Physical activities like various ones at the carnival could bring out the competitive sides, especially for two dhampir who saw each other as rivals. It was definitely more of a healthy rivalry, though. It kept them both on their toes. Leighton had noticed the fair had an obstacle course, leading them over to the line before she looked at Noah expectedly. “Do you think they’d allow us to go multiple times in a row?” She raised an eyebrow and laughed. “Maybe we could try best out of three.”
Noah’s competitive side always came out around Leighton, and this fair was teasing plenty of opportunities to win bragging rights. He grinned at her suggestion, glancing at the obstacle course and nodding. “You’re on, but don’t be too disappointed when you lose all three rounds,” he remarked, heading to the starting point to wait in line behind the young teenagers who were giving it a shot. “Can these kids go any faster,” he mumbled out of the side of his mouth to Leighton, watching in amusement as they scrambled up the rope ladder awkwardly.
Finally, it was their turn, and Noah turned to Leighton with one final grin. “Up the odds, maybe? Last to the finish line has to sit in the dunk tank and let the other knock them in.”

Jordan was curious about how much he progressed too. This could be interesting. Usually even the biggest, toughest looking men had trouble hitting the bell. Maybe even an amateur dhampir could then? He was contemplating this hard as he held the mallet, and the attendant of the game was probably growing annoyed. And then Noah mentioned Giselle, and his eyes snapped back over. It was like a switch went off, adrenaline pumping through him. It was like the mention of her was all it took to give him a burst of confidence.
Jordan’s mouth gaped before he stared at the target. He got into position, gripping the handle before he pulled back and swung down onto the pad. And the small little puck zoomed up the tower’s track, the bell dinging and stunning everyone who had stopped to watch.
Noah let out a whoop and patted his friend on the back, his mouth turned upward at the stunned look of the attendant. “He’ll take the largest stuffed animal you’ve got,” he said to the open-mouthed teen, before turning back to Jordan. “See? I had no doubts you could do that, your training has really evolved these past few weeks.” Noah could pat himself on the back for some of that, but not all - Jordan’s attitude towards his dhampir responsibilities must’ve risen in the ranks as his relationship with Giselle became more serious.
Noah motioned for Jordan to take the plush toy from the attendants hesitant grasp, and turned in the direction of the fair. “Well, that was quite the show,” Noah smirked. “Giselle really brings out the... passion in you.” He smiled at his roommate, happy for his relationship. “I guess we could celebrate with a treat. A SMALL one, though,” he warned. Noah usually didn’t partake in sweets, especially the fried ones that lined the stalls, but he was in an unusually good mood today. What could go wrong?

Noah had been trying to be uplifting, convincing Jordan that he had the capabilities to beat the game. “I… I’m a dhampir,” he repeated, nodding his head several times as if to pump himself up. “I can beat this. For sure. Definitely.” Regardless of whether or not Jordan was convincing himself, he still took the mallet. Jordan tried to get into position, only to notice his roommate take a big step back, as if to bolt out of the way.
Noah was just encouraging him but now he was acting like he expected the mallet to go flying to anywhere but the target. Jordan gave him a look as if to say dude, come on. He looked back at the button, only to pause and glance back at Noah. “… Are we going with like… full strength or…?” He asked in a hushed whisper.
Noah caught the look, and guilt crept up on him. He believed in his roommate, sure! Just... he was deciding to be extra precautious. “Full strength,” Noah said with a shrug, glancing around at the fair. Most Lennox residents were used to a little extraordinary display of energy or strength, so he doubted anyone would look twice. Plus, he was curious about how much Jordan had progressed since he finally started occasionally joining in on Noah’s training sessions. “Pretend Giselle is around,” Noah said slyly, his eyebrows raising with a smile. “Win her the biggest freaking toy they have.”

“Noah!” Ela exclaimed from afar. She ran over to him and waved. “You’re Noah, right? You guard Reuben’s sister, right?” The brunette asked him.
She smiled at him. “Sorry, I don’t mean to be rude. Do you know where I could find him, Reuben? Do you think his sister would know?” Ela continued. “I had a question I had to ask him about his class but I wasn’t sure if he was even here tonight.” Ela told him. She waved it off. “If not, it’s okay. I can send him an email when I get home.”

