Since Homestuck is trending again because of the Spindlehorse Pilot, I did just want to take a moment to remember “Usagi” Buzinkai, a really talented composer who wrote one of the most iconic and reoccurring melodies in Homestuck, Doctor.

Usagi was a brilliant musician and composer who tragically passed away in 2018. She was early in her transition at the time of her passing, and I was unable to find any confirmation of the name she preferred. I will be referring to her using her online moniker “Usagi” since we don’t know how she felt about the name she was given at birth, or if she wanted to change it.

She wrote many of the most beloved songs for Homestuck, as well as the soundtrack for the game Spelunkey.

Usagi was a part of the LGBTQ community, and talked about her experiences regarding her trans and ace identities openly and with joy.

Usagi’s music deeply impacted many people. Homestuck as a whole would not be the same without the iconic songs that she wrote for it. Her music influenced Toby Fox, who remixed Buzinkai’s song “Doctor” and sites the song as a major turning point in his growth as a musician.

I didn’t even know that she was the composer or that she had passed until a few years ago.

I was really upset to learn that someone who contributed so much to something I loved had passed and, in my opinion, never really received the wide-spread recognition she deserved for her art. My goal in making this post is to try and educate people who were unaware of her artistic contributions to Homestuck. I hope to honor her memory, as well as the beauty and music she brought to the world.

I’ll leave you with a really lovely quote from her regarding accepting and discovering one’s identity:

“…There's nothing like that first time stepping out as yourself, talking about who you are meant to be without fear. The world might come knocking, but when it does, knock back louder and say it loudly and proudly;

"This is my life. This is who I am right now. I won't wear a mask for you."”

black characters and fandom oftentimes don’t mix, especially when said fandoms are predominantly white. black characters are often mischaracterized negatively, reduced to only their positive attributes (so white people don’t feel threatened talking about the negative traits of a black character) or outright ignored. this behavior is amplified if the character is explicitly neurodivergent or implied to be neurodivergent

in fandom spaces, it’s common for people to project onto characters. whether it be their trauma or personal experiences or anything similar. this happens, especially, when the character is is a white male. since the character is white, and since fandom is predominantly white, that’s what they’ll base themselves upon. this isn’t anything new. but their black counterparts are not treated with the same grace

fandom treats black people addressing bigotry in their community as a threat; we’re killjoys intent on destroying the escapism they’ve built for themselves. to them, black neurodivergence is threatening because inherently, black people are threatening— they haven’t yet unpacked their internalized (and open) racism and they think of black people as a monolith more than individual members of a community. black characters acting aggressively or strangely or having characteristics and traits similar to those underneath the neurodivergence umbrella is seen as threatening, violent, scary. white neurodivergence is painted over with a coat of innocence, similar to how it is in the real world

the unofficial homestuck collection is still available for download. it's right there when you google it

vivzie is the executive producer of the show. she isn't listed as a writer, artist/animator, or director

as executive producer, vivzie is presumably is in charge of hiring people, but notably there is a voice director separate from her (richard horvitz) that will most likely be in charge of casting

the director is skye henwood; she is an animation director and writer at spindlehorse

the hiveswap act 3 team and the show team are largely made up of different people (there are exceptions ofc such as andrew presumably overseeing both things because it's xeir story), their productions likely don't affect each other

we are getting more hiveswap news in october

the homestuck website is still being worked on (quote from james on july 1st: "I’m happy to announce that we should hopefully be operational again pretty soon, so please stay tuned for that and we’ll keep you updated when it’s finally back up and running.") i could have sworn he named a specific guy who was working on it but i can't find it
