The Meeting on the Turret Stairs

(inspired by Frederic William Burton’s painting)

The artwork shows a bittersweet farewell between two forbidden lovers: Hans, a nobleman, and Henry, his bodyguard. Their love is not allowed, and this is their final moment together before Henry walks to his death. The scene is full of unspoken emotion, told only through posture and touch it’s quiet, tragic, and deeply romantic.

I spent a really long time working on this piece. I was never quite satisfied especially with the shadows, lighting, and colors. I kept tweaking, reworking, and starting over. But now it’s finally finished… 33h 30min. It took a lot of time and effort, but I think it was worth it.

As some of you might recognize, it was inspired by the famous painting “The Meeting on the Turret Stairs”. My intention wasn’t to recreate the original one-to-one, but to reinterpret it in a way that would fit Hans and Henry subtle, emotional, and with a quiet intensity.

Their love is not allowed, and this is their final moment together before Hildebrand walks to his death. The scene is full of unspoken emotion, told only through posture and touch it’s quiet, tragic, and deeply romantic.

I was so moved by this story that I had to interpret it through my Hans & Henry universe.

This is my first sketch “The Meeting on the Turret Stairs” reimagined in my style.
