D.va progress!! Not bad for only 6 hours~ I even did all of this on Twitch, which makes me think that the speed has something to do with how I couldn’t distract myself doing something else. Less that 2 weeks to Goldnova D: but at least I have plenty of backup costumes if these don’t work out.

Cosplay goals, or resolutions, for 2017

Make mockups for things I’m unsure of (which I do sometimes now, but not nearly as often as I should)

Use store-bought patterns where possible/necessary

If the stitching isn’t accurate to 2mm, unpick and redo (same as what I have to do for school, it’s a high standard but I think it’s worthwhile)

Learn to make props with foam

Post consistently on social media and YouTube

Do more/improve at photoshoots, both as model and photographer

Enter a competition at every convention I attend (this will not be a strict rule, as stuff happens and it won’t always be realistic)

Enter every costume I make in competition with a skit (this may be ridiculous, but I think if I’m going to make something and put so much time and money into it, why not make it to competition standard? It’ll be very motivational for me, and having a skit means that I can do more of the “playing” side)

And of course I’d like to improve in overall skill, however I wanted to have some more concrete goals to work on.

Improving at photoshoots is a really big one for me! Whenever I do them I get so awkward and nervous and lose any ability to follow directions. It’s awful! To improve this I think I’ll just need to practice in the mirror more, and just get experience doing them. We’ll see how I go. As far as being a photographer myself goes, I got a beginner DSLR recently and would like to get some skill in that area, mostly just photographing friends’ cosplays. I’m lucky enough to live in an area with a lot of beautiful nature and forests, so I’d like to use that to my advantage. I have 3 shoots planned coming up soon, so look out for those!

Eboshi progress! It looks like a lot but I’m really only halfway there To fix: make the chest bigger (I somehow forgot that men’s patterns don’t really acomadate boobs), change the sleeves on the overcoat so the corners arent sewn, extend the red kimono collar To do: make the 2nd kimono (that will take quite a while as it’s got a lot of decoration and I’ll hand finish the seams), tabi, wig, gun

Here are the costumes I did in 2016! I’d like to start with a massive thanks to the photographers of these pics: Mumei, Trung Do, and Alexemplary, without whom I wouldn’t look nearly as good.

2016 was, overall, bad for everyone and I was no exception. Because of this, I spent a lot of time working on costumes as an escape. I’ve made some pretty impressive things this year (a prime example being Glinda, though it feels years ago that I was working on that), but I definitely feel stuck in a rut of mediocrity. Yes, my costumes look pretty cool at a glance but they’re missing a lot in patterning and technique. Perhaps it’s just that my progress in skill has slowed since my first couple years where I was starting from next to no knowledge of sewing (the skill/perception learning discepancy that artists experience).

Nui makeup test from yesterday! The wig arrived so I just had to – it’s not styled yet though ! I really hope I can get this costume done, but as Brisnova gets closer I’m getting less and less sure. I’ll try to have it wearable by then ! It just maybe won’t be as accurate or detailed as I wanted it to be (not yet, anyway) Also HOLY HECK is this wig long– the ponytails reach my knees ! I’ll likely cut it to waist length when I style it.