Noah had been wandering the fair, his eyes searching the faces for his ward. Esme had promised to wait for him at Acadia, but of course she had taken off on her own, leaving Noah frustrated and concerned. This seemed to be the usual routine for them, and Noah wasn’t happy about it. He turned when he heard a voice, hoping it was Esme in the distance, but it was another Moroi girl he vaguely recognized.
“Hey - yeah, I guard Esme,” he said, a slight frown on his face. ‘At least, I’m supposed to be guarding her, if she’d ever let me,’ he thought. “She probably would know, but I can’t find her. She was supposed to wait for me at Acadia but... never mind, I was looking for her too.” He looked over at Ela with a weak smile on his face. “We could look for her together,” he said with a short chuckle. “Maybe along the way we’ll find her brother too. You’re Ela, right? Sorry, I don’t think we’ve formally met yet.”

“Who wants to be the next to try the ultimate strength test? The high striker!” The attendant belted out, trying to beckon people over to the game he was in charge of. “You there!” He called, pointing toward the two dhampir. “Come on over!” He was adamant and really persistent, waving over in glee. Jordan had been hanging out with his roommate Noah, his hands dug into his pockets as they began to pass by. However, he stopped as they were directly spoken to, and he gulped as he reluctantly glanced over. He wished he had kept walking. He wished he didn’t make eye contact with the man staring at them.
“Oh, I mean, we-” Jordan began, stumbling over his words as he attempted to get out of it. He pursed his lips together, rocking a little where he stood as he glanced toward Noah.
~
The fair was overwhelming, but something about the bustling noise and frenetic energy made Noah feel a bit giddy, like a child again. He and Jordan had been perusing the stalls, and Noah had shaken his head sternly whenever Jordan seemed to be tempted by the fried food options. But his ears perked up at the idea of the strength test. The attendant was adamant, and Noah glanced over at Jordan with a half-hidden grin.
“Come on, I’m sure you can beat this!” Noah exclaimed, nudging his roommate over to the stand. “You’re a dhampir, for goodness sakes, you have strength these Lennox people can’t imagine. Plus - I think our morning sessions have been helping you!” He took the mallet from the attendant and pushed it into Jordan’s hands. “Just picture the button is a Strigoi head and bash it in,” Noah said passionately, and took a step back out of swinging distance... just in case.

@cataclysmiiiics - Esme
continuation of this thread
Noah was frustrated as he glanced around the woods, each tree seeming to blend together in a sort of surrealist maze with no escape. “You didn’t even give me a chance to be in charge,” he grumbled, looking back at Esme with raised eyebrows. “You just said - ‘Hey, let’s go on an adventure!’ - and I had to immediately drop everything and follow you into the forest.” He sighed and gave her an affectionate smile. “Didn’t even think to bring a map, huh?”
Noah sat down on a rock, motioning for her to sit next to him. “I’m pretty sure it’s that way,” he said, pointing towards a makeshift trail in front of them. “Acadia is south of the forest, so we just need to wait for the sun to shift a bit to make sure that’s actually south, and then we should be good to go. In the meantime,” he jumbled around in his bag and pulled out some water, passing it to her. “Might as well stay hydrated.”

“I want to know what makes you angry.”
"The damn school not caring that we're all sitting here like sheep, waiting to be attacked by the Strigoi or other enemies. Can't they figure out how to put the spells back up already?"

