEONE around here.

" IT COMES OUT BLEAKER THAN SHE MEANS IT, not that the city isn't less than awful -- SHE CALLS IT THE UNDERSHITTY for a reason. STILL, she amends -- " i don't know what i expected it to be, but not... this. it's embarrassing to think about how naive i've been in the past, which i guess is the biggest sign of having learned anything. "
