Friend and training partner, Alex Takuma, wins his pro-MMA debut with some out-of-the-box jiu-jitsu. He’s super fun to train with because his game is so unique, and its on full display here.

The super fights from Kasai Pro Invitational in Brooklyn this weekend - Murllo Santana x Craig Jones and Yuri Simeos x Gordon Ryan.
Murilo did a good job of avoiding bottom-leg entanglement and staying away from Jones’ dangerous leglock game but couldn’t progress. While on top, Jones also couldn’t progress. Weird penalty finish that I still don’t quite get, but good tactical battle.
On the other end, Gordon is a beast. I’ve seen Yuri compete in-person before and he outworks and out muscles people with ease. To see the tables turn so completely was shocking.

This is such an incredible breakdown. I love the detail. I have never considered this position very deeply and I should have.

I’m a simple guy, and I like simple concepts. Hopefully, this one sticks. I hate being in body triangle.

Good combo to try as I learn how to pass in nogi (different world than gi) and mess with inside heel hook.

We’ve had some real wrestlers in the morning class, and I’ve made sure to train with them. Very fast and technical, way faster and more technical than I. But, today I got a real takedown. Got a single leg and peaked out the back.
Takedowns are fun.

I think its hard to shoot jiu-jitsu really well. Usually, in order to make it feel impactful and not too niche, the filming feels kind of cliche, like it could be any contact sport being filmed. I think this one of Tanquinho is great, you get the impact but also that flow feeling that is pretty unique to jiu-jitsu.
Also love this one of Bruno Malfacine - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seP9GEeZf6A

The heart. Dear lord. Not to mention he beat some really great grapplers to win this while almost unable to stand. So impressive.

It’s weird to read about Jiu-Jitsu on the New Yorker. I love reading the new Yorker. But, I guess I’m so deep in Jiu-Jitsu that this seems like a pretty shallow read. I wonder how it reads to the non-decade+ BJJ practitioner. Still, cool to see the sport in the New Yorker!

Reilly is fun to train with. He does things you don’t see in BJJ a lot, and thinks a lot about how to apply them. This back step series is one of those things and his tournament win are great validation.

I really liked this fight. So hard to score. I feel like Maia could have clinched it more convincingly with submission attempts at the end of 2 and 3, but Masvidal defense was great. Amazing awareness to ignore the choking hand and focus on the clinch hand.