Narrowing her eyes “You dare say that to me?” her voice firm, but she also knew he was kind of joking. Whether Leo was older or younger, that didn’t give her a good reason for his Moroi to run him around like an errand boy. “Once or twice.” she nodded her head. “Just as long as you’re happy…” she stated , knowing she couldn’t really just say what she wanted to say. Sometimes Luna had to bite her tongue.
“Oh, aren’t you just the confident one.” she stated matching his gaze. She really had thought she was improving. Even if little by little it was strength or another day, combat. If she could surprise her long time friend here, then she was doing something right. Luna was one to go all in, regardless if she ended up looking ridiculous. “Don’t cry.” she stated with a smile “If I hit you too hard.” she stated, preparing her stance. “How long are we doing this? until I can land a hit?”
The pair moved across the floor, each managing small jabs but nothing definite, nothing that would knock the other down. Noah was sweating and breathing heavily - and damn, he was impressed by how far Luna had come. She was focused, deliberate, and surprising. Noah dropped to his knees when the timer went off, signaling the sparring match was complete.
“Whew, where’d all that come from?” he asked her, breathing heavily but a smile plastered across his face. “You’ve been training secretly or something? Or have you just been holding back all these years?”

Jordan loved easily. That should pretty much be carved on his tombstone one day. Noah was right and yeah, it was bound to happen. Everyone else seemed to catch on that something was going on between them, even before he or Giselle confessed anything at all. “Oh, aha,” Jordan laughed quietly, running a hand through his hair. “Well, she’s the one who like… brought it up first. I’m not sure if I would’ve.” He wasn’t calling himself a coward but… yeah. “Yeah, watch-from-afar… you’re not exactly wrong.” He gave his roommate a smile. “But… yeah, um… it’s new but it’s good, and I’m really happy.”
Noah felt a twinge of something - was it jealousy? He couldn’t imagine feeling jealous of Jordan, of all people (nothing against his roommate, but Noah reserved his feelings of jealousy for those who exhibited fighting skills worthy of dhampir admiration). Yet here he was, looking at Jordan’s silly smile as he spoke about his Moroi, and Noah felt a hint of longing wash over him.
“Well, I am happy for you,” he said firmly, patting his roommate on the back in what he hoped was a friendly motion. “And this will hopefully help kick your butt into gear for training - you have many more reasons to protect Giselle now, and I am here to help make you the most capable protector these halls have seen.” He glowed with excitement. “We could do extra sparring sessions after classes, if you’d like! And now that you see morning runs aren’t so bad, you can start joining me!”

Noah’s enthusiasm for training had not diminished as the school dealt with the loss of protection - it had grown tenfold, into an obsession. This is why he found himself outside of Professor Garrick’s office, knocking on the door after classes had ended. When the door opened, Noah took a step back apologetically. “Sorry to bother you Professor, but I was wondering if you could give me some individual combat lessons?” He quickly continued before the Professor could respond. “I’m not struggling or anything - I’m probably one of your better students, really - but I think I need to reach the next level.” He stood up straighter. “I want to be able to help defend the school when the time comes.”

“Ugh, French.” she stated not quite well verse as she was in Italian. “I’ll do my best.” she stated with a small smile. “I honestly only know how to say, one, two, and three. The second is my name is. “ she chuckled. “Who knows why anything is the way it is, maybe once upon a time ago in the creation of languages the gods simply said, let’s make this difficult. And poof, language complications.”
Luna scrunched up her nose “I don’t like to make trouble, nor do I want to make trouble for Leo.” she wasn’t sure if she liked that Noah simply chased. That wasn’t meant for guardians to do. Smiling when Leo was mentioned “Yes, that he is. Very focused, and polite.” she nodded her head before the smile left. “I hope so.” she gave a light shrug before placing her phone down on the bench. “Alright, lets go.”
Noah scoffed, rolling his eyes with a laugh. “Well, I guess I’ll need to find another French tutor, you’re no help.” He listened as she described her relationship with Leo, the differences between his guardianship and hers highlighted. “To be fair, Leo is older than Asphe,” he said quickly, defending his Moroi. “She can be polite... occasionally. I’ve seen it happen once or twice.” Noah hid his smile behind his hand, unable to admit his ward could be difficult.
He stood up when she did, eager to be moving again. Sparring with Luna was always interesting. He always imagined he knew which way she would turn, which foot she’d kick with, when she would fake a fall to lure him into getting closer. But after spending time at Acadia, she had been learning new tricks, growing more confident in fighting. And so had he - so their recent sparring matches had become very interesting. “Don’t worry about hurting me,” he smirked, stretching out his limbs. “If you can get close enough, that is.”

