Something You Should Know About Cutting Tools

Cutting tool materials are objects which are used for cutting tools that are later to be used in machining. These are, however, different from punches or knives. The strength and tenacity of cutting tool materials should also be higher than the materials they are cutting. To ensure the correct properties, a variety of materials are used for making cutting tools. High speed steel – One of the most common cutting tool materials, high speed steel has super finishing which reduces friction. During its manufacturing, Nitriding is done to increase resistance against wears. Oxidation in high speed steel decreases friction and chromium electroplating is also done to reduce friction. It has high carbon content and consists of various amounts of tungsten, molybdenum, chromium, vanadium, etc. Each of these increase hardenability, wear resistance, or toughness. The Rockwell hardness is a minimum of 64 HRC at room temperature. Tool steel suppliers in India recommend using high speed steel for milling cutters, saw blades, tool bits, broaches, taps, drills, dies, punches, etc. Properties of high speed steel, such as – wear resistance and hardness are significant for the production of chisel, pocket knives, kitchen knives, files, etc. 

Carbon tool steel – Carbon tool steel cold rolled strips are one of the most commonly used cutting tool materials. It has wide application in several industries. These are used in low speed machining operations and are preferred due to their low cost which in turn reduces the productivity cost. Furthermore, the composition of the plain carbon steel cutting tool is quite simple as opposed to others. It consists of carbon and lesser amounts of magnesium and silicon. It also has other metals such as – V and Cr which are added to change grain size and hardness. High carbon tool steel has the capability to maintain a very sharp cutting edge as well as exhibit resistance against abrasion. Carbon tool steel also has excellent machinability. However, due to this particular property, the cutting tool’s hardness is reduced whenever the temperature reaches 250 degrees Celsius. Thus, despite its low manufacturing cost and affordability, it is not a good choice for applications where high temperatures are required.

Ceramics – Silicon nitride and aluminum oxide are two popularly used ceramics cutting tool materials. Tool steel suppliers in India suggest using this because of its resistance to corrosion and chemically inert property. Ceramics have excessively high corrosive strength and can withstand temperatures up to 1800 degrees Celsius. Therefore, industrial cutting operations which requires high temperatures prefer using ceramics. Another significant factor is speed. The speed of ceramics is approximately ten times faster compared to high speed steel. These also offer an excellent surface finish and do not need any coolant. The friction caused between chip and tool face is relatively low and the heat conductivity is also minimal. 

Cemented carbide tool – Powder metallurgy technique is used for manufacturing cemented carbide tools. It consists of tantalum, tungsten, and titanium carbide with cobalt acting as a binding agent. These have excellent hardenability, robustness, and toughness. Besides, these can withstand very high temperatures and are therefore often used in industrial operations where high temperatures are required. They do not melt or soften below 1000 degrees Celsius. Low cobalt tools are used for finishing products whereas high cobalt tools are preferred for rough cuts. The hardness of Cemented carbide tools is up to HRC 90. The cutting speed range varies between 60-200 m/minute. All these properties make it an absolute favorite among Tool Steel Suppliers in India.
