Calling all PHP Devs, we got the article for you!
As many of you know our very own Senior Dev @ NMC, codeguy, recently published and released his book Modern PHP! Jam-packed with feature tutorials, practical guides and everything PHP from planning to debugging the book is helpful for anyone eager to learn.
This week, codeguy is back with a new blog post entitled, “Docker for PHP Developers: Efficient Nginx, PHP, and MySQL development environments with Docker,” which can be found on NMC’s blog as well as featured on our social media accounts. The post divulges into the world of Docker.
Never heard of Docker? That’s okay, codeguy is here to help you out!
Check out a small excerpt below!
“Docker is the best of both worlds. Whereas Vagrant is a tool primarily concerned with hardware virtualization, Docker is more concerned with process isolation. Both Vagrant and Docker achieve the same goals for developers—they create environments to run applications in isolation. Docker does so with more efficiency and portability.“
To read more about Docker, its features and “how to” help for application building, check out the full article, here!

“Even today the transition from Chapel Hill, anchored by North Carolina’s flagship public university, into downtown Carrboro is virtually seamless. And although the charming college town is more buttoned-up than its free-spirited neighbor, both towns share a love of live music, a range of new drinking spots, and sophisticated dining options that belie the area’s youthful atmosphere.“
Check out this great article posted today, May 27, 2015, in the New York Times entitled “36 Hours in Chapel Hill - Carrboro, N.C.“ for a great look into NMC’s hometown.

Tales from Remote Working
As many of you know, NMC prides itself on fully embracing remote working, giving our team flexibility in where they work from.  Remote working can also open us up to some unique experiences and stories.  This our new series, Tales from Remote Working, and we’ll kick it off with a story from Claire (we’ve changed the names to protect the innocent):
I walked in to Cafe Carolina this morning and a woman stood up and extended her hand and said “You must be Stephanie, I'm Hannah.”  And I was like, “ehh no sorry!”
She was polite and a little embarrassed but she also distinctly looked like she didn't quite believe me. She was SO sure I was Stephanie even though I’d told her I wasn’t. I sat down at the table next to her, a few minutes pass with her continuing to glance in my direction, seemingly wondering why I am lying about not being Stephanie.
Then, the real Stephanie walks in and we are wearing the EXACT same thing.  Whatever identifiers Stephanie gave Hannah - grey north face, black yoga pants, running watch, carrying a brown bag, have brown hair, etc. - matched me perfectly.  Poor Hannah never stood a chance.

I only have one lesson this year, not because I didn’t learn anything (I did, and every talk I heard was amazing), but because this year I was able to see how sticking to that lesson can drastically change things.

Microsoft acquires new startup, Sunrise; NPR's new dailygraphics tool increases ease of chart building
Today at New Media Campaigns, Microsoft's new moves in acquiring startups  such as calendar app, Sunrise, has generated quite a buzz here within the NMC team.
Sunrise allows users access to a variety of calendar products and the ability to consolidate calendars for both mobile and desktop usage through iPhone, iPad, Android devices and on the Mac App Store.
In an attempt to reinvent itself, Microsoft has made steps towards purchasing many platforms of competing technology firms. Founded in 2012, Sunrise reportedly was acquired for at least $100 million.

Dailygraphics, a system for developing and deploying code-based content created by NPR's Visual team has recently added a new tool to their rig. The system allowed developers to create and deploy small charts, now has a new feature which allows users to "inject serialized JSON from a Google Spreadsheet onto their page with one line of template code."
So, What?
Now, users of dailygraphics can store their text and data in the same Google Spreadsheet, simplifying the editing process.
As well, the developer has less files to load, as the data is already integrated into the page.

One of the goals of a new website design should absolutely be to ensure that your organization's website has high quality SC because without both a high quality MC and SC, the webpage's Content Quality Score will suffer and the search engine ranking will as well.

Don’t let this happen to your internet
The internet belongs to all of us. It’s an open, fair, democratic place that we’ve all helped to create, together. On February 26, the FCC is going to decide whether to leave the internet in our hands…or whether to turn it over to the cable companies.
You don’t want them to pick the cable companies.
Join everybody on the internet and help the FCC do the right thing.
This is it, guys. We’ve been been fighting this fight together for a long time now. You did a sensationally good job back in September, making 135,343 calls in a single day and shifting the political momentum back toward real internet freedom. You been pulling more and more policymakers—including the president himself—over to the side of internet freedom. We’re almost there. Let’s bring this one home.

Hello everyone,
Three quick bits:
1. A heartbreaking photo by David Gilkey from Liberia shows a 10-year-old suspected to have Ebola (full story here)
2. Doing a lazy stroll around Facebook on Sunday night when I noticed the NYTimes had posted this piece from 2013. I had remembered...
