Not gonna lie, as a brown girl who works out, it's cool to see a muscular brown-skinned Nya. I honestly don't mind if she's taller than Jay, because sometimes that is literally the way things are. However, people pointing out the underlying racism in some Jaya portrayals are right. Making Jaya some weak, stick-thin white guy while Nya is the tall, muscular, strong one isn't the empowering thing people think it is. It definitely leans into racist stereotypes. Black and brown women have historically been masculinized as a way to deny them their humanity, and have been portrayed as "predatory" or "promiscuous" towards "helpless" white men. Why can't Jay and Nya both be muscular and strong? They both are ninja, after all. I personally headcanon Jay as a brown guy who is also muscular. Honestly, I'm just tired of the portrayal of Jay as some useless, weak, pathetic white guy. I don't understand why some fans are so obsessed with the dynamic of a capable, intelligent, strong brown woman with a white guy who is just there to be saved rather than to be her equal.

Nya is not only taller, but also way buffer and darker than Jay! Also, Jay gets pegged! Yup, that's right! Nya is the #Girlboss of the relationship and Jay is the #Malewife!!!

Nya is the smartest person in the world, and Jay is an impractical moron! When Jay does engineering, it's stupid, messy, and nonsensical! In fact, Jay is practically worthless without Nya!

sorry I just really get annoyed by the take that "Cole is irrevelant" like obviously the show is trying to move on to the new main characters, you can't just expect your main character with a complete arc to get much screen-time anymore. Not to mention there is still something with Cole to be answered (the Wu journey). Wait patiently man. This is what Jay fans suffered for two straight seasons, I think you'll be fine if this happened for like maybe half of one.

this is genuinely all of the 11-min era seasons you're talking about, which has problematic writing for more characters than just Jay lmfao. But yes this was horrible for his character in general and I can see why you dislike him then.

honestly I just genuinely think Jay is annoying asf. No actual shade to people who like him, I don’t even really hate him, but goddamn is he hard to watch. I feel like a lot of it comes from the voice directors making Micheal Adamthwaite (I think that’s how you spell it) speak his lines with a higher pitch in the later seasons. It makes everything he says sound whiny regardless of what comes out of his mouth. Yes I know it’s a kid show, but there are far better ways to make a good comedic relief without resorting to “oh no I just peed my pants again 😖” or “bro bro goo goo 🎵🎵” or some shit. It becomes an active hindrance on whatever scene they’re trying to execute.

This logic goes for a lot more characters, including male lmfao. Scott, Benthomar, Unagami, Kataru, the MOTM trio (Plundar and them all, forgot their names lol). It's side characters getting no spotlight, not specifically females. Also let's not act like we quite literally have 3 female characters in the main cast, a HUGE improvement from before when it was only Nya. Not to mention, some kind of focus with Jordana soon (I guarantee, no way she gets abandoned just like that.)

I think Ninjago doesn't care about a lot of their female characters. They only care when they're ninjas or are love interests. But then again most of those characters are abandoned after a season like Vania and Skylor.
