Kujou Tenn: I was just thinking of texting you, Riku. I wanted to tell you to not get cold, since a lot of the filming was outside today

Nanase Riku: I took a bath as soon as I got home, so I’ll be fine! What about Tenn-nii? Are you wearing warm clothes? 

Kujou Tenn: I am. I’m wearing the matching ghost hoodies Momo-san gave all of us actors today.

Nanase Riku: Aaah~! It’s so cute with the patch of the ghost that shows up in the drama

Kujou Tenn: It might be good promotion for the drama as well. I’ll be sure to bring mine with me. 

Nanase Riku: Yayーー！ Can we take a picture with just the two of us, too,,,? I won’t post it on social media!

Kujou Tenn: Do you want to take one?

Nanase Riku: Yeah….

Nanase Riku:

Kujou Tenn: Sure. I’d also like that.

Nanase Riku:

Kujou Tenn: But please don't get too excited and call me "Tenn-nii" on set again.

Nanase Riku: I managed to just barely hold back today!!

Kujou Tenn: You didn’t. You already said as much as “Tenn-ni—”. 

Nanase Riku: Eh~! Wasn’t it more like “Tenn-ni”?

Kujou Tenn: That’s not that much of a difference, is it?

Nanase Riku: But I was fine because Tenn-nii covered me

Kujou Tenn: But I won’t be able to do that every time

Nanase Riku: I think Tenn-nii could do it! Let’s try to recreate that one time 

Nanase Riku: (door opening) Me: “I’m done changing!”

Kujou Tenn: I guess we’re doing this now…

Kujou Tenn: (clack)

“I’m done, too”

Nanase Riku: Me: “Wow! Your ghost costume suits you so well today too! That’s just like Tenn-ni”

Kujou Tenn: “It feels like I’m in heaven, being able to appear in a drama that provides such wonderful costumes”*

Nanase Riku: Amazing! You even managed to recreate it perfectly, Tenn-nii! With this, I’ll be fine

Kujou Tenn: Somehow I’m also beginning to think it’ll be fine.

Nanase Riku:

Kujou Tenn: Seriously. We were shooting such a sad scene with you today, Riku, but rabbit-chatting with you like this, it feels weird.

Nanase Riku: Was my acting good!? I wanted to ask Tenn-nii about it 

Kujou Tenn: It was. Especially the scene where the bellboy you play prays to the wish granting tree

Nanase Riku: The one where the bellboy went to pray because ghost Tenn-nii’s body kept getting harder to see each day, and he worried he’d disappear…

Kujou Tenn: Yes. 

The scene where he begs the tree with a mix of sadness, confusion and impatience, saying “Please don’t take my friend away”. It captivated everyone on set.

Nanase Riku: When the ghost noticed he was going to disappear, he confessed to the bellboy, “You were the first friend I ever had. Maybe that is why l feel so reluctant to let go of you.”

Nanase Riku: There might be many things you only truly notice after you lose them, but I don’t want to feel that way again. I want to treasure everything, without suddenly losing any of it. I feel like that’s why I gave it my all in the scene where I go to pray.

Kujou Tenn: We got to see Riku give his all, eh.

Nanase Riku: That’s right. Because I was able to act with Tenn-nii!

Nanase Riku: I can’t forget Tenn-nii’s face. When you opened up about your feelings to me, you looked lonely, yet so happy to have discovered we care for each other. I was moved by how one expression could convey so many emotions.

Kujou Tenn: Even though the ghost had always been lonely and playing pranks on humans, when he made a friend for the first time, his lingering attachment to the world faded and he started to disappear. But he didn’t want to leave his friend, either. 

Kujou Tenn: It was a difficult scene, but I’m glad to hear that from you, Riku. 

Nanase Riku: I’m happy~. I like talking about acting with Tenn-nii

Kujou Tenn: Me too.

Nanase Riku: If there really was a tree that could grant wishes, what would you wish for, Tenn-nii?

