i get so damn sad thinking about ningguang sometimes. intimacy and bearing her soul to another person are terrifying to her. she's lonely even surrounded by as many people as she is, but she'd rather deal with the loneliness of standing atop the world than any other alternative. she's already faced the repercussions of letting someone get that close once -- she's not about to do it again

talking to sae has me thinking about ningguang and in specific, this voiceline from keqing:

we do work together, but we couldn't be more opposite personality-wise. to her, liyue harbor is nothing more than a marketplace, and she'll do anything as long as it makes money for her. doesn't she have any principles? hmm, or maybe turning a profit IS her principle?

the way she navigates liyue as if she's playing a game of chess. you control pieces that can move in various directions and the goal is for a checkmate. sometimes, you can outwit your opponent in knowing how those pieces move and luring them into situations. other times, all it takes is knowing how to play your pieces well regardless of how your opponent moves theirs. success stems from an understanding the game you're playing inside and out, knowing how to react to certain moves and work around complications.

that's how she approaches her roles as both the tianquan and a businesswoman. regardless of what the people of liyue say, she's not all knowing or all seeing. she's just a woman at the end of the day. she can only know the extent of what her informants tell her. what makes her powerful is the way she knows people and human nature. similar to knowing how all the pieces on a chess board can move, ningguang understands what can make people react, what can drive people to action to begin with -- both legally and illegally.

similar to chess, she can have her opponents back themselves into a spot where she can act or she can react with a countermove regardless of her opponent's actions. and of course, she always seeks a checkmate and a win.

oh, ms ningguang, i adore you. i'm relistening to certain voicelines and !! the way she supports the women / feminine aligned folks of liyue ( even if it goes mostly unnoticed ) brings me no shortage of joy🥺

ningguang makes me so damn sad because she keeps her heart and her memories so damn guarded. even among the friends who have known her for decades like yelan and beidou, she's always so careful with what she lets slip out.

the saddest part? this is the result of trust issues from her youth. she used to be someone who would wear her heart on her sleeve, albeit naively trusting of others. but oh, did she learn how cruel human beings can be. too many friends, lovers, and ( potential ) business partners took advantage of her generosity and her skillsets and left her with absolutely nothing. she was stuck trying to rebuild and just survive time and time again, to the point where she could only truly trust herself.

that belief in herself and her abilities has gotten her far and no one can ever claim to have the upper hand over her... but don't let her fool you. it's lonely from her perch in the clouds.

head empty except for thoughts about how ningguang being connected to both stone and water. the symbolism of the stone, unmoving and impenetrable, being shaped and changed by storms / water time and time again. and how it’s reflected in her relationships with yelan and beidou, who have been around for a long time and have slowly chipped at her walls ( even if it isn’t seen so clearly on the surface, their respective influences are there )

oh, the idea of ningguang not being her birth name, but the name she gave herself as she started to gain influence in liyue. it was her way to cutting off her past to be able to start over and grow into the woman she was becoming -- while still honoring the path she took to get where she is. ningguang is a combination of her parents' names ( which will eventually get edited in here when i do more research into chinese naming mechanics ).

the name serves as a symbol of starting anew, of fierce determination in the worst of times. and in that way, it's something she will pass off to the next generation as she will one day hand over the title of tianquan
