No matter how much she’d told herself she’d be ready when she saw him, it took her a moment to take him in. He still looked the same as the last time she’d seen him, before her parent’s death. She smiled when he greeted her and walked closer to hug him. 

She pulled back after a brief moment. “It’s been ages! How are you, director sahab?” She asked, a wide smile on her face.

[text] Okay, honestly, I finished the term last week, but I was taking time to sleep and eat and breathe.

Nikita Thapar has maintained little contact with most of her ‘Sholay’ co-workers, since law school is keeping her busy. Despite this, she is closest to Anahita Talwar and Nidhi Kapoor, and while one is her elder sister in all but blood, the other is her partner in crime. Surprisingly, she formed a strong bond with Sameera Singh when the MD started attending the same university as her. She is most definitely not pleased to be asked to join Armaan Varma’s project, since they had a almost there relationship during ’Sholay’, and seeing him will only bring up bad memories.

“I think it’s because we’re so freaked out before the submission, that we tend to adopt a one-track mentality, which is why we manage to finish the damn thing, hai na? Plus there’s that whole thing ki if I don’t finish this, my supervisor, teacher, professor ya whatever will just,”

“Anyway, I think intro ke liya that was thoda lamba. I haven’t seen you before this, so... I’m Nikita. And you?”

Why is it only ever easy to fill up a blank page when you have to submit it within the hour?

“Isn’t your budget is always low, babe?”

“And anyway, I have a super quick solution to that. Make them fire me, and you can have my salary. And like ten thousand per day or something from me personally. I would rather sit for my bar exam tomorrow than be here right now. And you know how unprepared I am for it.”

These numbers are so not working out… They really need to up my budget.

“I’m sure being on the big screen encourages all the aunties to find you through sorts of oodpatang ways. Stop that, toh then I think the rishtas will stop, haina?”

“Lekin other than your overactive love life... Kaise ho? It’s been forever since I saw you in person, na?”

The amount of aunty’s wanting me to meet their daughters and marry them seem to be growing by the second. Seriously, how do they even find me?

Neha reached forward and caressed her older sister's cheek and nodded, "Don't be dumb, Niki," She said, not feeling the need to be as gentle as the others were being. "Do you see anyone else here?" She asked, softly, "I flew all the way from Dubai to Bombay in less than six hours, okay." She mumbled, "I wouldn't do that for anyone else but you." She said, looking at Nikita and holding onto her hand tightly, tears making their way down her cheeks. "Stupid." She muttered, the accompanying laugh, a broken sound.

Nikita had almost fallen back asleep when Nidhi spoke. Her eyes opened and after taking a few moments so focus, she looked at the set designer's tired face. Her eyes then moved to Sameera and she smiled weakly at the two. "Really?" She asked, "Why?" She questioned, her eyes feeling heavy again. 

Then, her sister spoke, and Nikita chuckled tiredly. "Accha?" She asked, looking at Neha. "Achaanak itna pyaar?" She croaked out, a tired smile on her face. The question was directed at the other three in the room too, but she knew that they may not reply. Her eyes flickered to Anahita and Nikita's heart tightened with the look in her eyes. Quickly, she looked away, looking back at Neha. "Don't call me stupid, stupid." She mumbled, taking in a deep breath and her eyes closing on their own, having stayed open for longer than they could.

Forcing them open again, her eyes went from Nidhi, to Sameera and then to Anahita. "Stay?" She asked quietly.

Hearing Nikita question why they were all there in her hospital room was like another stab of guilt. She couldn’t speak for the othersbut she knew she had let her sister down by not being there as soon as her memory had returned. She stayed away, waiting for Nikita to make the first move and this felt like a move further away. She inched slightly closer, a smile on her face as she stood at the foot of her bed.

Anahita chose to remain quiet, the other girls were answering Nikita’s questions and that was really all they should say given the younger girl’s state. They needed her to know, to understand that they were all there for her. That they’d always be there for her. She managed to keep the smile on her face even though her insides were brought down with questions as to what led her little sister to this state.

Are you?

[She looks up at Anahita, tears in her eyes, squeezing the other woman's hand weakly.]

Okay.

But I’m right here Niki..

[She sits down and clasps her hand]

I promise you, I’m not going anywhere. I love you, and I know I’ve done a crap job of showing it the last little while but I want you to know and believe that I’m here, always.

I--I--I don't know what to tell you, Anahita.

I--I don't know. I miss you. I.. I still do.

I’m not lying to you Nikita. We’ve all been worried sick about you. I know—I for one, haven’t really been there for you and I know apologizing won’t help but, I am sorry, I love you, you have to know that.

Scared…guilt, frustration, a lot of mixed feelings but I think fear surpassed it all because, we couldn’t—I—losing you..

[She takes a small sip to soothe her throat and then sighs]