Kujou Tenn: I wonder. I might not wish for anything Because I want to make the important things come true by myself

Nanase Riku: I see… That sounds like like Tenn-nii

I wanna hear Tenn-nii’s wish though

Kujou Tenn: Then, one thing

Nanase Riku: What is it!?

Kujou Tenn: I wish for Riku to accept my invitation. 

Nanase Riku: I’d accept any invitation from Tenn-nii though!?!?!?!? 

Kujou Tenn: I’m glad. There’s a donuts shop that recently opened near me, so I’d like to go with you, Riku

Kujou Tenn: What’s your wish, Riku?

Nanase Riku: I wish for Tenn-nii’s wish to come true!!!

Nanase Riku: My next day off is next Saturday… What about you, Tenn-nii? If it’s alright with you, we could go on that day… 

Kujou Tenn: What a coincidence. I’m off that day, too. My wish came true right away, huh

Nanase Riku: Yay!!!! The tree I just saw growing at the dorm must be granting wishes too!!! I’ll go say thank you!!!!!

Kujou Tenn: That made me laugh. Make sure you don’t get cold, alright

* TL note: It's a play on words. As you probably know, the kanji for Tenn’s name (天 ) means heaven, which is why, when Riku almost calls him Tenn-nii, Tenn covers it up by supposedly “finishing” Riku’s sentence with a saying that involves the word heaven. Riku’s “-ni” becomes the Japanese grammatical particle “ni” in that case, so it covers the tracks of Riku’s mishap almost perfectly.

what’s up guys. it’s me. guy who does literary analysis for fun. here to tell you that riku, tenn and haruka are all foils of each other in a horrible nightmare triangle

“In any narrative, a foil is a character who contrasts with another character, typically, a character who contrasts with the protagonist, in order to better highlight or differentiate certain qualities of the protagonist.”

some examples before i start: dr. frankenstein and his creature (frankenstein), mary and elizabeth (pride and prejudice), macbeth and banquo (macbeth), draco and harry (harry potter)

so, typically a foil character analysis starts with that the characters have in common - they usually have some sort of common origin or inciting incident from where their choices diverge to make good contrast.

so, riku, tenn and haruka are all teenage centers of popular idol groups who have trauma caused by the same guy: kujo takamasa. this is a great common origin!

first contrast: personalities

riku is kind and bubbly with no intention to change his personality for the sake of the cameras

tenn acts kind and gentle for the cameras, but is actually more harsh and generally angry than he appears

haruka acts rude and brash, with no intention to change for the cameras but with underlying kindness and innocence

so, they have three variants on personality and hiding for the cameras or not: tenn situationally shows kindness (like riku) or anger (like haruka), making him a mixture between the two who also contrasts the others’ intents.

second contrast: their approaches to their fans

riku takes from his fans in the form of feeding off of their emotions and influencing them, whether or not he intends it

tenn gives everything of himself to the fans, valuing their feelings over his own and his health, and asserts this approach as the only correct one

haruka closes himself off from the fans (at least initially) and looks down on them as simply a tool to be used ands manipulated

these three approaches contrast each other really well. riku and tenn contrast by being different approaches to the same goal, with their fights being less about who’s right and more about which approach will work. tenn doesn’t really believe in the effectiveness of any approach besides his own, which is partially kujo’s fault. the contrast between the two is also exemplified by the way they’re introduced, with tenn’s introduction being him working himself to death while sick to keep a promise to fans, and riku being immediately shown to have a strong emotional impact on others even when he’s somewhat unwell.

haruka contrasts both of these. him being introduced after the audience has been seeing riku and tenn’s approaches is a bit of whiplash - all you’ve seen is characters who have the fans in mind for everything, and then comes this guy who doesn’t seem to value them. his closed off bad boy style is the complete opposite of riku, who is very vulnerable with fans when it is called for. haruka’s choice to not prioritize fans is also a contrast to tenn, who values them over himself. that connection is doubled by both of them being taught their views by kujo.

(spoilery) they converge a bit more eventually, with riku learning to better harness his innate emotional impact, tenn learning to respect riku’s approach and take care of himself more, and haruka realizing that he does actually care about the fans. but the way they act and reach these developments are still very different.