[ attention ] -alistair
for your muse to touch mine as a way of getting their attention
Noah had been in the library for the past hour, trying to focus on his class work. He was much better in the training rooms, but damn it, he was going to be the best dhampir there was and if essays were what it took, he'd do them. Noah was deep in his work when he felt a slight tap on his shoulder. He jumped with a start, turning to find Alistair looking at him with a smirk. "No way," Noah said instantly, leaning away from his friend. "I don't know what you want me to do, but I won't. I'm trying to learn."

🍎 luna and Noah
TALK ABOUT SOMEONE THEY LOVE/CARE ABOUT/IN LOVE WITH.
“Love is a luxury I haven’t enjoyed since my parents were killed. Now my energy is spent making sure our kind isn’t eradicated by evil beings, you know?
But I’m not heartless. I like spending time with my dhampir friends. Jordan is... well, he’s getting there, which is good news. And I like watching Luna evolve. I can’t believe we’ve known each other this long, but she’s different here at Acadia than she was in Seoul. It’s good to see.”

TALK ABOUT SOMETHING THAT KEEPS THEM GOING AND LIVING.
"Protecting the Moroi. I wish... I wish I had been able to help protect my parents against the Strigoi, but I was too young then. I'm older now, and you can be damn sure I am going to protect them now. The strength of our species and magical species alike depend on it."

“Yeah, sorry, maybe that came out wrong,” Jordan said quickly, waving his hand loosely as he tried to correct himself. Noah indirectly threatened to make him run more and Jordan’s eyes widened slightly. Like, no thank you. He could do without that. “We’re together!” He finally released in tone that was higher-pitched than he would’ve liked for it to have been. Jordan wanted to slap himself for that one, blushing. “I– yes. Those are the beans, the spilled… we’re dating. We’re together. It happened. I– yeah.” He laughed nervously, wondering if Noah was going to ridicule him for it.
~
Noah should’ve been more surprised, really. Moroi and their guardians weren’t supposed to date, it was meant to be strictly a guardian/guarded situation. But he understood - his mother had been Moroi, and his father had fallen in love with her, his ward. The unbreakable connection between them could not be contained to just a ‘business’ relationship. Jordan loved easily, Noah could see the way he entertained his friends wholeheartedly, the way he was fascinated by the tiniest creature.
“So... you’re together,” he repeated, eyebrows raised with humor etched across his face. “Makes sense, though I hadn’t expected you to actually make a move. You kind of seemed to be the watch-from-afar type. No offense,” Noah said quickly. He knew he came across as stern, but his parents had broken the rules and here he was - it wasn’t a bad thing to fall in love with a Moroi, he thought.

Hardest? it wasn’t like she didn’t put any effort, after all, she excelled in enhanced endurance, so she could very well hold out as long as she could. “Alright, but I beat you, next time we snacking instead of practicing.” she eyed him for a moment before nodding her head. Feeling his arm around her shoulder, she had to remind herself, food is the end goal here. “Noodles.” she then smiled “Chicken sounds good too.” she nudged his side. “Healthy, what is that?” she pouted, she didn’t eat healthy. She loved her food, didn’t care about the calories. “It’s hit or miss.” she stated quietly “I’m trying my best to do my assignments and train.” not that she couldn’t multitask, she just need motivation to do so. “Advanced compulsion is interesting and languages is getting better.” looking over at him “How is school for you? everything going okay with your guardianship?”
Noah groaned, the language classes the bane of his existence. He already spoke two languages, why should he have to learn anymore? “I may need your help in French,” he admitted. “My brain just jumbles the genders up - how come a bike is masculine but a car is feminine? It just makes no sense.”
They came to the training room, and Noah sighed, glancing around at the equipment. “Asphe can be difficult, she seems to love getting into trouble.” He frowned. “I think she does it on purpose, to annoy me,” he chuckled darkly, shaking his head in frustration. “How are you doing? Guarding a royal is not easy, but Leo seems to be very level-headed.” He paused again, then looked a Luna. “Your parents must be proud.”
